In Horton Town Square, Maggie, Sarah, and Holly met for breakfast. The women talked about their restless nights. Sarah, for her part, had been up most of the night because Victoria had a bad cold. The conversation briefly turned to Stephanie’s abduction and Jeremy’s possible involvement. But as Maggie and Sarah expressed concern, Holly was more preoccupied with the toast she was eating.

When Sarah made a comment to Holly, the younger girl apologized and explained that she’d had alternating bouts of nausea and hunger. Sarah gingerly asked Holly if she could be pregnant. Holly loudly refuted the possibility, got overly emotional again, and ran from the table. A startled Maggie confided in Sarah about Holly’s erratic behavior and worried her granddaughter might have returned to drugs. Sarah said Holly wasn’t exhibiting typical signs of drug use and reassured her mom that Holly was likely just experiencing typical college angst.

Sarah’s calm demeanor disintegrated, though, after she departed the table with Victoria. Sarah peered into her daughter’s stroller and noticed with alarm that Victoria was coughing and seemingly had trouble breathing.

At the Brady Pub, Ari arrived at Tate's behest. Since Tate knew that Holly most likely wouldn’t be accepted into the sorority, he had a plan to distract her with romance. The only problem was that he needed Ari and Holly’s room to follow through with his plan. Ari was reluctant and shot down Tate’s suggestion that he use his room instead, which Ari proclaimed smelled like a locker room.

Ari likewise wasn’t thrilled with Tate’s proposal that she spend the night playing video games with Aaron. But Ari admitted the main reason holding her back from helping was Holly’s bitchy behavior toward her. Tate defended his girlfriend and reiterated how sorry and confused Holly had been by her recent actions. Ari softened and agreed to stay at the Hernandez house for the night.

After Ari briefly stepped away, though, Tate got an unexpected surprise when Holly burst through the door in a panic about a possible pregnancy. Holly ranted as Tate tried to get answers, and a returning Ari caught the tail end of the rant. Angered anew, she turned to leave. Holly stopped her and again apologized. Ari delivered the news Holly had been expecting: the sorority had rejected her; Ari informed her friends she’d been accepted, but she planned to turn down the invitation.

Holly, however, urged Ari to accept. She insisted that she was happy for her roommate and that she harbored no ill will. Ari was eventually persuaded and sent a text confirming she would join the sorority. But when Ari left, Holly whirled around to Tate and snapped about Ari’s audacity in accepting the sorority invite. A frustrated Tate redirected Holly’s attention back to the more pressing matter at hand and asked if she would be getting a pregnancy test.

At the hospital, Cat greeted a distracted Gwen, who was thinking about the recent developments with the pod occupant. After Gwen emerged from her fog, Cat asked for an update about Gwen’s quest to reclaim her fortune. Gwen said it was going well and that she had enough to keep her comfortable until Dimitri went to prison. When Cat started questioning Dimitri’s guilt, Gwen got offended and lashed out. Cat backtracked and affirmed that she was still Gwen’s friend and on her side.

Gwen, hackles back down, asked Cat how she was handling Chad’s departure from Salem. Cat claimed it was easier not to run unexpectedly into her ex around town. Gwen believed Cat still carried a torch for Chad and urged her to move on and have some fun, just as Gwen herself had done. At Cat’s teasing, Gwen insisted that things between Xander and her were purely physical pleasure this time.

In EJ’s office, EJ plastered on a welcoming smile when he found Paulina waiting expectantly for him. He didn’t believe Paulina had simply stopped by to talk about Stephanie, though. Paulina willingly admitted she had an ulterior motive for her visit: she wanted to know what EJ was up to in his lab…and she wanted answers at once. Despite EJ’s assurances and protests, Paulina told him in no uncertain terms that she would be sending inspectors to evaluate every inch of the lab.

EJ appeared to acquiesce and took the opportunity to ask Paulina about his grandchildren. Paulina testily reminded EJ that Johnny and Chanel wanted nothing to do with him. She intended to respect their decision.

Later, EJ got a much more welcome visitor in Cat. She commended him on the upgraded reward for information about Stephanie. EJ acknowledged the move had been in part for good public relations. He also wanted Cat’s help with Paulina’s inspectors and asked his assistant to oversee them to ensure they didn’t get in the way of his work.

When Cat agreed to the request, EJ admitted Cat was one of the very few people he trusted. He attributed that trust to his mysterious connection with Cat. He looked forward to spending more time with her to explore that connection.

In Marlena’s office, Xander arrived for his appointment, armed with a bouquet of flowers for Marlena’s return to the hospital. As Xander took his seat, he thanked Marlena for still seeing him despite what he had done to her family. Marlena stressed that successful therapy relied on “consistency.” Xander announced he’d had a “major breakthrough" — he had grown tired of his status quo and proclaimed himself done with all of it. Marlena openly wondered if Xander intended to quit therapy.

Xander reassured Marlena he would continue his work with her and clarified that his revelation involved Sarah. When he’d felt the anger welling up inside him after finding out about his ex and Brady, Xander had realized he needed to stop basing his desire for self-improvement around Sarah. Instead of being the man Sarah wanted him to be, Xander wanted to become “the best version of me.” Marlena asked what that “best version” entailed, and Xander emphasized his desire to be the best father for Victoria.

Xander proudly boasted he’d taken his first steps in moving on from Sarah. As he detailed his recent reconnection with Gwen, Marlena listened in silence. Xander sensed she disapproved, but Marlena corrected that it was not her job to approve or disapprove of Xander’s choice. She challenged him about whether he might be using Gwen as a distraction from fully processing his feelings. Before Xander could answer, he got a call from Sarah that sent him racing to meet her.

Later, Paulina paid Marlena a visit. The friends discussed the situation with Stephanie and then moved on to the happier topics of Eli and Lani’s imminent returns and Johnny and Chanel’s growing family. Paulina groused about EJ and his insistence on inserting himself into said family’s lives.

In the emergency room, Xander encountered Gwen. He hastily explained that Victoria was sick and rushed to Sarah and his little girl. Sarah, still panicked, quickly updated Xander on Victoria’s symptoms. She suspected Victoria might have pneumonia. The worried parents took Victoria to an examining room as Gwen looked on.

Gwen tried to ask about Victoria when Maggie arrived at the hospital. With hostility, Maggie told her the matter was none of Gwen’s business. Gwen made a snarky crack about the “high and mighty Hortons,” wished Victoria well, and stalked off. Paulina and Marlena spotted Maggie, so she filled the women in on Victoria’s condition and that Sarah and Xander were by their daughter’s side.

In Victoria’s hospital room, a doctor confirmed Sarah’s suspicion about pneumonia but said that Victoria should recover following treatment. Sarah chastised herself for not seeing the signs, but the doctor reminded her that pneumonia could develop suddenly. Later, Sarah and Xander played with their laughing daughter, both relieved and grateful she would be okay.
