What Happened on Days of our Lives

At the hospital, Leo stopped by to visit Marlena. He had brought Marlena some drag queen-themed adult coloring books to help her relax. She said the gifts were almost as nice as seeing Leo. After ensuring that Marlena was feeling better, Leo said he had something very important to ask her: would she officiate his wedding to Javi?
Marlena beamed and congratulated Leo. He happily told her all about the proposal. When Leo noted that Marlena seemed sad, she hinted at a family situation that was all her fault because she had made “a terrible error in judgment.” Leo found Marlena’s claims hard to believe but assured her that things would get better. Marlena wasn’t so confident since the “damage was already done.” Leo said that while Marlena may have felt fallible, she was “infallible” to him.
Leo credited Marlena for everything positive in his life. He couldn’t stress enough how much she meant to him. The friends got to work on their coloring books and made a date for a Drag Race marathon. Marlena thanked Leo for providing her a much-needed distraction and de-stressor.
At Marlena’s place, Tate met with Brady. Father and son discussed Rachel’s commitment to Bayview. Brady opened up about how difficult it had been, especially after Rachel had begged him to take her home. Tate hugged his dad, who admitted that he had a specific reason for taking Rachel to Bayview. He then confided in his son about Rachel’s attack against Sarah and her shooting of EJ. While Tate absorbed the shocking news, Brady explained that the girl’s doctors had talked about Rachel’s lack of impulse control.
Brady asked Tate not to give anyone details about Rachel’s hospitalization. Tate pledged he wouldn’t, including to Holly. Brady conceded he didn’t know how long Rachel would be hospitalized.
At the Kiriakis mansion, Kate visited Maggie. After the two got caught up on Thanksgiving, Kate got down to business and informed Maggie that Stephanie’s novel was “under-performing.” Maggie acknowledged the difficulty of asking romance fans to transition to the mystery genre, but was encouraged that so many fans had made the move. The talk turned to Titan’s overall struggles. When Maggie said she didn’t want to lay off workers during the holidays, Kate accused her of being “too soft.” Kate had heard rumors that Maggie was considering using the mansion as collateral instead of laying off people.
Maggie defended her decision, but Kate thought they had an opening to resolve Titan’s staffing woes. Since many Titan employees had been lost to DiMera Enterprises once the merger was undone, Kate believed they could woo the high-performing employees back because those employees were dissatisfied with Theo’s appointment as CEO. Maggie wasn’t receptive to the idea because she considered it unethical to take advantage of the DiMera family’s recent troubles. Moreover, Tony knew about Philip’s fraud and could expose the deception at any time if he was found. Maggie essentially told Kate to stick to her duties with the publishing department and sent the woman on her way.
Later, Brady arrived at the mansion. He apologized for Sarah’s hospitalization because it was his fault. Brady then told a shocked Maggie about Rachel’s involvement in the allergic reaction. He had wanted to confide in her because she was his sponsor and someone he deeply loved. Brady was also struggling because someone else he loved and trusted had known about Rachel’s problems and hadn’t informed him: Marlena.
Brady remained vague on what Marlena had known, but she had broken his trust in a major way. Maggie tried to see things from Marlena’s perspective, but Brady couldn’t yet forgive her. He didn’t even want to live with her anymore. He reassured Maggie that he would not drink or use drugs and that he had been to a meeting.
Maggie spoke of how Kate had reminded her about the importance of home. She invited Brady and Rachel to stay with her until Brady found a place of his own. Brady gladly accepted the offer, with a forewarning that the family came with a three-foot snake. Maggie and he embraced.
In Horton Town Square, Holly ran into Ari and fretted about Tate’s lack of response to her texts. She wondered if her boyfriend was mad at her. Ari came up with excuses as to why Tate had lost touch, but Holly worried something was wrong.
