Days of our Lives Daily Rehash, June 5: Defied death and deadly decisions

Days of our Lives is like a tale of two soaps at times. It's the soap that cheapens death to the point where you want to scream at the screen and then it's a soap that can pull at your heartstrings with real life and death situations. That was exactly what we got on the Friday, June 5, 2026, episode.

Days of our Lives ridiculousness

Isn't it lovely that Lexie (Nikki Crawford) and her family had such an enjoyable breakfast with Marlena (Deidre Hall) at the Brady Pub (where Marlena had just had dinner)? And isn't it amazing that Lexie has this wonderful new business professional wardrobe when she's been dead for 15 years?

And yes, that's where the insanity comes in. We had to listen to Marlena quietly mention that yesterday was the anniversary of John's (the late Drake Hogestyn) death, followed by Lexie asking if there was anything EJ (Daniel Feuerriegel) could do to help John since he managed to bring her back to life.

That just left such a bad taste in our mouths because a question like that cheapens death, especially since the character's death was necessitated by the real-life passing of a beloved star. It almost felt like a cruel question to ask of someone's widow, but what is death on Days of our Lives if not that?

Chanel's dilemma

From Lexie's insensitive question to Chanel's (Raven Bowens) compelling and emotional dilemma that real women have to deal with, especially real Black women. Chanel has breast cancer and Chanel is pregnant.

Not only does she have to decide whether to undergo a treatment that could save her life while possibly harming her unborn child, but she has to do it while being treated like a statistic. Chanel's very real rant about the reality that very real Black women in America face daily was both moving and infuriating because Chanel was right.

Chanel is going through the fight of her life and we are rooting for her. Because this is what soaps are all about. True-to-life, compelling stories we can all relate to, but told on a more dramatic scale. Give us a little more of that each day and we'll want to watch more.
