Will Steffy on The Bold and the Beautiful be able to hand over the baby she's carrying to Daphne Rose and Carter after bringing the child to term? Soap Central sat down with the players in this complicated baby drama – Murielle Hilaire (Daphne Rose), Tanner Novlan (Finn), Lawrence Saint-Victor (Carter), and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) – to dissect this complex tale in which there is no clear villain!

It Happened One Night

Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and Carter (Lawrence Saint-Victor) truly believed that their respective marriages to Finn and Daphne Rose were over. Otherwise, they never would have turned to each other for a night of comfort and safety. “Steffy was needing to be seen,” Saint-Victor tells Soap Central of the night that the Forrester CEO returned to Los Angeles after discovering that Novlan’s Finn knew about Sheila (Kimberlin Brown) following him to Monaco (the duo’s special place!) — and he didn’t tell her.

"Steffy has been beating the drum for many years about Sheila and not feeling safe, and ultimately, that's what she wanted — to feel safe with [Finn] and to know that he 'got' it," Wood says. "Sheila has been a weak spot for [Finn]. Steffy seeing Sheila [in Monaco] was an emotional rollercoaster."

Upon her return to L.A. and Forrester Creations, Steffy sensed Carter was in pain, too, and he revealed that his marriage was also over as Daphne returned to Paris, unable to deal with the fact that she couldn’t give him the child that they desperately wanted. “It was a perfect storm of the right people at the wrong time under the wrong circumstances,” Saint-Victor adds.

“Well, when you say it like that, yeah, I understand,” wryly offers Hilaire, who adds with a smile, “[But] nobody was divorced!”

Novlan agrees that the scenes directly leading up to Steffy and Carter having sex were very intense. If the characters didn’t believe their unions were kaput, they were less likely to sell the fact that they turned to each other for comfort. “You guys [Wood and Saint-Victor] did a lot of the heavy lifting,” Novlan praises. “Sometimes, we have stories that go very fast, and sometimes, they’re drawn out. You guys both made it [work].”

The Doctor Is Finn

Novlan rose to the challenge the show recently gave him when Finn responded to the fact that Steffy went ahead with the procedure to donate her egg and to sign up as a surrogate, while he was out of town at a medical conference.

Sure, Finn’s going to spend the rest of his life making it up to Steffy that he didn’t tell her about Sheila following him to Monaco, but he still was rightfully miffed (to say the least) to find out that his wife had made such a colossal decision without running it by him.

“That was nice of the writers to give Finn that opportunity,” Novlan says. There’s a reason Finn had such a strong reaction. Deep down, something’s amiss. “He needs to figure out what’s really causing [Steffy’s unease] because there have been a lot of different excuses that are slowly not adding up.”

Technically, Hilaire is correct when she says that neither couple was divorced when Carter and Steffy made love. However, in Steffy’s mind, she no longer felt that Finn could provide her with a safe space. “In [that] moment, she did not feel safe,” Wood points out. “All she wanted was for [someone] to say, ‘I’ve got this. You’ve got nothing to worry about.’”

Carter may not like the idea of him and Steffy lying to their spouses, but he sees it as the solution that’s the lesser of two evils. Why is Steffy going along with his plan? “She’s heard Carter say, ‘I’ve got this. I see you, and we’re going to figure this out,'" Wood says. “There was something in her that just went into her feminine energy and was like, ‘All right. I’m going to trust you. I’m going to let you figure this out.'”

Does Hilaire think that Daphne will fall in love with the baby Steffy is carrying the minute the baby is put in her arms? “She already has,” suggests Hilaire.

Steffy’s Choice

How might Steffy respond on the day she has to hand a baby she’s carried over to another woman? Steffy did the right thing when she learned that Phoebe, the baby she adopted, was, in reality, Liam (Scott Clifton) and Hope's (Annika Noelle) daughter Beth. But this time, the baby bootie is on the other foot!

Might she not, understandably, expect the same courtesy as she’s this baby’s biological mother? “There are many people who can do surrogacy, and it’s amazing that women can do that,” says Wood, who muses, “I don’t think that Steffy is as mentally prepared [to give up her baby]. This could tear her apart.”

Who is to "blame" for this situation? Daphne and Finn? Or Carter and Steffy? Who should keep the baby once he or she is born? Sound off in the comments section!