Later, Holly and Ari encountered Tate outside the Brady Pub. He updated them on Marlena’s pacemaker surgery and Rachel’s admission to Bayview. True to his word, he did not clarify why his sister was in the mental hospital. When he said he was going to visit his sister immediately, Ari thought back to Tate stating he’d flunk out of college if he didn’t ace upcoming tests. She reminded him he had a class, but Tate reiterated he had to go.
Ari and Holly went into the pub and commiserated over Tate’s news. Holly wished she could do something for him. She changed the subject to Ari and her search for an internship. Ari was growing frustrated with the uncertainty at Titan. Kate and Roman soon joined their granddaughter after Holly departed. Kate asked Ari how she felt about Leo’s imminent addition to the family. Ari admitted she was having trouble with it given what Leo had done to her dads.
Roman defended Leo somewhat and said that since Marlena believed in Leo’s reformation, he trusted her opinion. Ari said that while she didn’t hate Leo, she just didn’t want him as part of her family. Once Roman stepped away, Ari asked Kate about the proposed internship. Kate admitted it wasn’t likely in the cards due to the “restructuring” at Titan, but she did have an idea. Kate offered to put in a good word for Ari with her contacts at DiMera Enterprises.
At Bayview, Sophia snuck into Rachel’s room and broke into a big smile after greeting the little girl. Rachel was confused, as Tate had told her that Sophia couldn’t talk. Sophia confessed she only wanted to people to think she was incapable of speaking because “it gives me the upper hand.” Sophia clarified that she had originally lost her voice, but when she’d found it again, she wasn’t ready to let anyone know. Rachel wondered why Sophia had talked to her; Sophia said she’d seen Rachel all alone and felt like someone needed to be with her.
When Rachel asked if Sophia would ever talk to other people again, Sophia replied that “sometimes it’s best not to let people know what you’re capable of.” Rachel understood the sentiment. The girls talked about Rachel’s stuffed snake and her real snake, whom Sophia had already met when she was with Tate. Rachel bemoaned not being able to go home. Sophia told her Bayview wasn’t so bad, especially since Rachel had a friend…her.
Rachel said she didn’t even know Sophia that well, but Sophia thought the little girl and she had a lot of things in common, including Tate and Bayview. Sophia inquired why Rachel had been sent there. Rachel admitted it was because she had made “two people almost die.” Rachel added that the events had been sort-of accidents. Sophia then asked if Rachel knew who had adopted her baby, but before the girl could respond, Tate opened the door and stepped inside.
Sophia instantly put on her blank expression. A puzzled Tate asked why she was in Rachel’s room. Sophia winked at Rachel and stood up, still staring ahead. Rachel covered for her and said Sophia had wandered into her room, but hadn’t said anything. Tate addressed Sophia and said he would visit her later, but he wanted privacy with his sister; Sophia turned and walked out of the room.
Tate sat with Rachel and tried to cheer his sister up, to no avail. Rachel insisted she wanted to go home. A nurse arrived and told Tate visiting hours were over. Rachel got upset. Tate could only look at her apologetically and promise he’d be back soon.
Later, Tate paid a visit to Sophia. The conversation got awkward as Sophia still wouldn’t respond to any of Tate’s words. He wished she could tell him what had happened. Eventually, he offered his hopes for her recovery and departed.
Meanwhile, Holly returned to Horton Town Square and sorted through Stephanie’s fan mail. She grew concerned when she came across a letter that stated, “You are so beautiful. My heart yearns for the day when you realize we belong together.” Later, Holly was distracted by Tate’s arrival. He sadly stated that the visit with his sister hadn’t gone well, and Holly comforted him with a hug.
Back at Bayview, Sophia returned to Rachel’s room. She said how nice it was of Tate to visit his sister, but Rachel was still downtrodden. Sophia broached the subject of the adoption again. She implored Rachel to tell her that Johnny and Chanel hadn’t adopted her baby. Rachel reluctantly admitted they had and asked Sophia not to be mad at her.
Sophia smiled and assured Rachel it wasn’t her fault. When Sophia turned away, her smile faded. She crumpled the cup in her hand, her face full of rage.
