Recently, we got an early screener for The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 because of Crunchyroll, and this installment had the same blend of storytelling that fans loved in the first place about the anime. One thing that the premiere of this season did very well was that it had a combination of mystery and character-driven storytelling.

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 has set a foundation that gives viewers an idea of what the main focus of the story is going to be. Basically, this new season will not have any explosive revelations; rather, the spotlight will be on setting the stage for what comes next.

This premiere has also introduced us to a new mysterious woman, and without giving out any major details about the sequence, this scene with her creates an unsettling atmosphere. Looking at this kind of opening to a new season is an interesting approach because it does not start explaining everything that has been happening.

It allows the mystery to brew a little longer, which ensures that the fans stay engaged. One of the biggest highlights of The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 is how it gives focus back to Maomao. With her no longer working at the Rear Palace, her life definitely has become quieter. Back in the pleasure district, she has a routine and has taken over responsibility for handling the apothecary.

But those who have been following this series from the start know that Maomao is not someone who would actually have a peaceful routine. She has sharp observational skills, and this ability of hers actually becomes the driving force of this episode. Initially, in The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1, there was a development revolving around insects and the local food supply chain.

But she was smart enough to start connecting the dots between these details, which others might actually overlook. Soon, she would do something that would suit her personality as Maomao started investigating. Although there was no dramatic exposition, it was entertaining to see her curiosity and knowledge ultimately lead to the reveal that there is a larger problem brewing.

A potentially dangerous crisis takes shape

The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 also did give us a political side of Jinshi. There was a warning given to him about a potential outbreak that might threaten even the empire. Interestingly, this episode has done a great job of explaining why such events end up having devastating consequences.

There is quite a bit of political and historical information introduced here, particularly surrounding clans and their relationship with the Imperial court. Some viewers may find this exposition-heavy, especially when compared with the more character-focused moments involving Maomao.

However, the information clearly has a purpose. Overall, The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 is establishing the political environment that will likely become increasingly important as the season progresses.

While the premiere episode maintained the usual animation style and set the foundation for a new arc, there might be a minor criticism. It is that the amount of setup occasionally slows the momentum. There are several political details and pieces of historical context introduced before the larger mystery has had time to fully develop.

Overall, The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 Episode 1 is a strong and intriguing return for Maomao. The premiere may not provide the biggest payoff immediately, but it successfully creates the feeling that something much larger is approaching, and that is more than enough to make the next episode worth watching.
