In today’s Days of our Lives recap for September 14, 2026, Philip hoped for a huge payday, Dante Vitali made a grand entrance, Julie helped a friend in need, and Belle and Chad’s quest led to a puzzling new find.
Queen’s Gambit
At Marlena’s place, Marlena called granddaughter Sydney, who unbeknownst to Marlena was busy primping for her poker game in Monte Carlo. Marlena mentioned that Sydney’s aunt, Belle, would like to visit with her while Belle was in Italy. Sydney complained about none of her family, including her father, informing her of their imminent arrivals. She told Marlena she couldn’t make it and sarcastically lamented “missing all the fun.”
Following the call, Marlena got emotional as she looked at a photograph of John. Julie arrived, with doughnuts in hand, and immediately went to her friend’s side. Marlena admitted the loneliness of being in the home alone at night (in Belle’s absence) for one of the first times since John’s passing. Julie comforted her fellow widow with a quote from Maya Angelou and an assurance that Marlena would never truly be alone because she was surrounded by love.
Marlena also confided that she was worried about Belle. The comment confused Julie, since she’d assumed Belle had only gone on a trip with Chad. Marlena filled Julie in on the chess set mystery, EJ’s unwelcome addition to the trip, and about the hazy memories she’d been experiencing since the mystery had begun. She still wasn’t certain what it all meant, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to know. Marlena worried she’d never be rid of Stefano’s power over her life. Julie advised Marlena to put the machinations of the attention-seeking “old villain” behind her once and for all.
Dead Man’s Hand
At the estate of Dominic Marino, Belle wondered if the plan to trespass on the reclusive billionaire’s property was a good idea. Chad lightly reasoned that they weren’t really trespassing, and he called out for Marino to prove his point. When no one responded, Chad surmised that their mystery clue-giver had wanted them to search the premises while Marino wasn’t there. With that justification in mind, the duo entered the main room of the house.
Belle gasped when she saw a chess set just like the one Stefano had gifted Marlena prominently displayed in the room’s center. Chad and she approached the set with some hesitation, and they noted that this particular set still had all its pawns. Before the investigation could proceed much further, the couple tensed as they heard footsteps approaching, along with the door opening. Both were relieved but none-too-happy to see EJ strolling inside. “What are you doing here?” was exchanged all around.
EJ claimed he’d wanted to confront Marino about the buyout of the Kiriakis mansion. The man was basically a “ghost” and didn’t even have an available photograph online. EJ needed to know Marino's true intentions for setting up shop in Salem. Chad and Belle countered that their chess set clues had led them to Marino’s doorstep. EJ believed it all had to be connected and that Stefano had been behind it all.
EJ further theorized that Marino had some sort of personal connection to Stefano, to the Kiriakis family, or to both. A quick scouring of the premises seemed to confirm EJ’s theory. He observed that several items were associated with his father, including Stefano’s favorite liquor. Most startling of all, EJ discovered a box of cigars that Stefano always had specially imported. The cigars were no longer even in production.
Belle turned her attention to the chess set. She excitedly reminded Chad that the other chess set had a hidden compartment, which meant their current one likely did as well. Chad hit paydirt and found a secret drawer. He rebuffed Belle’s offer to open it, opting to do it himself for her safety. The mystery only deepened after Chad pulled out an old photograph – dated 1992 – of Stefano with a young boy.
EJ openly wondered if the boy could be Dominic Marino. Meanwhile, the mystery watcher, who sported EJ’s ring and Stefano’s cigars, spied on Chad, Belle, and EJ from a surveillance screen.
High Stakes Hold ‘Em
In Monte Carlo, poker game host Dante Vitali arrived and introduced himself to a dressed-to-the-nines Philip and Gabi. Dante complimented Gabi on her success with Gabi Chic. Sydney soon joined the proceedings, and Dante warned the new arrivals about his soon-to-be stepdaughter's card shark status. Sydney told Dante she already knew Philip and Gabi, her niece’s mom. She snarked about Salem being “low-key incestuous” with the family ties.
Things got tense temporarily after Dante brought up Philip and Gabi’s “engagement” and Sydney’s assertion that the couple didn’t want anyone to know about said engagement or their excursion to Monte Carlo. Dante insisted he wouldn’t keep anything from Sami. Gabi smoothed things over by trying to empathize with Dante. She understood his reservations, but she reasoned that she didn’t need to know Philip’s every move, especially if it didn’t concern her. She guessed the same was true with Dante and Sami; the pitch seemed to satisfy Dante.
Later, Dante made introductions between Philip, Gabi, and the other major player at the table, Otto Karroll. With introductions made, the Texas Hold ‘Em game commenced. Philip and Sydney both seemed to do well early on, which prompted Philip to inquire how Sydney had become such a shark at the game. Sydney bluntly replied that while her Nonno had been teaching Johnny and Theo chess, her grandpa Roman had taught her how to dominate at poker. She’d used those skills to fleece some snooty rich girls at her school out of a fortune.
The atmosphere grew tense again when the subject of Ava arose. Dante said he’d never been close with his cousin. Philip bristled and waved it off when Dante asked about Philip’s prior association with the woman. But after Gabi made her dislike clear and called Ava “bonkers,” Dante became angry and warned Gabi to back off because he was all about family loyalty. Taken aback, Gabi complied.
As the game proceeded, Sydney and Philip’s luck took a turn for the worse, with several folded hands. Dante wise-cracked that his “shark” was turning into a baby fish, but Sydney insisted it wasn’t over yet. In the game’s final hand, Otto made a big wager, which Philip couldn’t match. But as Otto moved to grab all his chips and declare victory, Gabi had a realization which she quickly verbalized: Otto had been cheating by marking the ace cards. The man balked…until Dante took the cards, gave them a close appraisal, and confirmed Gabi’s suspicions.
An irate Dante ordered Otto from the table, with a promise he’d “deal” with the man later. He thanked Gabi for exposing the cheating and offered to extend the game for two more hands, winner take all. Philip readily accepted the invitation. This time, the final hand ended in a showdown between Dante and Philip. As the participants watched in anticipation, Dante turned over the remaining cards.
With a smirk, Sydney announced Dante had a four-of-a-kind. With a poker face, Philip flipped over his cards, revealing a straight flush. Philip had bested Dante and won the game and – more importantly – the prize. An over-the-moon Gabi gave him a celebratory kiss. The high of victory didn’t last long, however. Later, Philip counted out the money and mournfully declared to Gabi that it still wasn’t enough to save Titan.

Meanwhile, Dante paid a visit to the still-unseen Dominic Marino. Everything had gone according to plan. Dante hadn’t even been forced to “bust” Otto because Gabi had done the deed for him. And without Otto’s money in the pot, Philip had come up short, just as intended. “Well played, Dom,” Dante said with a smile.
