What happened on Days of our Lives

As Theo lay unconscious in the hospital, Abe and Paulina sat at his bedside. Paulina blew a New Year’s Eve paper horn. “Knowing how much he hates loud noises, I thought I might 'annoy' him awake,” Paulina explained. Theo did not move. “Thank you for trying," Abe said. After a moment, Theo groaned. “Dad?” Theo said. While Abe asked Theo what he remembered, Paulina left to retrieve a doctor. Theo stammered Peter’s name.
“Peter Blake is never going to hurt you again,” Abe reassured Theo. The doctor examined Theo, and he said that he believed that Theo could make a full recovery. After the doctor left, Theo asked about his family. Abe assured Theo that everyone was safe. Theo asked about Peter. Abe argued that Theo needed to rest and that they would talk about it later.
When Paulina returned from making phone calls to family and friends, Abe admitted he had never stopped praying to god and Lexie for Theo to recover. “I guess they heard your prayers,” Theo said.
At the wedding reception for Leo and Javi, Marlena, Rafe, and Gabi wondered why Leo and Javi were taking so long with the photographer. As Gabi suggested a toast to the new year, Chad walked up and asked about the newlyweds. Javi walked in, and the crowd erupted in cheers.
“Where’s Leo?” Chad asked. “He’s not coming,” Javi said. Javi explained that Dimitri had returned. “I told Leo that he and I can’t move forward until he resolves his feelings for his ex,” Javi said. Javi asked Marlena to hold off on filing the marriage certificate with the court.
“Is that what Leo wants?” Marlena asked. “No, it’s what I want,” Javi said. Javi stressed that he needed Leo to choose him out of love, not obligation. Marlena told Javi that she would hold off until Javi told her to proceed. Chad suggested that Javi should go home, but Javi refused to skip the party. “Can’t let it go to waste,” Javi said before he chugged from a bottle of Champagne.
At the Salem Inn, Leo looked around sadly at the room he had set up for his wedding night with Javi. Leo walked out, and he went down to the square. The last of the wedding decorations were being removed. As Leo stood in the square, Chad and Marlena called out to him. Leo explained what had happened with Dimitri. “Where’s Dimitri?” Chad asked. Leo explained that he had stormed off and left Dimitri behind. Chad offered to find Dimitri so that Leo could talk to him.
“I think I just need some time to process all this,” Leo said. Leo encouraged Chad to celebrate New Year’s Eve, and Chad left for home. When Leo suggested that Marlena leave as well, she refused. “I’m exactly where I want to be, right now, with you,” Marlena said.
Marlena and Leo sat on a bench together, and she encouraged Leo to talk to her as a friend. “I spent my entire life chasing after men who didn’t want me, being rejected by men who thought I was too much or too little. All I ever wanted was one man who thought I was just right, who treated me with kindness and respect, who thought I was worthy of love,” Leo said. “And now you have two,” Marlena said. Leo noted that he had never been more miserable in his life.
“I know what it’s like to have to choose between two men that you love,” Marlena said. Marlena talked about her history with John and Roman, and her connection to John. “You realized that [John] was your one true love,” Leo said. Marlena nodded yes. “But not before I put so many people through anguish,” Marlena said. Marlena advised Leo to listen to his heart.
Leo talked about how Dimitri's betrayal had helped him move on to find love with Javi. “[Javi’s] the closest thing to perfect,” Leo said. “If Dimitri had not abandoned you of his own free will, would you still want a second chance with him?” Marlena asked. Leo avoided the question. “I don’t want to lose Javi. I don’t want to lose the man that I have become with him by my side,” Leo said. Leo admitted he did not know what to do. Marlena encouraged Leo to get some sleep and call her if he needed her.
At the reception, an increasingly drunk Javi argued with Rafe and Gabi, who wanted to cut him off from alcohol. “I married Leo knowing that he never got closure from his ex, that his unresolved feelings for Dimitri would come back and haunt us one day. And they did,” Javi complained. Rafe argued that Dimitri’s return was too big a coincidence.
