In Horton Town Square, Leo ran into Gwen and began to regale her with one of his anecdotes. Impatient, she quickly turned the subject to her proposal about tracking down Dimitri. Leo announced he’d made a decision: he wasn’t going to take the assignment. He insisted he was too busy investigating the other DiMera dramas, namely Tony and Kristen’s disappearances. Gwen tried to change Leo’s mind, first by insisting that Leo could set himself apart from the other reporters who would be covering the recent cases, then by needling Leo about his “unresolved feelings” for Dimitri.

Leo reiterated he didn’t need closure. He’d moved on from Dimitri, with someone who was kind and, above all, had made him happy. Leo further stressed he was “madly in love” as he walked away. “For now,” Gwen muttered under her breath.

At the Brady Pub, Sarah struggled for breath as Brady and Roman aided her. “What did you do?” Brady demanded of Rachel. She didn’t respond, except to repeat “oh, no.” The words prompted a panicked Rachel to remember shooting EJ. She said she was sorry and ran from the table toward the door.

Rachel stopped when she saw Javi and his paramedic partner enter the pub and go toward Sarah. The medics gave Sarah some medication and asked what had happened. Brady explained Sarah’s allergy to pistachios. Roman blamed himself for somehow getting the orders mixed up, since Rachel had changed her order to pistachio ice cream. Brady assured Roman he wasn’t at fault and shot a look to Rachel.

Later, at the Hernandez home, Leo met up with Javi and the two talked about their work days. Leo told Javi about his decision not to pursue Dimitri’s whereabouts. Javi was surprised and suggested that Leo might, on some level, fear the case would stir up old feelings. Leo blew off the suggestion with jokes, and Javi called him on it.

Leo grew serious and pledged he was all in with Javi: the man who’d fulfilled his one-time fantasies about paramedics and who had made him happier than he’d ever been in his life. The couple raced to the bedroom to celebrate their happiness.

At the hospital, Kayla told Belle the antibiotics for Marlena’s heart problems appeared to be working. Belle was relieved and asked if Lyme Disease was the certain cause, but Kayla still could not provide a definitive diagnosis because of lab delays. Belle attributed the hold-up to EJ.

Meanwhile, EJ visited Marlena on orders from Susan, who wanted an update on her favorite “gal pal.” Marlena was distracted by the article she had just read on her tablet…about Kristen’s supposed prison escape. EJ insisted he didn’t know his sister’s location. Marlena confronted him about the unintended fallout of their decision to keep the secret about Rachel. Kayla and Belle arrived in the midst of the tense discussion, so Marlena put on a smile and assured the women that EJ was only there on Susan’s behalf.

While Kayla informed Marlena about her prospective transition to oral antibiotics and imminent release from the hospital, EJ and Belle stepped outside. Belle immediately accused EJ of having ulterior motives for visiting Marlena. Before the discussion could escalate into a full-blown argument, Brady and Rachel arrived with Sarah. As Kayla took Sarah to an examining room, Rachel asked if Sarah would be okay. “I don’t know,” Brady admitted.

Rachel spotted EJ at the nurses’ station and rushed to the bathroom. EJ eventually took his leave and returned home to the DiMera mansion, where he came upon Gwen with a drink in hand. She told him the mission with Leo had been a fail. EJ urged her to try again, but Gwen affirmed that she knew Leo, and she knew he had made up his mind.

Gwen attempted to talk down EJ by claiming Leo was too distracted by the other DiMera chaos to focus on the secret lab. EJ fretted more about “the most ambitious project” he’d ever done being compromised. He warned Gwen better be right in her assessment, “or Kristen and Tony won’t be the only ones pulling a disappearing act.”

Back at the hospital, Kayla examined Sarah, who had stabilized. Sarah couldn’t understand how she had ingested the pistachios. Kayla theorized it might be “cross-contamination” but wondered how the usually vigilant Roman hadn’t caught the problem. Kayla said she’d called Maggie and asked Sarah if she wanted to contact anyone else. Following a beat, Sarah responded, “No one.”

Kayla provided Brady with an update about Sarah’s condition and then made her way back to her other patient, with Belle in tow. The women were alarmed to find Marlena wincing in pain. Marlena said she felt like her “heart is beating out of my chest.” After follow-up work, Kayla conceded that the antibiotics hadn’t been as effective as they’d hoped. Marlena would need a temporary pacemaker; Marlena tried to reassure a concerned Belle in the wake of the news.

Back in the waiting area, Brady sat Rachel down and confronted her about the incident with Sarah. He stressed that Rachel had been lucky because Sarah had a severe allergy and could have died. Rachel said she hadn’t intended any harm, but Brady reminded her she’d said the same thing after hurting Alex. He asked his daughter if she’d targeted Sarah because Rachel thought “Daddy was falling in love” with the woman. Rachel claimed she’d been stressed about Grandma Marlena and about her mom; when she’d read about Sarah kidnapping her, it had been the final straw.

Brady apologized for Rachel finding out about the complicated baby switch in the way she had. He wanted Rachel to understand that Sarah “adored” her and asked again why Rachel had lashed out. “Because I’m a bad person,” Rachel tearfully replied. Brady compelled Rachel not to talk that way about herself. “You don’t know everything I’ve done,” Rachel added.

Brady braced himself and asked what else Rachel had done. Rachel confided she’d had a memory. “Mommy didn’t shoot Uncle EJ,” she confessed. “I did.”
