The trailer confirms that the movie, subtitled The Serpent God, will open in Japanese theaters on May 29, 2026. Alongside the release date, the new footage also reveals a fresh wave of cast additions, a new theme song from Aina The End, and a story rooted in a 150-year-old secret hidden deep within the Ooku — the inner sanctum of Edo Castle.

The new Mononoke Movie 3 trailer doesn't hold back. The trailer sends the audience into the chaos of the Ooku–the inner women's quarters of Edo Castle.

The footage of the trailer implies that the tragic events beneath the palace's floorboard, the unfulfilled promise linked to the deity "O-mizu-sama," and the flood of hatred around the women within the palace will destroy them all.

The artwork maintains the style of the franchise, which is heavily influenced by Ukiyo-e, and the animation is beautiful. The Medicine Seller can also be seen preparing to draw his sword of demon slaying, ready to deal with a tremendous amount of grief and rage.

Mononoke Movie 3 begins right where chapter two left off. After all of the chaos that happened during the battle with the Fire Rat and the Karakasa umbrella spirit, the inner palace was seemingly peaceful again, but the Medicine Seller (again voiced by Amazing Hero Koji) knew something was still terribly wrong.

The main character, Empress Sachiko (the emperor's wife), dies shortly after giving birth to her long-awaited son, which leads to a terrible domino effect of events as her unfulfilled wishes and her unexpressed sorrow turn into something much worse.

Some weird earthquakes are happening inside the palace. Enormous, triangle-shaped scales seem to just appear out of thin air. A maid is discovered dead in incredibly morbid circumstances. The Medicine Seller seeks answers by investigating, which leads him to an enormous, snake-like Mononoke–a.k.a. The Serpent God.

To beat this thing, he needs to determine three vital truths: what the Serpent God looks like; what the Serpent God truly is; and why the Serpent God exists. Turns out that these truths could go back over 150 years, and they're buried deep within the history of the Ooku. An enormous secret within.

What to Expect

Mononoke Movie 3 is going to be the toughest chapter so far for the entire cast and the Medicine Seller at his limits – but it sounds like it will also be the best chapter ever, delivering all the goods that readers have wanted. This time, the Serpent God is going to pose a huge threat to the Medicine Seller and will reveal one of the biggest tragedies ever.
