At Marlena’s place, Tate braced himself to spend New Year’s Eve studying and playing video games when he received a welcome visitor at the door: Holly. Tate was overjoyed to see his girlfriend -- whom he hadn’t expected back until after the new year -- and invited her inside. Holly explained she had caught an early flight to surprise Tate. After hugs, kisses, and a beret for Tate were exchanged, Holly filled Tate in on her Paris trip. A highlight had been spending time with her little brother Jude, who was learning to speak French.

The talk of family prompted Holly to ask about Rachel and Brady. Tate admitted it had been difficult with Rachel, but her brief trip home for Christmas had proven to be a bright spot…along with Kristen’s return from captivity. Tate didn’t really know why Brady was still staying at the Kiriakis mansion, though, since Marlena and he had made amends. When Holly learned they were alone for the night, she suggested they spend the night inside. Later, the couple cuddled and watched the ball drop.

At the Kiriakis mansion, Sarah found Brady working in his room. She lightly chastised him for making New Year’s a work day and invited him downstairs for popcorn, champagne, and her company. Brady didn’t need much convincing, but as they prepared to leave the room, Sarah awkwardly brought up their mistletoe kiss. Brady quickly shot down Sarah’s suggestion that it had been an obligatory kiss. He admitted he couldn’t stop thinking about it as he moved closer.

Maggie made an unexpected appearance, however, and ended the moment. She said she’d just gotten home from picking Holly up at the airport. While Maggie had looked taken aback by the near-kiss, she insisted it was none of her business when Brady started to explain. She declined Sarah’s invitation to join them downstairs for an impromptu celebration and left for her bedroom.

Brady was mortified that Maggie had nearly caught Sarah and he kissing. Sarah joked about it and observed they were alone again. The duo had another moment, until Sarah reminded Brady they should get downstairs to celebrate. When Brady looked at his phone, though, he sheepishly informed Sarah that midnight had already passed. He softly wished Sarah a happy new year, then pulled her in for another kiss.

At the Horton house, Julie and Jeremy enjoyed a game of Scrabble. Julie felt guilty for keeping Jeremy from bigger plans. Jeremy assured Julie he was exactly where he wanted to be…with one of his favorite people. Julie kidded Jeremy about dreading the renewal of the school year, but Jeremy said he was looking forward to it. He admitted it had been more challenging at school because of Thomas and Rachel’s recent struggles, and especially because he couldn’t provide real updates for the kids who had asked about Rachel’s sudden absences.

Jeremy also confided the hurt he felt about being accused of stalking Stephanie. He had been giving a lot of thought to leaving Salem again when his substitute teacher tenure ended. Julie urged Jeremy to rethink his plans. If he believed no one wanted him around, that wasn’t true – Julie loved having him home. Jeremy thanked her for the love and support she’d shown him. He promised not to make a hasty decision.

Later, Jeremy provided a skeptical Julie with a party hat and insisted they ring in the new year. Julie declared her resolution to be “less judgmental and more sympathetic,” while Jeremy remained vague on his resolution. As midnight hit, Julie wished that all of Salem have a good year.

In Horton Town Square, a stunned Leo confronted a seemingly equally stunned Dimitri. When Leo asked where his ex had been, Dimitri told a story about being kidnapped on his way out of prison and then taken to Alamainia. His captors had given him anything he wanted, except the one thing he had wanted most: the man he loved. Leo wondered where the man was, and Dimitri declared he was standing right before him. Dimitri loved Leo and no one else.

Leo brought up the letter he’d gotten. Dimitri clarified he had been forced to right the letter at gunpoint…and at a threat to Leo’s life as well. Although he didn’t know the identity of the person calling the shots on his kidnapping, Dimitri said he had a pretty good idea and shot a glare at Gwen when she sidled up beside him. Gwen denied the allegation and reminded Leo that she’d hired him to find Dimitri.

Leo indicated it didn’t matter because he had moved on and found love with someone else. After Dimitri asked with who, Leo announced, “The man beside me…the man I just married.” Dimitri absorbed the news, but neither Leo nor Javi were convinced that Dimitri didn’t already know about the wedding, given his timing. Gathering himself, Dimitri detailed how he’d suddenly been taken from his place of captivity and dumped off near Horton Town Square. He had immediately made his way to the Salem Inn because Leo had lived there previously.

Dimitri insisted he had no idea that he would find himself in the middle of Leo’s wedding. He believed the timing implicated Gwen even more. She could “kill two birds with one stone” by interrupting the wedding and breaking Dimitri’s heart at the same time. Leo said the ceremony had already been concluded. Dimitri revealed his flight had been delayed, so Gwen was likely seething that he hadn’t arrived in time to stop the wedding.

While Gwen scoffed, Leo reiterated that Javi and he were already married…until Javi reminded him that Marlena had to formally file the papers. Javi then shocked Leo by stating that he was going to track down Marlena and tell her not to file the papers yet. Javi wanted Leo to sort out his feelings about Dimitri before they made it official. Dimitri broke into a hopeful smile, Gwen smirked with satisfaction, and Leo vehemently protested. But Javi’s mind was set, as he doubted Leo would have ever fallen for him if he'd known the truth about Dimitri.

“This isn’t forever, unless you want it to be,” he said to Leo. “Happy New Year,” Javi bitterly added before walking off. Leo immediately turned his ire to both Gwen and Dimitri. He railed at Dimitri for making him feel love, then hatred, and now uncertainty. Leo, finally speechless, said he didn’t know how to feel. “Join the club,” Gwen snarked at Leo as he left.

Once they were alone, Dimitri told Gwen he knew she was responsible and would prove it. After nasty words were exchanged, Dimitri vowed to make Gwen pay.

A shaken Leo returned to his darkened room, empty save for rose petals strewn in a heart shape on the floor, along with a loving note from Javi. Meanwhile, Javi broke down in tears at the park.
