Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 9 has landed, and it might be one of the hardest-hitting episodes of the whole season. As Subaru continues on the Loss Arc, this episode ramps up all of the emotion built up through the first 8 episodes of this season. Those following the arc of the Pleiades Watchtower will find this episode both thrilling and disturbing.

In Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 9, Subaru dies numerous times during one loop, loses his sense of reality, sees everyone he knows die, and wakes up with a shocking message written on his own hand that someone or something is inside him.

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 9 starts with Subaru escaping the tower, but he’s only outside for a matter of seconds when a giant sand creature attacks him. He is rescued from death and killed by the same creature again, only this time he falls through the sand and into a dark chamber that is filled with bones of the previous creatures that were destroyed by the sand beast.

After wandering around in the chambers, he finds a wall that can’t be pushed through, and when he tries to break it down, he ends up right back where he started, at the front of the tower.

Subaru reaches his breaking point in Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 9. He climbs the stairs of the tower and adds all the people around him as potential suspects for killing him. Therefore, he is hoping that some are already dead.

He finds all the dead people in the tower — Ram, Julius, Meili, etc. They will cause him to vomit from the sight of them. The only two people missing are Beatrice and Emilia, which leads him into the depths of one of the longest vomits in anime history.

The episode has a powerful scene with Patrasche, Subaru's ground dragon. When Subaru is unstable, he tries to hurt Patrasche using a broken sword, but she doesn't fight back. When the tower has a dark entity chasing them, she protects Subaru by absorbing multiple hits that the creature gives her.

Right before the loop resets, Subaru shouts that he doesn't want to die, and Patrasche saves him from falling, but at the cost of her falling to the ground. This moment drives home the point of how much Subaru has lost in each of his loops.

Natsuki Subaru's Chilling Twist

Subaru resets and finds himself next to Emilia and Beatrice; this time he keeps quiet about his memory loss, thinking talking about it could result in him dying. He speaks with Julius and Shaula, carefully asking questions to find hints without giving himself away. Everything seems almost under control — that is, until Meili whispers something in his ear and black-outs the screen to switch scenes.

When the screen lights up again, Subaru finds Meili dead next to him with marks on her neck, and his own hand has "Natsuki Subaru Was Here" written on it. The impact is alarming; Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 4 Episode 9 poses the scary possibility that Subaru's body could be utilized by someone else — to kill others. At the same time, he is not aware they are being murdered.
