In today’s Days of our Lives recap for July 13, 2026, Marlena counseled the DiMera women, and tensions ran high at the hospital in the wake of Joy and Kelsey’s accident.
Slow-Motion Car Crash

At the hospital, Stephanie asked Kayla how Kelsey and Joy were doing. When Kayla invoked doctor-patient confidentiality, Stephanie expressed how guilty she felt. She confided in Kayla about erasing Joy’s call to Alex from his phone. Kayla was taken aback and scolded Stephanie, but Stephanie told her mom she already knew what she had done was wrong. She’d been driven by irritation at Joy’s continued intrusions.
Before going to give an update to Alex and Joy, Kayla indicated she also had doubts about Joy. She had even informed the other woman to relay any medical issues to her directly. Stephanie was grateful and relieved that someone else suspected Joy’s motives.
Kayla made her way to Alex and Joy, who got upset as she told Alex about the accident. Kayla confirmed Joy's assertion that Kelsey appeared to be fine, minus a bruise from the car seat belt. She had ordered some tests on the little girl as a precaution. Both Joy and Alex thanked Kayla when she returned their daughter to them, with reassurances that Kelsey should likely make a full recovery. Kayla encouraged Joy to get herself checked out more in-depth, and Alex promised he was on it.

Later, Alex shouldered the blame for allowing Joy to drive on a flimsy spare tire and for not taking care of Kelsey in the interim. He hinted that he had held back on offering more help because of Stephanie. Joy assured Alex he wasn’t to blame, and she also claimed she could understand why Stephanie had grown frustrated. After all, Joy had left yet another frantic message….
Wait, Alex interjected. He hadn’t received any messages from Joy. He checked his phone to confirm, and still no messages. A puzzled Alex reaffirmed to Joy that he wanted to hear from her if Kelsey needed anything, and then he departed. Joy cuddled her daughter and pronounced coming back to Salem the best decision she could have made.
Meanwhile, back in the waiting area, Stephanie openly questioned to Kayla if Joy could have orchestrated the accident. Kayla didn’t believe Joy would go that far, and Stephanie eventually agreed that Joy was a good and loving mom who wouldn’t intentionally put her daughter in danger. Stephanie hated the jealousy and insecurity she was feeling, but she couldn’t stop thinking about how Joy had latched onto Alex the last time she was in town. She thought Joy might love him still, and Joy’s insistence that Stephanie stay away from Kelsey would only make matters worse.
Kayla imparted words of wisdom to her daughter: Stephanie could not control what Joy felt; she could only control her own actions. She had confidence that Alex and Stephanie would work it out, just as Kayla and Steve had done with Tripp and eventually, with Ava. Later, Stephanie approached Alex, who immediately cut off her protests of concern and confronted her. He had seen the phone messages in his deleted files, and he angrily wondered what was wrong with his wife. Stephanie defended herself and said she’d found it too coincidental that Joy had another emergency so soon after the last one.
Alex lashed out at Stephanie for her selfish actions and for pressuring him to choose between helping Joy and staying with her. He stressed he wasn’t blaming Stephanie for the accident, but he also stressed the status quo couldn’t continue between them. When Stephanie asked, what he meant, Alex only suggested she go home. He walked away, leaving a shaken Stephanie to ponder his words.
Queen’s Gambit

At Bayview, Kristen walked in on the unwelcome sight of Rachel bonding with her Uncle EJ over chess strategy. After not-so-subtly ordering Rachel to leave the room, Kristen demanded to know how EJ had gotten in, since she had instructed the staff to keep him away. EJ shrugged and said Kristen’s message must have gotten “lost in translation.” He claimed he was just paying his niece a friendly visit, but Kristen knew better. She accused her brother of trying to pay her back in kind for what he crazily believed she had done to Johnny.
EJ tired of Kristen’s protests of innocence and said he could see why she might think he would hurt Rachel. But he would never harm his niece. There were other ways to separate a parent and a child, as he knew too well. Kristen’s comeuppance would be hers and hers alone, and it would be swift and impactful. When Rachel returned after EJ left, she was disappointed her uncle couldn’t give her more chess pointers, but Kristen explained away his sudden departure.
Later, Marlena stopped by to visit Rachel, only to discover a visibly upset Kristen in the room instead. Kristen informed Marlena that Rachel was fine and that she had gone to practice a make-up regimen. Marlena insisted Kristen tell her what had happened, for Rachel’s sake. Kristen surprisingly opened up about EJ’s visit and her fears that EJ might somehow use Rachel in retaliation against her. She remained vague on details but implored Marlena to look after Rachel if anything should happen to her.
No Regrets, But Grievances Aplenty

Before Marlena’s encounter with Kristen, Lexie paid Marlena a visit in her office, but the friendly reunion quickly got tense. Marlena could understand why Lexie might be having difficulty readjusting, since she had experienced the same struggle years prior. Lexie requested privacy, then revealed to a stunned Marlena that she was dying once again. Marlena listened with sympathy as Lexie confided the details of her deterioration and Dr. Rolf’s failed efforts to save her. She admitted she was angry with EJ for bringing her back before he was certain the drug would work.
At the same time, Lexie tearfully affirmed she would do it all again for the opportunity to have this second — although fleeting — chance at life and at love with her family. Marlena asked how Abe and Theo were handling the news, to which Lexie confessed that she hadn’t told them. More so, she didn’t intend to let them be with her when she died. They had already suffered through the trauma once. Marlena opened up about how much it had meant to comfort and love John during his final moments.
Lexie still believed she was making the right decision for her family. She didn’t know if she would be completely alone when the time came, but she did stand by her decision about Abe and Theo. Marlena offered her support and embraced Lexie.
EJ's Worst Nightmare

Later, at the DiMera mansion, EJ got a call from Sydney and finally learned about his daughter’s planned shopping trip with Kristen. He ended the call and literally walked straight into another alarming problem: an unconscious Lexie on his floor. EJ rushed to his sister’s aid and frantically tried to revive her. He was beside himself and yelled at Rita to get Dr. Rolf after the assistant entered the room. Rita compounded his anxiety by revealing that Rolf had gone on the run again because of the FBI investigation.
EJ was irate since Rolf was supposed to stay in his secure location and help Lexie. Rita tried to tell EJ that Rolf believed nothing more could be done for Lexie, which prompted EJ to briefly direct his rage at Rita. She pledged that she hadn’t known Rolf intended to leave because he’d only left a note behind. EJ calmed somewhat when he saw Lexie stirring and got her onto the couch. He recalled that Rolf had told him bouts of faintness would not be uncommon given Lexie’s condition.
Rita asked if she could do anything for EJ. With his alarm temporarily dissipated, EJ turned his attention back to the problem of Kristen. He updated Rita about the phone call with Sydney, and Rita correctly surmised that Kristen had crossed the final line. EJ instructed Rita to get the private island ready, as it would soon have a permanent captive/resident. On the couch, Lexie’s eyes opened, and presumably overheard the entire exchange.
Will EJ send Kristen to Exile Island? Will Lexie make it for one final holiday season? Will Joy’s crash end up crashing Alex and Stephanie’s marriage? Sound off in the comments.
