Days Recap: Days of our Lives Recap September 16: Johnny's Confession Leads Theo to Make a Life-Changing Choice

In today’s Days of our Lives recap for September 16, 2026, Johnny’s confession had a caveat, Alex and Stephanie hit another roadblock, and Sarah and her men put their heads together.

Big Pharma, Big Fail

At DiMera Enterprises, Theo confronted Johnny about taking a meeting with George O’Halloran behind his back. Johnny played dumb at first, until Theo informed his co-CEO that he’d just seen the head of DiMera Pharma leaving their office. Theo implored Johnny to stop lying to him. Caught, Johnny fessed up about the anonymous complaint that had been made about a supposedly contaminated batch of Coriseal. But he stopped short of revealing he’d already known about the crisis for weeks.

Theo was horrified and asked Johnny point-blank if people had died because of the company…and because of EJ. Johnny only insisted that the accusation hadn’t been proven. Theo hoped it wasn’t true, but he let Johnny know in no uncertain terms that the authorities would have DiMera’s full cooperation; if wrongdoing was uncovered, they would face the consequences truthfully. Before Johnny left, he told Theo he was glad they had cleared the air. Once alone, though, Theo began writing a letter of resignation.

State of Paralysis

At Alex and Stephanie’s apartment, Stephanie answered a request from Alex to meet for a talk. Alex braced himself to tell Stephanie about Joy’s condition, but Stephanie quickly guessed from his demeanor that the other woman was paralyzed. Alex relayed the doctors’ hopes that the condition was temporary and apologized for the toll the ongoing turmoil was taking on Stephanie. When Alex tried to take his wife’s hand, Stephanie pulled it away. She flatly rejected his attempts to reassure her, declared their lives wouldn’t be the same again and that she was bottom of his list of priorities, and stormed out.

Meanwhile, at the Brady Pub, Kayla updated Steve on their newest babysitting stint with Kelsey. Alex had wanted to talk with Stephanie in private, and Kayla hoped the conversation would go well. She told Steve about Joy’s prognosis, and both agreed it would put further strain on their daughter’s marriage. Kayla delivered more bad news: Gwen’s bid for the hospital had been rejected, so the future of the Salem institution was once again in limbo.

Later, Stephanie entered the pub, saw Kayla with Kelsey, and prepared to leave. Sarah and Xander, who were at a nearby table, offered to watch the little girl while Stephanie stepped outside with Kayla. Outside the pub, Stephanie vented her frustrations to Kayla about Alex getting Joy pregnant, her own reckless actions with the gun, and about how she was making a potentially life-altering circumstance for Joy about her. Kayla listened and reminded her daughter that Stephanie could have room in her heart for both anger and sympathy. The conversation took a turn, however, when Stephanie openly pondered if Joy could be faking her paralysis.

Kayla made it clear she couldn’t divulge details about Joy’s prognosis. She did stress to Stephanie that faking the lack of an involuntary spinal reflex was highly improbable, if not impossible. Stephanie backed off the idea and regretted even suggesting it. Kayla offered motherly understanding and comfort.

Prior to their impromptu babysitting duties, Xander and Sarah continued their confab with Brady about the Coriseal case. Brady took a call from Belle, who filled him in on the latest from Italy, including the search of Dominic Marino’s property. Brady’s mention of Marino's name during the call quickly caught Xander’s attention. He told Sarah that Marino was the same man who wanted to buy the Kiriakis estate.

When Brady rejoined the conversation, he relayed what Belle had said. Brady, Xander, and Sarah found the apparent link between the mystery man and Stefano odd and noteworthy. They were further puzzled because Stefano could not have possibly known at the time of his death that the Kiriakis estate would be up for grabs. Brady suggested it was an unknown association with Stefano that had compelled Marino to make a move on the estate. All three agreed they needed to discover the complicated connection between the billionaire, the DiMeras, and the Kiriakises.

Brady spotted Steve outside and departed to loop his partner into the investigation. Later, while babysitting Kelsey, Sarah admitted that Joy’s condition reminded her of when she had endured the same prognosis and uncertainty. She thanked Xander for being such a strong source of love and support for her during that time. Xander replied with sincerity that although he regretted many things in his life, the two things he would never regret were his love for Sarah and the product of that love, Victoria.

Meanwhile, in Horton Town Square, Brady sat Steve down for an update on all things Dominic Marino. Steve had already done some legwork and had found no criminal history, no social media presence, and very little information on the man. He apparently rarely even left his private island. Brady declared the trail cold, but Steve offered a sliver of hope they hadn’t entirely hit a dead end. Although most of Marino's transactions had been made through shell companies, the Kiriakis purchase had not, which made the PIs theorize that Marino had wanted people to know his identity.

Later, back at the pub, Brady reconvened with Xander and Sarah. In light of the new information, Brady asked if Xander still wanted to go through with the sale to Marino. Xander said he’d have to talk it over with Maggie. Who was the lesser of two evils: the devil they knew in EJ…or the devil they didn’t?

Highs and Lows

At Chanel and Johnny’s place, Chanel awoke to find Lani watching over the kids. She thought that Johnny should have awakened her, since the side effects of the chemo appeared to be easing. But just as Chanel made that proclamation, a wave of nausea hit her. Lani smiled, claimed she had something that could help, and retreated to the kitchen. She reemerged with a plate of brownies. Chanel grinned when she realized exactly what kind of brownies her sister had made.

Lani explained that Paulina had told her about the medical marijuana and how Chanel hadn’t felt up to making the pot brownies herself. Chanel thanked Lani and started munching on a brownie. The sisters chatted about Lani’s recent takedown of a mugger, which impressed Chanel. Lani confided that she missed being a cop, but she didn’t regret the circumstances that had led to her leaving the force: protecting Paulina. Chanel accepted Lani’s invitation to take a short walk alone around the block before the effect of the brownies fully kicked in.

Later, during her stroll through Horton Town Square, Chanel ran into Alex. The friends sat on a bench for a brief catch-up session. After Chanel said she was doing well, Alex opened up about the situation with Joy and Stephanie. Despite her dislike of Joy, Chanel had sympathy for her former rival’s predicament. But she also had sympathy for the toll the drama was taking on Alex and Stephanie.

Chanel decided to cheer Alex up by breaking into an off-key rendition of “Itsy-Bitsy Spider.” She dissolved into giggles and admitted to Alex she was high. Chanel’s antics did manage to get a laugh out of Alex. As the friends enjoyed their moment of levity, Stephanie saw the light-hearted interaction and sadly walked away.

Later, Chanel returned home and found Johnny in the midst of a tense conversation with Lani, who had called her brother-in-law out on keeping something from Chanel. Neither Johnny nor Lani divulged the nature of their conversation to a blissfully unaware Chanel, and Lani left. Chanel did observe that Johnny looked sad. Johnny put on a smile, said he was fine, and let Chanel distract him with a make-out session on the couch.

Meanwhile, while Alex went to pick his daughter up from Steve and Kayla, Stephanie found herself at Small Bar. Theo, already drowning his own sorrows, asked her to join him. The burgeoning friends commiserated. Theo had just quit his job. He declared the outcome inevitable, which seemed to give Stephanie pause.

Stephanie confessed she’d had another major fight with Alex. She wasn’t sure where they stood or would stand down the road. Theo commented on the irony that when Stephanie fell, he was always the one to catch her.
