At Marlena’s place, Marlena became emotional as she gazed at pictures of John. When Roman arrived, he gave his crying ex a hug. Marlena explained that Belle and Brady had taken Rachel back to Bayview and apologized for her demeanor. Roman assured her she had nothing to be sorry for and offered Marlena one of Caroline’s favorite dishes for comfort food. Marlena thanked him and opened up about how she had good days and bad days regarding John.

Roman wanted to help make Christmas a good day for Marlena, so he invited her on a “field trip.” Later, Marlena and Roman strolled through Horton Town Square and admired the holiday decorations. They reminisced about a decoration-decked street they used to visit: a tradition Marlena and John had carried forward. Marlena admitted the outing had lifted her spirits. Roman had another stop he wanted to make with Marlena: the Brady Pub.

At the pub, Kate enjoyed a Christmas meal with Philip and Lucas. Mother and sons discussed Lucas’ thaw with Sami, who had sent her ex an engagement announcement. Lucas revealed he, too, was seeing someone new. He wouldn’t divulge any details about the woman to a prodding Kate, due to Kate’s well-known issues with the rest of Lucas’ loves.

Lucas turned the subject to Philip and his own newfound happiness with Gabi. When Philip confessed he hadn’t felt so happy for a long time, Kate warned him not to invoke Chloe’s name. Both sons jokingly agreed to nix any talk of “that woman,” so Philip asked about the manuscript from Bonnie he’d seen on Kate’s desk. Kate rolled her eyes and indicated she wouldn’t be reading the romance novel. Philip and Lucas urged her to give it a chance, and Philip even chided his brother about Lucas’ probable inclusion in Bonnie’s romantic exploits.

After Philip took his leave, Kate and Lucas were joined by Roman and Marlena, and pleasantries were exchanged. Marlena commended Sami and Lucas on making amends for the sake of their kids. The talk of their grandchildren prompted Kate and Marlena to discuss Will’s development of a new screenplay. Kate suggested Will would be an ideal fit for a planned adaptation of Stephanie’s novel into a movie. She believed the project could reverse Titan’s fortunes.

Roman brought up Stephanie’s recent troubles with the stalkerish fan, which Steve had apparently told him about. Kate reassured him she wasn’t taking the situation lightly, as she had hired extra security. When Roman mentioned Black Patch, Marlena got upset again and stepped away to the bar. Roman went to comfort her and gave Marlena another embrace.

From the table, Kate eyed the exchange with a hint of irritation and possible jealousy.

At Alex and Stephanie’s apartment, Alex fretted over his burned lasagna, which had been a recipe from Adrienne. Stephanie comforted him with kisses…until Steve walked in on the intimate moment. He apologized and explained he’d come to watch the game, since Kayla had to work for the holiday. Someone knocked on the door, and the group was surprised and delighted to see Kayla. She had gotten someone to cover her shift at work.

Following the holiday cheer and greetings, Steve and Kayla got down to discussing the stalker situation with Stephanie and Alex. Stephanie broached the possibility of Jeremy as a suspect, since they knew the person lived in Salem, could write left-handed, and had an obsession with Stephanie. Kayla cautioned the group not to jump to conclusions. Steve pledged he would faithfully pursue all leads. Kayla also managed to convince Steve to come home with her for the night, since she’d gotten Jada to post a guard outside; she acknowledged Stephanie and Alex’s silent signal of thanks for the gesture.

Before Steve left, he shared a moment with Alex in which he commended Adrienne’s stepson for pulling off her favorite recipe. He also thankAlex for treating Stephanie so well and stated that he was happy Alex was in his daughter’s life. When the parents left, Stephanie and Alex made the most of their alone time. They exchanged gifts meant to enhance said alone time.

Meanwhile, Steve and Kayla took their holiday celebration to Horton Town Square. Steve, who had donned his Patchy Claus hat, looked forward to the family’s upcoming trip to China for Tripp and Wendy’s wedding. During the conversation, he noted the mistletoe hanging above them and pulled Kayla into a kiss.

At the Hernandez home, Gabi and Ari busied themselves in the kitchen with dinner preparations. At the mention of Leo’s name, Ari tensed up and made a comment about their houseguest. Gabi acknowledged Ari’s feelings about Leo but reminded her that Javi loved his fiancé, and Leo loved Javi. “For now,” Ari snarked. The mood did not lighten when Rafe arrived home.

Rafe immediately confessed that he had difficult news to break and told Gabi about Stefan's presumed dead. She sat down, stunned and in disbelief. Gabi doubted both Peter and Vivian’s claims. She affirmed that she would know in her heart if Stefan was truly gone. She vowed to go to Alamainia and get the truth for herself.

Rafe stressed that the FBI was working to confirm Vivian’s claims. Hesitantly, he showed Gabi a picture on his phone that Vivian had sent to him. It was of Stefan’s headstone, with his date of death apparently a few months prior. The picture seemed to somewhat convince Gabi. She asked how Stefan had died.

Rafe relayed Vivian’s claim that Stefan’s transplanted heart had given out on him. That piece of information convinced Gabi even more. She tried to brush off her feelings and said she didn’t know why she was so upset. Despite Rafe and Ari’s attempts to comfort her, Gabi claimed she needed air and rushed off.

Once alone with Rafe, Ari worried about how Gabi was taking the news. Rafe believed his sister would get through it, especially since she had Philip. Perhaps Stefan’s death would give her needed closure. Ari countered that it could send her spiraling instead. Rafe reminded his niece that her mother was a strong woman who had successfully navigated many struggles during her life.

Rafe distracted Ari from her concern by asking about her new internship. Ari insisted her mom’s reaction was overblown and that she’d just be sorting mail and other routine duties at DiMera Enterprises. Rafe’s ears perked up when Ari revealed that her Grandma Kate – who worked for competitor Titan – had gotten Ari the job.

Back in Horton Town Square, a somber Gabi sat on a bench. Philip spotted her and happily began making plans for their Christmas. He quickly took note of Gabi’s dejected state, though, and asked what was wrong. Gabi told him about Stefan’s alleged death. She again beat herself up for taking the news so hard.

Philip, however, affirmed that Gabi had every right to her feelings because she once deeply loved Stefan. Moreover, the latest news was likely bringing up painful memories of the last time Gabi had lost Stefan. Gabi thanked Philip for his understanding and expressed gratitude for his kind words. Philip extended her an invitation back to his place so they could watch a movie or just talk. With a smile, Gabi took his hand and accepted.
