It says a lot that Nube acknowledged he wasn't sure he could stop it. Things swiftly got out of control as the students rushed towards danger. Nube's defenses were defenses breached by the Kirin, who even damaged his Demon Hand. Nube appeared totally outmatched for once.
Chibi, the puppy Katsuya had aided earlier in the episode, provided the emotional twist. Chibi's loyalty demonstrated that Katsuya was not wholly self-centered when the Kirin were about to render judgment. He was saved by that modest act of saving a creature in need. The Kirin spared his life after rendering a fair judgment.
