Paulina talked to Belle about Marlena suing EJ in order to force the removal of the hospital from EJ’s hands. Brady talked to Belle about how miserable Rachel was in Bayview. Belle encouraged Brady to let the therapy work. When Belle suggested that Brady talk to Marlena, he was adamant that he could not trust her. Belle told Brady that Marlena had made the decision because Kristen had asked her. Brady made up with Marlena, and he invited her to visit Rachel. When Marlena asked if Brady would move back in, Brady said he believed it was time to find his own place.

Holly told Tate that she understood why he needed to stay in Salem for Rachel. Tate confessed to Holly about his academic probation. With their holidays to be spent apart, Tate and Holly had one last tryst before she caught her plane for Paris.

Gwen offered Gabi a large sum of money to design an original dress for Gwen for New Year’s Eve. As Gwen got Gabi tipsy on spiked eggnog, Gabi admitted that she had regretted her betrayal of Stefan. Gwen said she had not seen or heard from either DiMitri or Stefan. When Gabi mentioned that she had learned to like Leo, she confirmed to Gwen that he was marrying Javi on New Year’s Eve. Gwen confessed that she was sorry she had lashed out at Leo over Dimitri, and that she missed him.

Kristen was unconscious with fever. Peter blamed EJ. Chad admitted that he had never forgiven EJ for having slept with Abigail. Peter told EJ he hated him because he was the most like Stefano. When Kristen woke up, she accused Peter of being their captor. When Theo reached for Peter, he knocked Theo to the ground, causing a head wound. Peter pulled out a vial of sarin gas and admitted he was the kidnapper. Kristen made an appeal to Peter, and he agreed to save her. As Peter shuffled Kristen behind him, she knocked him out, and he impaled himself on a human bone when he fell. Outside the crypt, someone watched the family inside the crypt via a camera feed.

Cat learned that Peter had traveled to Aremid and rented a car. When Cat talked to the DiMera groundskeeper, she learned that he had heard sounds near the crypt. Leo overheard Rafe mention the crypt, and he told Rafe about the moan he had heard near the crypt during the ghost tour.

The DiMera siblings escaped the crypt and ran into Rafe and Jada in the house. Theo and Peter were rushed to the hospital. Kristen received treatment for her infection, but she was unable to reach Rachel at Bayview. Kristen was adamant that she wanted to go back to prison rather than have anyone know the truth about Rachel. Vivian confirmed with Rafe that Stefan was dead. Peter was on life support, but none of the DiMera siblings wanted to make a decision about end of life measures.

Brady argued with Kristen about how she had failed to tell him the truth about the shooting. Kristen vowed to keep Rachel from facing charges. Marlena visited Rachel in Bayview for Christmas, and she got her released for Christmas day. Rachel apologized to Sarah at the hospital. Rachel reunited with Kristen. Rachel begged Kristen to let her tell the truth. Kristen agreed to recant her testimony.

Xander gave Maggie a new portrait of Victor to replace the one he had destroyed. Maggie was touched by the gift. Although Maggie kept Xander at arms length, she told him that Victor loved him. Xander admitted that he missed his father. While Maggie went to the Horton party, Xander hung Victor’s portrait and spent Christmas alone.

Sarah ran into Brady in the square. Sarah told Brady that she was relieved that Xander had given her space as promised, and that he had not fought her for custody. When Sarah told Brady that he had made her life better, Brady told Sarah that their friendship was important to him too. Sarah pointed out the mistletoe above them, and Brady kissed her.

Abe sat at Theo’s bedside with Paulina. Theo’s medical condition reminded JJ of the shooting, and he continued to struggle with his guilt. Lani reminded JJ that she had shot an innocent person once, and she urged him to reach out to her if he needed to talk about it.

Cat hugged Chad in the square. Chad told Cat that he was thrilled to see her again, but he needed to prioritize his kids. With sad smiles, they said goodbye for good. EJ read the Christmas story at the hospital. Chanel got her test results back, and they confirmed that she was pregnant, not sick. When Chanel told Johnny the happy news, he was stunned.

Eli and Lani visited Julie, and they hung a few ornaments on the tree to cheer her up. After word spread that the DiMera family members had been freed, Julie held the Horton Christmas party. The Hortons hung the family ornaments on the tree. Sarah intentionally left Xander’s ornament in the box. Jennifer suggested to Chad that they go through mediation instead of a court battle. Chad told Jack and Jennifer that he would never give up his kids.
