He helps her clean up while she notices his scars. He later says he can't see the future without her. Just then, three men barge in and are killed by Shinpei.

A guy offers her rice in exchange for a dance. A lady knocks the bowl away, but Satoko still eats from the floor. She dances with a fan, musicians join her, and the crowd cheers. Shinpei intervenes and takes her out.

He shows her fireflies for the first time and explains that the island is lawless because the guards watch every boat. For a woman to leave, she must be sold as a courtesan. Satoko wants to see the courtesan house. The scene moves to her home, where Kotaro is beaten for misplacing her. Her father shows up, and Kotaro requests to be freed so that he can retrieve her.
