Fans who have been reading the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo manga have on a ride as this spin-off series by Gege Akutami has blown their mind away with a short but intricate narrative. The story is heading towards its climax, and whatever the creator built is paying off, but it seems like the fandom is highly displeased after reading the ending of chapter 23. In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, characters are known to be killed off brutally, fights end with no mercy, and victory always comes with a devastating cost.

Although in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 23, the reputation that the original series had has been shattered because, instead of following a narrative that would leave readers feeling despair, we are given hope. This kind of story is not something Gege Akutami is famously known for. The core of this chapter revolves around Itadori Yuji and Maru as they discuss a way to solve the problem of cursed energy for once and for all.

Instead of showing a situation that escalates into another battle, the chapter becomes an information dumping ground. It leaned heavily into showing us a conversation revolving around heavy philosophical discussion about karma, souls, and coexistence. Yuji explained that eliminating cursed energy from Japan does not mean that there will not be any cursed spirits anymore.

They end up finalizing by concluding that Maru would be making changes to everyone's soul. This kind of solution is harmonious and gives a vibe that the story might end where everyone gets what they want. Maru's “Harmony” ritual feels closer to magical world restoration than the grim sorcery we’re used to. In Jujutsu Kaisen, if you told fans during the Shibuya Incident arc that the series would end with a soul-color harmonization ritual, they would’ve laughed.

The Dabura and Mahoraga disappointment

The backlash is not just about tone, as it is more about the execution. The fight between Dabura and Mahoraga in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo had made fans sit on the edges of their seats as it had reached an intense moment. But instead of delivering a high-stakes conclusion they fight came to an abrupt ending. No one could have anticipated this because the fandom was sure that it would end with either of the fighters dying.

What we got was an interruption in this fight, which made Dabura realise he had nothing more to offer, and he asked Maru to send him back home. After giving him a really meaningful character arc, this sudden departure felt lackluster. Fans have labeled it rushed.

Additionally, Maru's sudden power spike in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo happens in just a few pages. After years of structured power systems and carefully layered domain expansions, this rapid escalation feels convenient. It’s the kind of ending fans would expect from a shonen friendship arc, not from the creator who gave us Nanami’s death.

Is Gege Akutami intentionally shifting tone in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo?

While there are a handful of chapters left before Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo comes to an end, fans are still on the edge about Chapter 23. It could be Gege Akutami's way of making his readers get comfortable for a second before he ends up delivering a conclusion that would shake the fandom to the core.

It is undeniable that the readers are going to feel robbed about not getting a proper ending to Dabura versus Mahoraga; the series has an opportunity to leave a mark by giving an explosive conclusion. For now, we will have to wait patiently to see what the creator has planned and hope that the spin-off series, which started with a bang, also ends on a high note.
