Now that The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 is finally here, the story feels like there is some actual development. It was an undeniably entertaining and equally wholesome installment of this season so far. After the story kept on focusing on some emotionally charged moments, this week's episode actually took a step back and focused more on characters just enjoying themselves, which pushed several relationships forward for the better.
One thing that The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 stayed true to is how the narrative sticks with slow-burning romance. It started with the group visiting a theme park, which offered a perfect setting for everything to have a chance for character growth. Youta, Miki, Koyuki, and Minato spent the entire day together and created some lasting memories.

All the time they were having fun in the amusement park created a lighthearted atmosphere, which gave space for these characters to show their real personalities. From Youta constantly panicking as Miki had her carefree nature to Koyuki being open with Minato while he was awkward around her presence.
Everything about this outing felt like a reward to viewers, especially now that we have been following these characters through their personal struggles over the past several episodes. Although if we were to highlight a character who internally suffered through feeling flustered was Youta.
Miki was constantly comfortable being physically close with Youta; she often shared close proximity with him without a second thought. Unfortunately for Youta, who is a teenager himself and is in love with her, he was not able to manage his internal imagination and often froze.
One of the funniest moments in The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 comes when Miki hugs Youta from behind and asks him to take her away. While her intention did not have any intent of romance, Youta ended up almost dying from embarrassment. Soon, he ended up walking into a wall. Despite him actually being painfully obvious about Miki, she is still unaware of his feelings.
Koyuki and Minato deliver the episode's best moment

The standout storyline of The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 belonged to Koyuki and Minato. During this amusement park trip, even Minato was nervous being around Koyuki and still tried to be his true self. One particular scene that showed us that she is aware of his presence is when she picked up that during the visit to the haunted house, Minato was scared.
When she spoke to him about it, she expected him to brush it off, but he stayed true to himself. For the first time, she actually thought that Minato was cute. This is a different reaction she had in comparison to how she looks at Youta, who is like a father figure. While this does not mean that she is also interested romantically in Minato, this definitely is a step forward.
The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 also showed us how Minato is jealous of Koyuki being comfortable around other guys. At one point, he even wished that she would only like him. It is a realistic portrayal of first love, but it also hints at potential trouble ahead.
New characters set up the next arc in The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10

Another development that takes place in The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 is the introduction of Yuki, who is the younger sibling of Miki. His arrival adds new energy to the story, especially knowing how he is already so close to Koyuki. While Minato is jealous of him, there is a chance that Yuki might end up playing a different role in the story.
Given how oblivious Miki can be, Yuki could end up becoming an unexpected wingman. Whether intentionally or accidentally, he may help push the story forward in ways Youta could never manage on his own. Additionally, Atagawa Akine, a character connected to Koyuki's middle school past, made her first appearance and immediately created a sense of tension.
The timing feels significant because Koyuki has only recently started becoming happier and more comfortable around her friends. Bringing someone from her past into the story could force her to confront unresolved feelings she has been avoiding.
Final thoughts
The anime continued to prove that its slow-burn romance works because every small piece of progress feels earned. With new characters entering the story and old conflicts threatening to return, The Ramparts of Ice Episode 10 successfully balanced wholesome fun with an intriguing setup for the episodes ahead.
