Upstairs at the Hernandez home, Leo watched as Javi talked to Tesoro in Spanish. When Leo observed that Javi had mentioned “familia,” Javi explained he’d told the little boy that a new family was waiting, and that family was so lucky.

Downstairs, Rafe admitted to Gabi that a part of him had been in denial about Tesoro leaving them. Arianna came through the door and started to say how she needed to be there. Gabi cut her off with a hug. The family was soon joined by Javi, Leo, and Tesoro.

Leo tried to lighten the somber mood by suggesting they all run away with the baby, complete with disguises. He then explained that he coped with pain through “lame anecdotes” and stupid jokes. Gabi approached and shared another hug with both Leo and Javi. Rafe reluctantly advised they should be on their way.

In Belle’s office, the mood was much more upbeat as Johnny and Chanel put the finishing touches on the adoption agreement. Johnny thanked Belle and indicated he’d be willing to pay her despite her pro bono offer. Belle said becoming a new aunt was payment enough. The mood soured slightly when EJ stepped into the office. He claimed he’d come to speak with Belle. Johnny and Chanel cautiously stated they were at the office to finalize Tesoro’s adoption.

EJ brightened at the news and commented that his talk with Amy Choi must have paid off. Chanel wondered if EJ had bribed or threatened the woman, but EJ asserted he’d simply spoken to Mrs. Choi as one parent who had made mistakes to another. Johnny remained brusque and left with Chanel and without further word to his dad. After the couple departed, EJ told Belle he’d wanted to discuss honoring John’s donation to the hospital. Belle accepted EJ’s invitation to say a few words at the event, which would be happening the next day.

EJ turned the subject back to the adoption. He asked if Belle had decided not to press charges against Sophia. When Belle indicated she would not be pursuing charges, EJ surprised his ex by saying that Belle had made the right decision. He understood better than anyone the pain of a parent/child separation.

In Horton Town Square, the Hernandez family and Leo gathered to hand Tesoro off to Johnny and Chanel. When Tesoro got fussy, Javi was readily able to calm the baby. Just as Tesoro settled, Johnny and Chanel approached, and pensive looks were exchanged. Johnny and Chanel broke the ice by extending their gratitude to the entire group and an invitation to see Tesoro any time. Gabi joked that the couple could come to regret that offer.

Rafe spoke for the family and affirmed it had been their privilege to care for Tesoro. Javi and Leo echoed Rafe’s feelings and reiterated how grateful they were that Tesoro would be with such a loving family. Ari offered her babysitting duties and marveled that Tesoro would be her cousin, so he would still be part of the family. Rafe retrieved Tesoro from his stroller and gave the baby to Johnny and Chanel, who wore big smiles as they cradled their new son.

When Rafe mentioned how he’d always considered Johnny family, Johnny returned the sentiment. He then asked Rafe to be the baby’s “honorary grandfather.” A touched Rafe accepted Johnny’s offer. Chanel and Johnny then approached Leo and Javi. The new parents were so grateful that Javi and Leo had given their son the best possible start in life; they could think of no more fitting godparents for the little boy.

Javi and Leo teared up at the gesture. Javi admitted he had hoped Johnny and Chanel might ask. Leo and Javi affirmed it would be their lifelong honor to be Tesoro’s godparents. Leo even joked about buying every book on the subject of godfatherhood. Leo did seem taken aback when the subject of Tesoro’s name arose.

Javi gently reminded Leo that Johnny and Chanel had every right to rename their son. The new parents said they were weighing their options and they would let everyone know when they reached a decision. Javi asked if it would be okay if he continued speaking Spanish to Tesoro, and Johnny and Chanel suggested that the whole family become bilingual. Javi said a final goodbye to his foster son in Spanish and then sadly watched with the rest of the family as Johnny and Chanel left with Tesoro.

Gabi and Ari also took their leave, and Leo immediately began rattling off excuses to visit Tesoro. Javi and Rafe said the new parents needed alone time with their son. While Rafe knew from experience how difficult the parting would be for Javi and Leo, he chose to look on the bright side: they would all still be a part of Tesoro’s life. When Leo and Javi left, they passed EJ, and Leo blew off the other man’s greeting. EJ approached Rafe, pondering Leo’s response.

Rafe explained that Leo and Javi had just said goodbye to Tesoro. EJ tried to express sympathy, but Rafe wasn’t having it. He snarked that EJ should know all about how it feels to part with a son. At least, Rafe coldly added, Tesoro didn’t hate Leo and Javi like Johnny hated his father.

EJ was certain Johnny would come around eventually and even allow him a role in the baby’s life. Rafe gladly informed EJ that the role of paternal grandpa had already been filled…by Rafe himself. EJ vowed Rafe would never be a grandfather to EJ’s grandson.

At the Brady Pub, Gabi and Ari sat down for a meal. Ari mentioned her Halloween had been spent commiserating with Aaron about Tesoro. As Ari sang Aaron’s praises, Gabi noted the way her daughter talked about Aaron and asked if something was going on between Ari and her friend. Ari stressed that Aaron and she were just two people who had bonded over a mutual hard time. Gabi eventually backed off and inquired instead about Ari’s internship at Titan.

Ari said the internship was up in the air after the company turmoil. She readily declined Gabi’s invite to intern at Gabi Chic instead, citing Javi’s “horror stories” about working for Gabi. After light banter about Gabi’s leadership style, Ari grew serious and said she was happy her mom had gotten Gabi Chic back. Mother and daughter affirmed they were proud of each other. They also anticipated Will’s imminent arrival in town for the big gala.

At Johnny and Chanel’s place, Marlena and Paulina decorated the room with celebratory signs. Marlena attributed Chanel and Johnny’s successful adoption in large part to Paulina, who was just happy her daughter had finally fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a mom. Paulina knew the day must be bittersweet for Marlena, since it was also her anniversary date. Marlena couldn’t think of a better way to mark the day than John and her gaining a new great-grandson. Later, Belle joined the festivities and filled Marlena in on EJ’s plans for the gala.

The next arrivals to the small party were the guests of honor: Johnny, Chanel, and Baby T. Hugs and congratulations were exchanged all around. The women gushed over the baby and introduced themselves to him. Johnny and Chanel announced they had chosen a name for their son. He would still be known as “Baby T.” The T would stand for Trey: a nickname of his new moniker, John the Third.

Johnny believed that carrying John’s name had made him a better person, and he hoped the same outcome for his son. Marlena had every confidence the boy would carry on John’s legacy. And she knew John would be so honored. Chanel added that Trey’s middle name would be Paul, after Paulina. The new grandmother was equally touched by the gesture.

Later, Johnny made a call to Trey’s other grandmother, Sami. Following a brief chat, he hung up and declared another piece of good news: Sami would be coming to Salem for the gala and to meet her new grandson. While everyone else smiled, Belle’s expression signaled she didn’t consider the announcement good news at all.

Back at the Hernandez home, Javi and Leo approached Tesoro’s empty crib. Leo suggested they take a personal pampering day for themselves, but Javi’s attention was caught by a pacifier lying in the crib. He picked it up and stared forlornly at it. Leo called the pacifier the baby’s favorite and mentioned taking it to him. Javi realized Leo was looking for an excuse to see Tesoro again and vetoed the idea.

Leo hesitantly broached the painful memories the day had brought for Javi. The other man cried softly and admitted he’d been thinking about his daughter. He was trying to be optimistic and count his blessings, but he was struggling. Leo agreed they were blessed to have each other. He embraced Javi and promised they would get through the challenging times ahead together.
