MAO Episode 1 introduces a series of dark supernatural adventures based on the manga created by Rumiko Takahashi. It is published since 2019 in Weekly Shōnen Sunday and represents historical and psychological mysteries. Thus, Episode 1 presents an entirely new direction of writing from the author, who used to be known for romantic comedies and light-hearted stories.

The MAO Episode 1 introduces two different timelines: modern Reiwa-era Japan and the old times of Taisho era. Thus, the main idea of the story lies in exploring the supernatural themes of curses, identity crisis, and the problems of time displacement.

Moreover, MAO Episode 1 presents the curse awakening of Nanoka Kamon right after the time-slip to the Taisho era and meeting Mao. It is evident that she has a similar supernatural ability like Mao due to being cursed. It also shows that Nanoka participates actively in the process and is one of the key figures involved in it.

The process of time slipping for Nanoka begins when she enters the gate that leads her to a Taisho-era world inhabited by malicious supernatural creatures. This quick shift of location and background immediately highlights the story of the episode. Moreover, it reveals the very premise of the story, based on time slipping.

The conflict presented in Episode 1 emerges when Nanoka comes across an ayakashi monster that tries to attack her soon after she arrives in the new world. This scene shows the fragility of Nanoka and the danger that she has to face in this world. Her attack is quickly stopped by Mao who kills the monster with a sword.

An essential point in Episode 1 where Mao discovers the truth about Nanoka is when he finds out that she is an ayakashi. It is essential since it means that her body is already changed. It also means that Nanoka shares the cursed nature of Mao's body. This detail becomes the base for their relationship.

The information about Mao's curse revealed in MAO Episode 1 tells that it began during the massacre of the Kou Clan shrine. Then a cat yōkai ate an important artifact causing a lot of destruction. Mao destroyed it but gained its soul, ceasing the aging process and becoming cursed. In such a way, this background information explains why he does what he does.

MAO Episode 1 Curse Mechanics, Character Dynamics, and Narrative Setup

In MAO Episode 1, byōki poison is a term that is explored related to the curse system. It plays a crucial role in the story as the supernatural factor threatening the characters. Byōki poison affects humans and spirits in different ways. As for Nanoka, she is affected by this poison system as well.

Another important aspect in MAO Episode 1 is the introduction of the Haku seed – a special ability that lies inside Nanoka and makes her connected with the past events and clans related to the origins of the curse. Thus, Nanoka is not only concerned about her own survival but also plays an important part in solving (or worsening) the conflict.

Finally, the alliance between Nanoka and Mao presented in the first episode is not built on friendship but rather created out of necessity as both characters understand that due to the fact that they have the same curse, they should unite in order to survive. In addition, the complementary experiences that they both possess help them operate as a united group.

In conclusion, MAO Episode 1 successfully presents an intricate plot revolving around curses, time travel, and connections between different people's destinies. With the help of the plot developed around the character of Nanoka, it is possible to create a basis for further episodes that will be more detailed and structured.
