In the square, a frustrated Alex told Brady that he did not understand how they could have overlooked Stephanie at the hospital. Nearby, Owen listened as the two men talked. “Please tell me that this Owen creep is rotting in a prison cell somewhere,” Alex said. Brady confirmed that Owen had not been seen in 20 years. Owen slipped away.

Alex argued that the police needed to focus on the most likely suspect rather than chase down an old lead. “We gotta explore every possibility,” Brady said. Brady suggested they join the search at the hospital. “I am telling you, Jeremy Horton is our guy. And when I get my hands on him, I swear to you, I’m gonna kill him,” Alex said.

At the hospital, Cat opened the lab for Kayla. They were disappointed to find no one inside. “[Stephanie] just felt so close,” Kayla said. When Steve and Rafe arrived, Rafe suggested that they split up. Steve and Kayla left to search other parts of the hospital while Rafe stayed behind with Cat.

Cat told Rafe that since she had last been in the lab, the layout of the space had changed. Cat showed pictures to Rafe. Rafe agreed that the room had gotten smaller. “You know how much EJ loves his secret doors,” Cat said. Rafe asked Cat to distract EJ so that he could search the lab.

“EJ was responsible last time [Stephanie was kidnapped], him and Owen Kent,” Rafe said. “But we don’t even know if Owen is actually involved,” Cat said. Rafe argued that whether Owen was involved or not, Stephanie’s call came from the hospital. Cat told Rafe that when she had talked to EJ, he had been genuinely concerned about Stephanie.

“There is nothing that is genuine about him. Don’t you know that by now?” Rafe said. Cat argued that she had seen a side of EJ that Rafe had not. Rafe reminded Cat that he had seen the kind of damage that EJ inflicted on people who had gotten in his way. “Trusting him? There will be a cost,” Rafe said. “I’ve heard that a lot. And not just from you,” Cat admitted. Cat argued that her experience told her that EJ had been concerned about Stephanie and that EJ had no reason to kidnap her.

“Regardless of whether or not it has something to do with the kidnapping, EJ is up to something,” Rafe said. WIth a groan, Cat agreed to find EJ and distract him. Cat suggested that Rafe consult the blueprints for the lab in EJ’s office.

In the DiMera living room, EJ told Rolf to clean up all evidence that Stephanie and Jeremy had been in the hospital. “If it means the secrecy of our project will remain intact, then I will see to it that Stephanie Johnson and Jeremy Horton disappear permanently,” Rolf said. “A DiMera’s life is on the line. My father would have agreed that sacrifices such as these must sometimes be made for the greater good,” EJ said. When EJ noted that they needed to hide Lexie, Rolf was adamant that Lexie could not be moved.

Rolf argued that the pod was likely safe behind the fake wall in the lab. EJ countered that because of the 911 call, the police would search the lab again, and they might find the secret space on closer inspection. Rolf agreed, so he ducked into the tunnels to head back to the hospital.

Paulina walked in and informed EJ that the police were searching the hospital again. “Did something prompt this new search?” EJ asked. Paulina told EJ that Stephanie had called 911, and the police had traced the call to the hospital. “How is that even possible?” EJ asked. “You tell me,” Paulina said. EJ played dumb, and he said he had no idea that Stephanie was hidden near the hospital.

“You know as well as I do that what is happening in that lab has nothing to do with Stephanie Johnson. And I resent the implication that I would be part of something so heinous,” EJ growled. Paulina admitted that it seemed more likely that EJ was too focused on his experiment to be involved in a kidnapping. Paulina asked EJ if Rolf would be able to hide the pod from the police. EJ accused Paulina of wanting the cops to find Lexie. Paulina countered that if EJ understood what it was like to love someone, he would know that any loss for a loved one could not be a win.

EJ said that he had compassion for Paulina’s situation, but that he did not see the return of Lexie to the love of her life as a tragic story. “If Abe does leave you, you won’t be alone for long if you don’t want to be,” EJ said. Paulina told EJ that she and Abe loved one another, even if he did leave her for Lexie. “I will not let you trivialize that!” Paulina said. EJ apologized for having been insensitive. Paulina warned EJ that his behavior could only hurt people. EJ thought about his instruction to Rolf to get rid of Stephanie and Jeremy.

