What Happened on Days of our Lives

At the hospital, Belle met with EJ in his office. He assumed she wanted to talk about Peter, but Belle presented her ex with papers to sign regarding Kristen and Rachel. She had wanted to ensure he wouldn’t put up a fight with her plan to get Kristen released from prison while not publicly incriminating Rachel. EJ signed the papers, then asked Belle how she’d reacted when he had disappeared. Belle conceded that Salem would be a much duller place without EJ in it; her admission drew a grin from EJ.
At the nurses’ station, Chad literally bumped into Cat and sent her papers sprawling across the floor. He bent to help her pick them up. Before the two could share a moment, Cat hurriedly gathered the papers and urged Chad to go before someone could spot them together. After Chad departed, EJ approached and asked Cat what had happened. She told him about her chance encounter with Chad and again blamed herself for his custody troubles.
EJ reassured Cat that she had nothing to feel guilty about, as she had been under duress from Clyde. EJ had every confidence that in time, Thomas would come around just like Chad had. He reiterated that Jennifer had no right to punish Chad for his choice of relationships, and the attorney reaffirmed he would do everything in his power to reach an amicable settlement. EJ also apologized to Cat for trying to kiss her and possibly making her uncomfortable, but it was Cat’s turn to assure EJ that he had done nothing wrong.
In Kristen’s hospital room, Brady filled Kristen in on his Christmas with Rachel. While Kristen was happy that her daughter had gotten time with family, she still worried that recanting her confession would cause Rachel to be shamed publicly. Brady pledged that Belle and he both were working hard to ensure that didn’t happen. When Kristen mentioned the uncertainty of her own future living arrangement, Brady told her about his move from Marlena’s place to the Kiriakis mansion. At Kristen’s objections to Brady’s anger at Marlena, Brady clarified that Marlena and he both had worked past their issues.
Melinda soon entered the room as well, to Kristen’s surprise. Brady begrudgingly acknowledged that he had hired Melinda to represent Kristen, since Melinda had served as her lawyer previously. After making a snarky comment directed at Brady, Melinda informed Kristen of the charges they would need to clear up: the attempted murder confession, Kristen’s “escape” from prison…and what had happened in the crypt with Peter.
Kristen grew sorrowful and remorseful at the mention of her brother’s condition. She was able to pull herself together long enough, though, to sign the papers Belle brought by for her – after extracting a pledge that her recantation would not hurt Rachel. Once the papers were signed, Brady stepped outside with sister, and thanked Belle for all she had done for Kristen and for Rachel. Belle was relieved justice would be served, although she believed Kristen still deserved to be in prison for past crimes.
At Bayview, Rachel startled Sophia by sneaking up behind her with a New Year’s streamer. Sophia quickly put on a smile and asked Rachel about her Christmas. Rachel was happy but also sad to be back in Bayview, especially now that her mom was safe. She asked Sophia about her holiday, and the older girl confided that she hadn’t gotten many visitors and didn’t have many friends left, other than Tate. She also said she had no plans of going back home to her parents, who always fought – and especially to her mother, who expected her to be perfect.
Sophia promised Rachel their “next adventure” would be a step up from a fast-food run. Rachel wondered if Sophia planned to run away during the next outing. Sophia admitted she might, but not before taking care of unfinished business in Salem. Rachel said that no matter what anyone else thought of Sophia, she liked her new friend. Sophia returned the sentiment, and Rachel returned to her room.
Sophia did not have long to drop her ruse, though, because someone else paid her a visit: Melinda. Sophia’s former lawyer sat with the teen, who had resumed her blank stare expression. Sophia’s façade began to crack when Melinda stated with sympathy that she did not want Sophia to be alone during the holidays. She had been thinking of her client a great deal. When Melinda pulled Sophia into a hug, Sophia softly cried.
In Rachel’s room, the mood was decidedly more upbeat after Brady surprised Rachel with a visit. She rushed into his arms and immediately asked about her mom. Brady said Kristen’s release was moving through the legal channels, which made Rachel very happy.
Back at the hospital, Tony and Chad convened in EJ’s office for a meeting about Peter. Chad didn’t believe their brother should be taken off life support, Tony had mixed feelings, but EJ was adamant that they should end Peter before he got another opportunity to hurt the family. Tony and Chad were eventually able to persuade EJ that the decision should be left up to Kristen. Later, EJ received a call from his daughter Sydney, who was apparently in hysterics.
In Peter’s hospital room, Kristen sat by her brother’s bedside and apologized both for what had happened to him and for failing to see Peter was in such pain and torment for so long. Most of all, she apologized for becoming a DiMera in a way that Peter never had. They were her family, “for better or worse.”
At the nurses’ station, EJ saw both Belle and Chad again. He told them separately that he would be leaving town for a few weeks to visit with Sydney. His daughter had been inconsolable since his kidnapping and needed to see her dad was okay for herself. During his conversation with Chad, EJ urged his brother to keep fighting for his children.
Later, EJ caught Cat snooping around his desk. She claimed she was straightening it up. Distracted, EJ accepted the explanation. He updated Cat on his imminent departure. He wanted her to oversee things at the office in his absence.
Back in Peter’s room, Chad and Tony told Kristen they would leave the decision about Peter’s care to her, since she was closest to him. Kristen considered it more a burden than a decision, and she pondered aloud if Peter and she were ever truly considered part of the family since they were adopted. Tony reminded her that Stefano was not his biological father either. Chad added that the circumstances did not change how he felt about Tony…or Kristen. Tony and Chad fiercely stressed that Kristen was and always would be their sister.
When her brothers asked if Kristen had made a decision, she said that the faith her biological parents had instilled in Peter and her as children had helped guide her. She didn’t want her brother to suffer and would therefore have his life support removed. Whether or not Peter could survive without it would be “in God’s hands.”
Later, Kristen shared another private moment with her brother. She tearfully compelled him to fight. She couldn’t live with herself if she was the reason Peter died.
