There are repercussions to that discovery. Coco goes back to her magic book and begins her own experiments, which quickly go horribly wrong. She traces a forbidden spell and accidentally freezes her house and mother. Qifrey arrives barely in time to save her. He takes her on as an apprentice rather than erasing her memories as required by the laws. From that moment on, Coco's objectives are crystal clear: become a witch, find the book that started all of this, and figure out how to save her mother.

Though it doesn't become comfy, episode 2 slows things down just enough to breathe. Coco meets the three trainees who are already residing at Qifrey's atelier when she moves in. Tetia is friendly and hospitable. Richeh is reserved but not hostile. Agott, on the other hand, is neither of those things. Agott worked hard for her spot and isn't interested in pretending that Coco deserves hers. That tension is one of the more interesting dynamics in the show so far. Additionally, it has a significant connection to Witch Hat Atelier episode 3 because Agott directly challenged Coco at the conclusion of episode 2, and the show won't just drop that kind of stuff.

The history of magic and the reasons behind its secrecy are also covered in episode 2. There were conflicts. Cities were destroyed. A group of witches eventually stepped in, took people's memories of magic, and built a system designed to keep that kind of destruction from happening again. It sounds admirable. However, the cracks are already visible. It is forbidden to use healing magic. Age manipulation is prohibited. However, erasing memories is entirely acceptable. It is difficult to overlook the exception, and it is obviously deliberate. Might even make for a plot point down the line.

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 3: What to Expect

Heading into Witch Hat Atelier episode 3, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. The most pressing thread is Agott's challenge. She essentially dared Coco to prove she belongs, and that rivalry is just getting started. That conflict will probably be intensified in Witch Hat Atelier episode 3. Agott is not a character who lets things go, and Coco is not one who gives up. It should be entertaining to see that battle unfold.

Coco still has a long way to go after that. Her ultimate objective is to arrive at the Tower of Tomes, where all known spells (including those found in picture books) are recorded. However, she is still unable to go there. Only a witch who has successfully completed their trials is permitted to enter the tower, which is guarded by four librarians. Coco must therefore study during this time. More of her training will likely be seen in Witch Hat Atelier episode 3, which could be very fascinating to watch given how episode 2 handled the magic system.

And there's Qifrey. He is seen using what appears to be a phone at the end of episode 2, which is certainly intended to stick out and feels totally out of place in this environment. He reports to someone, and the person who gave the go-ahead for Coco to be his apprentice is a member of a wider, covert witch hierarchy. That thread is sitting there and hasn't been pulled yet. Even if Witch Hat Atelier episode 3 doesn't specifically address it, it's the kind of element that the show obviously plans to explore.

The riddle of the picture book is still unsolved. Young Coco was given that book by someone who knew exactly what they were doing. It wasn't a coincidence. Someone is still out there, somewhere, after giving a child a book with forbidden magic and leaving.