As EJ started to leave his house, Cat walked in. Cat told EJ that the police were searching the hospital again and asked EJ if it was a problem. “No, but I think you should be there too, just in case. Come on. We can go together,” EJ said. As EJ turned to leave, Cat cried out, “Wait!” EJ argued that they could not waste time while Stephanie was in danger. “Are you personally responsible?” Cat asked. EJ was stunned that Cat believed he was involved with the kidnapping.

Cat explained that she had not wanted to hold EJ’s past against him after he had taken a chance on her despite her past. Cat said she could not ignore the current chatter. “Are you responsible for Stephanie’s kidnapping?” Cat asked. “Absolutely not,” EJ said. EJ admitted that he did not care what most people thought about him. “But I value your opinion a great deal as an employee and as a friend and perhaps even more than ever,” EJ said. Cat grabbed EJ and kissed him.

As Kayla headed to the hospital chapel, she ran into Brady and Alex. While Brady joined Kayla in the chapel, Alex stayed behind to make a phone call. Alex saw Rafe, and he asked for an update. Rafe had the blueprints, and he asked for Alex’s help.

As Brady and Kayla left the chapel, Steve told them that the police had been showing photos of Owen around town. Steve confirmed that a witness had spotted Owen at the Thunderbird Motel. “He was always alone. But Jada checked it out. He’s been staying there under a false name since the fall,” Steve said. Steve added that Owen had checked out of the hotel that morning. Steve argued that when criminals panicked, they retreated to a familiar place. “I think I know where that might be,” Brady said.

In the lab, Rafe reviewed the blueprints with Alex. Rafe argued that Alex could help him find the secret entrance, but he could not go into the area because Alex was unarmed. Alex grabbed a scalpel. “Fine. But if anyone asks, I told you to stay here,” Rafe muttered. Alex felt around the cabinet, and he found the trigger to open the door to the secret area.

In the storeroom, Jeremy managed to free one hand from the handcuffs by dislocating his thumb. Stephanie argued that Jeremy needed to run for help and leave her behind since they did not have time to free them both. Jeremy refused to leave Stephanie behind. Stephanie told Jeremy to use the two bobby pins in her hair to pick the locks. Jeremy took a bobby pin and Stephanie talked him through unlocking his other handcuff.

When Jeremy reached for Stephanie’s handcuff, she insisted that he unlock the door first. Stephanie talked Jeremy through picking the lock, but the pin broke. Stephanie insisted that Jeremy use her second bobby pin on the door, but Jeremy said he was too worried he would break their last pin. “You’ll have better luck with getting it open than I will,” Jeremy said. Jeremy unlocked Stephanie’s handcuffs.

As Stephanie slowly stood up, she wavered. “You’re shaking,” Jeremy said. Stephanie said she was fine, but she passed out into Jeremy’s arms. “My God, you’re so cold,” Jeremy whispered. Jeremy lowered Stephanie to the floor and wrapped himself around her to keep her warm. “Everything is going to be fine, I promise,” Jeremy said. Down the hall, Rafe told Alex to search one room while he searched the other.

Outside the hospital, Steve noted that the mortuary was across the way. “I don’t know if Owen is going to go there, but that’s where we found him last time,” Brady said. A hooded figure rounded the corner, and Brady recognized Owen. Steve grabbed Owen, and he demanded to know where to find Stephanie.

Paulina arrived at the hospital and asked Kayla if the police had been able to access EJ’s clinic. “It was the first place we looked. Found nothing,” Kayla said. With a shrug, Kayla said EJ had not been hiding anything after all.

Rafe kicked in the door to the secret lab, but no one was there. Rafe looked at the pod. “Dios mio,” Rafe said. Down the hall, Jeremy continued to hold Stephanie’s unconscious body and reassure her. Alex opened the storeroom door and took in the scene. “Stephanie!” Alex yelled.
