Kagurabachi Chapter 117 is here, and it has continued to build on the momentum from the previous installment. We finally have a payoff, and the creator has given an explosive setup in this series since the second part began. The chapter began with a lore drop and then eventually spread out to action, and we now might be entering a full-scale war.

If a war is indeed about to happen, then it just might be the most intense battle in the manga. Kagurabachi Chapter 117 starts with Cihaki making a prophecy that has an ominous vibe. She ends up predicting that during the meeting with Shokuku, they will be bearing fans. Now, there is a minor issue with this vision, as she cannot actually pinpoint the number of casualties that this event would cause.

Unfortunately, her having this capability is actually a double-edged sword. While it actually manages to warn everyone of the near danger, it could also end up causing overreaction or miscalculation. Especially as her prediction causes uncertainty, we do not really know how deadly an event is going to be in the first place. Naturally, it could cause tension, now that we also know that Japan must end up going ahead with negotiations despite getting this warning.

Another interesting highlight on Kagurabachi Chapter 117 is the brief glimpse we get of the mysterious old Shokuku man in the prophecy. Although his appearance does not add to the main core of this chapter, his presence itself is a major hint that the upcoming installments will be uncovering the depths of his powers.

We also have a lore reveal about the Mikaboshi clan. Apparently, there was a survivor of the Shokoku attack who explained that this particular ancient clan was once defeated and sentenced to be exiled over a thousand years ago by none other than Soga Jishin. Introduction of the Mikaboshi clan in Kagurabachi Chapter 117 is interesting because of their insect-based sorcery. They are able to wield and control insects in a battle.

This detail is actually ironic because they were defeated by a clan that wielded an enchanted blade with similar traits. Additionally, Kagurabachi Chapter 117 also introduced a compelling theory: Maybe the Mikaboshi did not actually disappear and survived underwater. Due to tectonic shifts, their civilization has resurfaced, bringing them back into conflict with Japan.

Despite getting a proper warning through the prophecy, Japan goes ahead with the negotiation. They still had hope of maintaining peace. However, Kagurabachi Chapter 117 makes it clear that the negotiation was doomed from the start. We see that the Shokoku representatives arrive with impossible demands:

  • Full control over Datenseki
  • Return of all previously acquired resources
  • Ownership of major regions like Tokyo, Kanagawa, and Chiba

These demands are essentially a declaration of dominance rather than negotiation. Then, before Japan could even respond, the people of Shokuku launched their attack.

They destroy the Japanese battleship and slaughter nearly every delegate present. Only one survivor is left alive to carry back their declaration of war. While this is a shocking moment, it is established that peace was never an option.

Final thoughts

Kagurabachi Chapter 117 shows readers that the creator has his focus on building the story to have an incredibly satisfying payoff. Ever since part 2 began, all the chapters seem to have hooked the readers to tune in every week to see where the story is heading. If the same momentum continues, then this franchise will stand out in the manga community and will attract more readers to give this story a chance.
