In the square, Xander informed Gabi and Philip that EJ had ordered full payment on their loan. Alex overheard as he walked by. When Alex asked how EJ had learned about Gabi’s money, Philip explained that EJ had seen them celebrating in the square. Gabi admitted that EJ had confronted her, and she had gloated as well. Furious, Alex yelled at all three for making matters worse. Xander argued that EJ would have discovered the truth on his own, and Gabi agreed that it had been inevitable.

Stephanie went to the hospital to talk to her mother about her fight with Alex. After Stephanie told Kayla about Joy’s demands and the argument they'd had, she admitted that she was worried that it could end her marriage. Kayla assured Stephanie that Alex just needed time.

At the Brady Pub, Javi told Rafe he was going with him to Alamainia. Across the bar, Joy winced in pain as she tried to lift Kelsey’s carrier. Javi rushed over to assess Joy’s injury and asked Rafe to call 911. When Javi, Rafe, and Kelsey arrived at the hospital, Javi notified Kayla that Joy had been brought in by ambulance. Kayla rushed to attend to Joy.

Kayla assessed the numbness in Joy’s arm. Joy started to ask for Alex, but she amended her request to Philip since the injury was hers and not Kelsey. Kayla noted that the issue was likely related to Joy’s car accident.

In the hallway, Alex arrived after he overheard Philip on the phone with Kayla. Rafe turned Kelsey over to him. Stephanie asked Alex about Joy’s condition, so he told Stephanie that Joy had experienced some numbness in her arm. When Stephanie offered to stay with Kelsey while Alex visited Joy, he declined. Alex pushed the stroller into Joy’s exam room. While Kayla went to check in with the imagining department, Joy told Alex that she was worried about the long-term issues with her arm. Alex assured Joy that things would be fine. Joy admitted that she was relieved that Alex had joined her at the hospital instead of Philip.

Stephanie intercepted Kayla in the hallway. Kayla confirmed that there was no diagnosis yet. When Stephanie mentioned that Alex had declined her offer to watch the baby, Kayla noted that Alex had likely wanted to honor Joy’s wishes. Stephanie groaned, saying that Joy would ruin her life with her “weekly emergencies.” Stephanie argued that she was concerned that Joy was faking her injury, but Kayla cautioned Stephanie not to let her imagination run wild. Kayla refused to give specifics, and she warned Stephanie that Joy might have a long recovery ahead of her.

After testing, Kayla informed Joy and Alex that Joy had spinal stenosis. Kayla assured Joy that the condition was treatable. Alex returned to the waiting room, and he told Stephanie about the diagnosis. Alex added that he had decided to move into Joy’s room at the pub since Stephanie could not be around Kelsey. Stephanie said no.

Blame game

In the square, Xander apologized to Gabi for the loss of her inheritance money. With a shrug, Gabi noted that the money had not really been hers to begin with. Gabi suggested that she use the fortune she still had in the stock market, but Philip and Xander agreed that it would take years to make the kind of money that they needed.

While Gabi stepped away, Xander and Philip beat themselves up over their mistakes. Xander argued that Victor had been right about him. Philip disagreed and said that Victor had known that Xander was a hard worker. Philip argued that his actions with the forged letter had been the bigger issue, because his ego had caused the family’s downfall. With a sigh, Xander noted that their actions had not mattered if they had always been destined to lose the company.

After Xander left, Philip was tempted to place a sports bet online, but Gabi returned before he could finish the transaction. Gabi asked Philip if he was okay. “I will be,” Philip said. At the Kiriakis mansion, a teary-eyed Xander wondered aloud how to tell his daughter that he lost her legacy. Xander looked at Victor’s portrait. “I failed you both,” Xander whispered.

Escape from Alamainia

When Rafe and Javi returned to the Brady Pub, Rafe refused to take Javi with him to Alamainia because he was a civilian. Rafe asked Javi why he wanted to go after Leo when they were no longer an item. Javi explained that he still cared about his former partner, and he needed to actively do something to help Leo. Rafe asked about Gus. Javi told Rafe that he had talked things over with Gus, and he had understood Javi’s point of view. Rafe smiled, clearly not believing that Javi was over Leo. When Javi confirmed there were no seats left on the flight, Rafe told Javi to take that as a sign to stay home.

In Dimitri’s Alamainian house, Leo told Gwen not to worry about poisoning as he wolfed down strudel. Dimitri walked into the room and offered to show Leo to his bedroom. Leo mentioned that Chad knew where he was and that he would not be staying long. With a smirk, Dimitri said that no one cared enough about Leo to notice that he was missing. Dimitri argued that he was the only person that cared about Leo. Gwen countered that Dimitri was wrong and that people loved Leo. “Most of all me,” Gwen said as she slipped her hand into Leo’s.

When Dimitri reminded Gwen that she had easily turned on Leo before, Gwen said she was thankful that Leo had opened her eyes to Dimitri’s true nature. Gwen added that Leo deserved better. As Gwen rattled off Leo’s good traits, Dimitri argued that Leo’s good heart was how he had lured him to Alamainia. Dimitri reminded Leo that he had loved him enough to go to prison for him, and he believed that Leo would remember how much he loved Dimitri too.

Dimitri reminded Gwen and Leo of how they had hurt one another. Gwen argued that she and Leo had moved past their anger because of their strong bond of friendship. When Leo argued that the ISA would save them, Dimitri explained that he had made his point to Gwen, and that he intended to move them somewhere where they would never be found. After Dimitri left the room, Gwen and Leo formulated a plan to escape. Leo pretended to have appendicitis when Dimitri returned. Dimitri called their bluff, and Leo was forced to admit he was fine.
