In the square, Javi and Leo visited the Ofrenda display, and Javi left a note for his daughter, Solana. Javi and Leo talked about how it had been a year since they had given up custody of Tesoro, and they agreed that it had been the best time of their lives. When Javi noted that the Ofrenda was to celebrate loved ones instead of grieving them, Leo said that he had no familial connections to celebrate. Javi wished Leo’s father could see the man that he had become. Leo said he did not think his father would be proud of him. Javi kissed Leo.

When Javi said he was glad that they were back together, Leo asked about Gus. Javi admitted that he had not told his ex yet. Javi added that he believed that Gus knew that Javi would go back to Leo, and he admitted that he had known that returning to Leo was inevitable. Leo and Javi retired to Leo’s room, and they made love.

Cat met up with Steve at Black Patch to ask about going to see Dominic’s original birth certificate. Cat explained that EJ had asked her to review and verify the original. Concerned, Steve asked Cat if she was more interested in rebuffing EJ’s advances than reviewing the birth certificate in person. Flustered, Cat said no.

Steve asked if something had happened with EJ. Cat reiterated that she had the situation under control. With a nod, Steve promised to keep Cat up to date while she was overseas, and he urged her to reach out if she needed help.

So Close

In Small Bar, Sydney convinced Philip to take part in a high stakes poker game. Philip thought about his promise to poke around for information about the DiMera counterfeit operation, and he questioned Sydney about her connections to the DiMera gambling world. Sydney promised that the game was above board. As Philip and Sydney started to head for the backroom, Gabi walked in.

When Philip rambled a bit, Gabi demanded to know why Philip was behaving oddly. Sydney agreed. Philip explained that he was upset about his brother, but that Xander should be fine. Gabi asked Philip to join her for dinner, and he agreed. As Sydney started to ask about the poker game, Philip interrupted to say that he would take a raincheck on watching a basketball game together. Sydney realized that Philip did not want to discuss the poker game, and she stopped talking.

After Philip and Gabi moved to a different table, Philip noted that he was glad that Gabi had shown up when she had. Philip did not tell her about the poker game. Gabi teased Philip about his aborted plans with Sydney, and he said he preferred to spend time with Gabi. “Good answer,” Gabi said. On the way home, Gabi and Philip stopped at the Ofrenda. Gabi left something for her sister Arianna.

The Weight of Things

Johnny stood in his living room and stared at the silver cups that EJ had given his children to commemorate their births. Johnny noted that he would maintain DiMera Enterprises as a legacy for his children, but he would do it on his own terms. As Johnny sat down and attempted to meditate, a courier dropped off an envelope at the front door.

Johnny called Sydney and asked her to meet with him. When Sydney arrived at Johnny’s apartment, Sydney congratulated Johnny on Chanel’s cancer-free diagnosis. Sydney asked Johnny if he had told EJ, but Johnny said he did not believe that EJ would care about Chanel’s news. Johnny told Sydney about his conversation with EJ. Sydney was surprised, and she reminded Johnny that EJ often said things he did not mean in the heat of the moment.

Johnny told Sydney that this argument had been different. Sydney encouraged Johnny to give it time. With a shrug, Johnny said he intended to quit the company once he cleaned up the Coriseal situation. Johnny showed Sydney the envelope he had received by courier. After Sydney examined the document, she noted that there were irregularities in the shipping weight, which indicated smuggling.

Johnny said he had had no idea that the company was still involved in smuggling, and he did not know who had sent him the information. Johnny and Sydney agreed that EJ was involved, and Sydney asked for shipping records so that she could investigate further. “This could be a disaster for our company,” Sydney said. “And for our family,” Johnny added.

After Alex dropped off a distraught Joy at the bookstore to calm down, he returned to the cafe to talk to Stephanie about the scene she had made over Joy’s pills. Stephanie said that she refused to play nice with Joy any more. Alex argued that Stephanie’s public accusations against Joy would give Joy more leverage in future negotiations about custody. Stephanie told Alex that she was upset that Alex had believed Joy over his own wife. Alex stressed that he had not said that he had believed Joy’s explanation.

“[You think] that I’m a jealous psycho, and she was telling the truth,” Stephanie complained. Alex said his only concern was to keep the peace until they could revise the custody agreement. Stephanie countered that Joy was already winning the long game against her. Stephanie asked Alex to order Joy to stop lying to him, but Alex argued that he could not directly attack Joy.

Stephanie argued that if they held their tongues and played ball for the year, Joy would still find a reason to keep Stephanie away. Disappointed, Stephanie told Alex that it was clear that he did not understand Joy or the situation. Alex apologized for how the situation had affected their marriage. Stephanie said she had been unable to be silent when she had proof that Joy had been lying.

Alex calmly pointed out that Stephanie could not prove that Joy had lied or faked her recovery. Alex told Stephanie that he did not disagree with her theory, but that he did not want to jump to conclusions. After Alex returned home, he called Stephanie to confirm that the bottle of pills had been prescribed after the nerve conduction test, that none of the pills were missing, and that the bottle was not a refill. Frustrated, Stephanie argued that the truth mattered, regardless of the status of Joy’s recovery.

Stephanie visited Steve, and she asked him to review Joy’s prescriptions. Steve confirmed that there were no prescriptions for muscle relaxers prior to two days previous. Stephanie told Steve what had happened in the square. Steve encouraged Stephanie to let go of her suspicions and move on.