“What does it matter why he is back in town. He’s back, okay? And my relationship with Leo very well may be over,” Javi said. “I refuse to believe that,” Gabi said. Rafe cursed the Dimeras. Gabi and Rafe both told Javi that he was the best thing that had ever happened to Leo. “He’s not going to throw away what you two have to go back to a toxic jerk like Dimitri von Loser,” Gabi said. Javi laughed, and he thanked his cousins for working to cheer him up. “Leo needs some time. And I do too,” Javi said.
When Rafe and Gabi got Javi home, he stumbled back to his bedroom. “What a horrible way to start the new year,” Gabi said. “I don’t think Leo’s is starting any better,” Rafe said. Rafe and Gabi toasted to the New Year and for Javi. Gabi confessed that she hoped Leo would return. In Javi’s bedroom, Javi climbed into bed and kissed his wedding ring. At the Salem Inn, Leo furiously shoved all the rose petals off the bed, then climbed under the covers alone.
When Chad returned home, Julie was still awake. “How was the wedding?” Julie asked. Chad told Julie what had happened. Chad and Julie talked about Chad’s kidnapping and how it had softened Jack and Jennifer’s stance on the custody case.
“There’s some stuff to iron out, and I’m not sure we’re gonna be able to come to an agreement,” Chad said. “I can’t take sides, Chad,” Julie said. Julie stressed that she only wanted what was best for the kids. Chad said he understood. Chad thanked Julie for her help with the kids.
“I love the children, and I love their daddy. And the fact that you were living in this house when I lost Doug saved me. I mean, without your constant support and attention, I know I wouldn’t be the functioning widow I am today,” Julie said. Julie added that the children and Chad had been a light for her in her darkest hours.
Paulina called Julie to tell her about Theo. Julie fought back happy tears as she told Chad the good news. As Chad and Julie resumed their chat, Julie apologized for having likely influenced Thomas, Jack, and Jennifer’s feelings toward Cat. “That’s not on you,” Chad said. Chad explained that he had let himself fall for Cat.
“You think you could control love?” Julie asked. Julie admitted that she knew how difficult it was to walk away from love. “My kids are my priority. Making sure they’re happy and healthy, that’s the only thing I care about,” Chad said. Chad and Julie toasted to a happier new year.
In the DiMera living room, Dimitri startled Gwen when he walked in. “What the hell are you doing here?” Gwen asked. “I suppose I could ask you the same thing,” Dimitri countered. Gwen explained that she lived in the mansion. Dimitri announced that he planned to move into the house. Gwen refused to let Dimitri move back in. When Dimitri called Gwen a golddigger, she reminded Dimitri that she had married him for love. Dimitri scoffed. Gwen argued that she had ignored the red flags because Dimitri had made her feel like he had actually loved her.
“As if you haven’t told a boatload of [lies] yourself,” Dimitri said. Gwen agreed. “But as I said, I married you for love. And you deceived me. You used me to get your hands on your inheritance,” Gwen argued. Dimitri noted that his wealth had gone to Gwen. “You took over my life. You stole my fortune. You even scored an invitation to squat in the family home!” Dimitri yelled. Gwen explained that EJ had shown her kindness after Dimitri had hurt her.
“You are a kidnapper,” Dimitri said. Gwen laughed. “In fact, I spent months trying to track you down,” Gwen countered. Dimitri scoffed at the idea. Dimitri argued that he would go to the ISA, but Gwen reminded him that he had burned that bridge over the Alamanian Peacock heist.
“You have zero proof that I have anything to do with your disappearance,” Gwen said. “You’re right. But it’s only a matter of time before I do,” Dimitri growled. With a smirk, Dimitri told Gwen that he was eager to divorce her and leave her penniless. Gwen reminded Dimitri that he needed to remain married in order to keep his inheritance. Dimitri countered that he only needed to get married, not remain married.
“What was never yours to begin with will soon be mine, all mine, once again,” Dimitri said. “If you didn’t have to stay married to me, why didn’t you just divorce me then?” Gwen asked. Dimitri said he had felt sorry for Gwen, and he had felt that Gwen had deserved some compensation. “You ruined my life. I’d say we’re about even now, wouldn’t you?” Dimitri asked. Gwen suggested that Dimitri stay at the Salem Inn with Leo, but Dimitri insisted that he would stay at the Dimera mansion for the foreseeable future.
