“Honey, I’m Home”

At the hospital, Brady confronted a disguised Kristen about her plot to kill Johnny. Just as he and Sarah tried to get her out of the room, Rachel woke up and called out to her mom. Kristen rushed to Rachel’s side as the girl unsurely asked if her mom was really there. “Honey, I’m home,” Kristen assured, “and I’m not going anywhere.” At the foot of the bed, Brady subtly indicated to Sarah that she shouldn’t call security just yet.

An emotional Rachel said she couldn’t believe her mom was there. She didn't think she’d ever see Kristen again. Kristen avoided answering when Rachel peppered her with questions about where she’d been. But as Kristen tried to calm her daughter down, Rachel suddenly fell unconscious again and her monitors began beeping. Sarah examined the girl as her panicked parents looked on helplessly.

After Brady and Kristen moved to the waiting area, Kristen let her ex know that she wasn’t going anywhere. Just then, Kristen spotted EJ and hurriedly put on her mask and turned around. EJ approached Brady and asked about Rachel. Brady informed him that Rachel was having complications but that the best doctor he knew was caring for her. Unfazed by the veiled hostility, EJ gave his best to Rachel and walked away…but not before taking a second glance at the “nurse” making a call a short distance away.

Sarah came outside and updated Brady and Kristen on Rachel’s condition: the girl had developed inflammation of the stomach and would need another surgery. After absorbing the news, the parents went back to Rachel’s room and comforted their daughter about her second surgical procedure. Both pledged to Rachel that they would be there when she came out of surgery. Before Sarah took Rachel for prep, Kristen pulled her aside and pleaded with the doctor not to let anyone know she was there. Following a nod of approval from Brady, Sarah agreed to the request.

Kristen’s relief didn’t last long, however, because once Brady was alone with her he tore into Kristen for her “monstrous” crime against her own nephew. Brady regretted contacting Kristen and regretted even more that Rachel had seen her before he could throw Kristen out of the room. He made it clear that once Rachel had undergone surgery, Kristen would leave. Even Marlena agreed that Kristen shouldn’t be anywhere near her daughter, which sent Kristen into a tirade against Marlena. Kristen pushed back and said she wasn’t going anywhere because Rachel wanted her there, and her little girl needed her.

Brady claimed Rachel only wanted her mom because she was scared and sick. Before that, their girl had barely mentioned Kristen. In fact, Rachel had indicated she no longer wanted Kristen in her life. Kristen didn’t believe Brady, until he laid out in stark terms the earlier conversation he’d had with their daughter. Rachel had admitted that bad things always seemed to happen with her mom. She had confided that she didn’t trust Kristen and felt more at peace when her mom wasn’t around.

Kristen teared up at Brady’s harsh words and his declaration that Rachel would be better off without her. She lashed out again at Marlena and at Brady, accusing them both of turning her daughter against her. Kristen also angrily questioned Brady’s parenting abilities, as he had failed to notice for days that Rachel was seriously ill. Brady bitterly retorted that Kristen had no right to throw stones at him when she was the one who kept upending Rachel’s life and disappearing. Before tensions could escalate further, Sarah returned with the news that Rachel was out of surgery and in recovery.

Brady and Kristen put their hostilities aside long enough for Sarah to explain that the surgery had been a success. Combined with stronger antibiotics, she and Kayla had hope that Rachel would be fine. She suggested that Brady take a break while Rachel underwent monitoring, but he refused to leave. Kristen reaffirmed that she wasn’t going anywhere either.

At DiMera Enterprises, George O’Halloran arrived at Johnny’s office and lambasted his boss for blowing up all their plans. Johnny declared that the days of secrecy and cover-ups were over at DiMera. With that vow in mind, Johnny only had one thing to say to George: “You’re fired.” George was outraged and expressed his disbelief that Johnny would turn on such a loyal and long-time employee. Johnny asserted that the lab tech was a manifestation of everything wrong with the company, and he demanded George’s key card.

After O’Halloran stormed out the door, Johnny got a more welcome visitor in Steve. The PI commended Johnny on his efforts to rectify his mistakes and to make things right in the lawsuit against Sarah. Johnny wouldn’t rest until they had firm proof of all the criminal wrongdoing in hand. Steve believed that proof rested in O’Halloran’s personal computer. Johnny surmised the laptop must still be in the lab because the lab tech didn’t have it with him during their earlier heated discussion.

Johnny added that he had access to the lab, and O’Halloran no longer did. But when Johnny later made a call about the contents of the lab, he was distressed to discover that the laptop was nowhere to be found. Steve assessed that a desperate O’Halloran would lead them to the laptop…and to the evidence they needed to take down EJ. Later, he made a call to Kayla and informed her he wouldn’t be home that night. He was going on a stakeout.

“The Devil You Know”

Prior to his chat with Johnny, Steve offered his assistance to another EJ-affiliated Salemite in need: Cat. He met with the ISA analyst in the park and told her he knew about her past – and present – links to the spy agency. Cat started to apologize again for failing to seek the ISA’s help when Clyde was pressuring her into the Abigail scheme, but Steve understood and deemed it all in the past. Shane had filled him in on Cat and her current operation in the hopes he could help.

Cat was grateful for the offer but insisted she had things under control. Steve advised her to rethink that belief. EJ was dangerous, and the situation could spiral at any time. He stressed that if Cat needed anything at any time, he was on-hand to aid.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, EJ officially turned in his hospital credentials to a visibly pleased Kayla. She got in some digs about the hospital finally being free of corruption and scandal. EJ coolly reminded Kayla that the hospital was also facing ten percent staffing cuts and the likely closure of the Horton Free Clinic. Kayla vowed none of those outcomes would happen on her watch. EJ took his leave, but not before needling Kayla about the “devil you know” being better than the alternative.

Later, at the DiMera mansion, EJ received a visit from Cat. She had information about Dominic Marino. As EJ listened with interest, Cat told him about Marino pulling out of the sale of the Kiriakis mansion due to a failed inspection. EJ was surprised about the inspection and even more suspicious about why a billionaire like Marino would let a few repairs deter him from securing the estate. He believed Marino was playing games with all of them.

Cat offered to dig deeper into the non-sale, but EJ wanted to focus on the birth certificate. He had to know if the man was truly his brother. Cat agreed to help him with the endeavor, until he suggested the best way was to get a copy of the birth certificate from Marlena. EJ insinuated Cat should deceive Marlena into a meeting and then leverage her previous password access as Marlena’s assistant to secretly go through the doctor’s records. Cat expressed hesitation about betraying Marlena’s trust.

EJ played up his own issues with trust. He was a man who “made things happen" and didn’t wait around for things to happen to him. He needed control back. After another moment’s pause, Cat agreed to the plan. EJ thanked her with a passionate kiss and seductively suggested they take things upstairs.

Cat took EJ’s hand and let him lead the way. The couple’s trek was interrupted, though, by George O’Halloran’s abrupt arrival. EJ quickly composed himself and asked Cat for a moment with his employee. She complied and left the two alone. EJ’s barely contained rage came out and he blasted the man for his continued carelessness.

George’s admission that his laptop contained documentation of all their crimes only increased EJ’s ire. The lab tech laid all their problems at the feet of “nepo baby” Johnny. EJ said it didn’t matter, and what was done was done. George’s incompetence had ultimately led to people’s deaths and to all the current strife. If anyone was going down, it would be O’Halloran and O’Halloran alone.

Who will win the race for the laptop of doom? Is Cat playing with fire? And should Kristen stay away from her daughter? Sound off in the comments.
