At the Kiriakis mansion, Alex dropped by to visit with Kelsey. Maggie greeted him, and the two had a fond exchange in which Alex affirmed that the family hadn’t been the same with Maggie out of town. He thanked Maggie for hosting Joy and Kelsey. She said there was plenty of room, and mother and daughter were welcome for as long as they wanted. Alex and Maggie also looked forward to getting Titan back into fighting form.

Upstairs, Joy got up from her wheelchair and comforted Kelsey, assuring the little girl that the status quo would only remain until Joy had accomplished her goal of bringing their family together. She heard commotion at the door and quickly slipped back into her seat, just as Philip entered the room. He came bearing a package of muscle relaxants that had been delivered to the Brady Pub. Philip quizzed Joy on why she had the pills, if they were safe for her, and why she hadn’t gotten them from the Salem hospital staff instead of her dad…whom he presumed still didn’t know about Joy’s condition. Joy was able to provide excuses for all Philip’s inquiries and acted offended that he was giving her the third degree.

Philip apologized and said he was only looking out for Joy’s well-being. The talk turned to Joy’s new living accommodations. Philip jokingly warned Joy to watch out for the black mold, then admitted it was only paint. He elaborated on the family’s plans to save the mansion and defended that sometimes one had to take extreme measures to do what was best. Joy concurred.

When Kelsey began crying, Joy urged Philip to soothe her by patting the little girl on the back. Philip awkwardly complied and admitted he didn’t have much experience with babies. The comment prompted Joy to ask him if he wanted to become a dad one day. Philip had given it thought, and he confided that he’d once believed he would have a family with Joy’s sister Chloe.

Later, after Philip left, Alex visited with Joy and Kelsey. Joy gushed about the luxurious living accommodations and thanked Alex for setting it up. Alex relayed Maggie’s offer for Joy to stay indefinitely. Joy indicated her enthusiasm for the proposition. Once Alex departed, though, she worried that Philip would inadvertently spread the news about her muscle relaxants.

Detective Little Sweetness

At the hospital, Stephanie informed Kayla that her PR firm had been the latest victim of the hospital’s budget cuts. She regretted not working with Kayla anymore and not having her mom readily on-hand for advice. Kayla pledged that she would always be available to lend Stephanie a listening ear. Stephanie readily took her mom up on the invitation and again brought up the possibility of Joy faking her paralysis. Kayla began to assert that Joy’s condition appeared medically legitimate, but Stephanie suggested her rival could be messing with the test results.

Stephanie pitched her theory that Joy had been using a pharmaceutical aid, like muscle relaxants, to dampen her reflexes. She reminded Kayla that Joy did have a background in acting. Stephanie then asked her mom to help her discover once and for all if Joy was lying. If Kayla could find a way to conduct a reflex test with no advance notice to Joy, then Joy could very likely give herself away. Kayla reluctantly agreed…with a stern warning to Stephanie about the repercussions and the hurt feelings if Stephanie was wrong; she advised her daughter to limit the number of people with whom she shared the suspicions.

Later, in Horton Town Square, Stephanie ran into Philip and sat down for a catch-up chat with her friend. Stephanie confessed she’d lost her PR job at the hospital, which prompted Philip to offer her a job at Titan. Stephanie declined, since she was also working with Titan’s competitor, DiMera Enterprises. She noticed Philip seemed distracted, and Philip admitted he was thinking about his prior interaction with Joy: he couldn’t understand why the woman was still keeping the truth from her family. Stephanie snarked that Joy was a master of deception, given her history in hiding Kelsey from Alex.

The Battle of Sami’s Men

At the Salem Inn, Dante ended a flirtatious phone call with Sami and headed for the door. He was met on the other end by EJ, who wanted to finish their talk. EJ invited himself inside before Dante could object. Sami’s ex then immediately questioned what Dante’s intentions were with Sami and with his daughter. If he hurt Sami…

Dante cut off the warning and declared EJ had no right to defend Sami’s honor after what he’d done to her. And as far as Sydney was concerned, she had been better off because EJ had assumed the role of “absentee father.” EJ bristled and affirmed he loved and doted on his daughter. Dante retorted that he loved and cared for Sydney, too, and he deeply loved her mother. EJ considered it no mere coincidence that Dante and Dominic Marino had been roommates.

Dante insisted he had no idea of Dominic's possible connection to Sami’s family. Dominic had never wanted to talk about his family, and Dante had respected his friend's privacy. EJ wasn’t buying it and called Dante a liar. During the argument, Dante did let it slip that Dominic’s parents lived in America, but he hadn’t seemed close to them. Dominic had never visited them, and neither had they ever visited Dominic.

During boarding school, the family had always sent a woman who worked for them to look after Dominic. The mention of the woman piqued EJ’s curiosity, especially after Dante confirmed the woman’s name began with an “R.” EJ described Rita to Dante – a woman with “round glasses and a constantly sour expression” – and Dante said the description matched the woman. Dante had his doubts when EJ mused that a woman named Rita worked for the DiMeras, and he said as much.

Dante went on to defend his friend and Dominic’s intentions. EJ pressed Dante more about his seemingly close association with a man he claimed not to know that well. Dante had enough and not-so-subtly ordered EJ out of the room. EJ did take his leave, and the men sized each other up as he departed.

A Mother’s Vow

In Rachel’s hospital room, Kristen woke with a start and panicked when she saw her daughter’s empty bed. Brady explained that Sarah had taken Rachel for a routine scan. Kristen began to insult Sarah for failing to inform her, but Brady harshly shut her down and reminded Kristen she should be thanking the doctor for the help she had given Rachel and for the cover she had provided Rachel’s mom. Kristen said she was grateful to be there for her little girl.

Brady reiterated that Kristen needed to leave after Rachel regained consciousness. To his surprise, Kristen didn’t fight him on it. She tearfully admitted that Brady’s disclosure about what Rachel had confided had made her realize that maybe Rachel would be better off if she went away…at least for a while. Kristen opened up about the regret she felt and how she couldn’t understand why she did the horrible things she did. Brady listened and said that Kristen needed intensive help – whether it be medication, therapy, or both – before she could be the mother their daughter needed.

Kristen took hope from Brady’s words that he wasn’t permanently cutting her out of Rachel’s life. Although a part of Brady believed Johnny and Amy Choi deserved justice, he knew Kristen’s incarceration would only devastate their daughter more. Kristen implored Brady to see the good remaining in her, as he knew her better than anyone and understood that although she did monstrous things, she wasn’t a monster. She promised him that she posed no threat to anyone in town, and she pledged she would get the help she desperately needed, for Rachel’s sake.

Later, Kristen sat vigil by Rachel’s bedside until her daughter roused. Rachel was joyous her mom hadn’t left. Tearing up again, Kristen explained to Rachel that she had to go away because she had done something bad that she deeply regretted. Rachel immediately guessed that Kristen’s bad thing could send her back to jail. Kristen lauded her daughter’s smarts and her bravery.

Rachel had done the hard work to get better emotionally, and Kristen confided that she would follow her daughter’s courageous example. Rachel cried but understood. Kristen promised she would be back one day. Mother and daughter embraced and affirmed their love for each other. In the background, Brady looked on, tears in his eyes.

Will Kristen make it out of Salem before someone catches her? Will Stephanie and Kayla catch Joy in the act? And will Sami’s family catch a clue about Dante’s true intentions? Sound off in the comments.
