Yomi no Tsugai: Daemons of the Shadow Realm is the most recent long-running manga series by Hiromu Arakawa, the remarkable author of Fullmetal Alchemist and Silver Spoon. The series is based on folklore-inspired fantasy mixed with strictly organized mystery and character drama, serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan since December 2021. Following the death of their father, the two are sucked into battles with Daemons referred to as Tsugai, contractually bound entities with symbolic duality. This assumption makes it squarely in the traditions of the dark fantasy, but not subject to the stereotypical elements of this genre.

The exterior happiness of Asa is in stark contrast to her inner sorrow, and the stoicism of Yuru hides her great insecurity within morality. Those are the dynamics that propel the emotional heart of Yomi no Tsugai: Daemons of the Shadow Realm.

Structurally, the manga does not exhibit any of the signs of entering a final stage. Significant plot lines, such as what exactly Tsugai's evolution is and what it means to the nation at large within the context of the Shadow Realm, are left undecided. The past works of Arakawa imply a protracted serialization in case thematic complexity is ever growing. On these grounds, Yomi no Tsugai: Daemons of the Shadow Realm seems to be predestined to additional issues.

As far as adaptations are concerned, there is, as of now, no officially confirmed anime adaptation of Yomi no Tsugai: Daemons of the Shadow Realm. Although the series has gained popular interest, Square Enix has given no official production statements. This puts the manga in such a low-profile position that Fullmetal Alchemist had been in before its adaptation. Anything out of the manga is not proven to be true.
