Leave It to Joy

At the hospital, Alex brought Kelsey for a visit with Joy. He updated his baby mama on Kelsey’s ear infection, which had a positive prognosis. Joy thanked Alex for the company, as she was going stir-crazy and had been relegated to watching old fifties sitcoms on the outdated hospital TV. Philip arrived soon thereafter and relieved Alex. Joy was clearly disappointed when he left, which didn’t go unnoticed by Philip.

Philip confronted Joy about her failure to tell her parents or Chloe about her surgery. Joy defended that she was only trying to keep Craig and Nancy from going all helicopter parent and smothering her. Besides, Chloe was on tour and couldn’t be around anyway. Philip wasn’t buying the excuses. He accused Joy of using the situation to keep Alex close by and Stephanie away. The accusations angered Joy, and she ordered Philip out of her room.

After he left, Joy turned on one of the sitcoms and launched into a black-and-white fantasy featuring her, Alex, and Stephanie as the main characters. The plot began with Stephanie married to Alex and their neighbor Joy stuck in a marriage with an unnamed man who had abandoned her. But by the second act, the tables had turned and it was Joy who had just married Alex…after they had bonded when he had changed her spare tire. In the fantasy, Joy and Alex happily raised Kelsey, and Joy got the opportunity to slam the door in Stephanie’s face and effectively shut her out of their happy little family. Joy smiled as the fantasy concluded with just that image.

Later, Joy received a call from Justin requesting an update on the custody papers. Joy said she hadn’t signed them yet, ended the call, and sighed. If only she was married to Alex, she wouldn’t even need to worry about custody papers. With that thought in mind, Joy made a call to Melinda Trask.

Nondue Date

On his way out of Joy’s room, Alex ran into Steve, and the men talked about the challenges of dealing with first ear infections as fathers. Steve offered to babysit the little girl so Alex could spend some quality time with Stephanie. Alex protested at first, but Steve eventually convinced him. When Stephanie approached, Alex and Steve informed her of the plan. Stephanie thanked her papa and gladly took Alex’s hand as he led her away. Steve chatted with Kelsey about the fun they’d have together, and he hoped his daughter and son-in-law would have a great time as well.

Meanwhile, Alex took Stephanie to the park for an impromptu picnic before their scheduled couples’ massage. He explained that since they couldn’t go to the fondue restaurant and since open flames weren’t allowed in the park, they’d have a “nondue date” instead. Stephanie loved the idea, and the couple settled down to enjoy the food spread. Stephanie assured Alex she completely understood his desire to be there for his daughter. Alex acknowledged Stephanie’s concern that Joy would continue to make things difficult, and he vowed he would find a solution.

Alex had no intention of letting Joy cut Stephanie completely out of Kelsey’s life. He wouldn’t continue being forced to choose between his wife and his daughter. As the date proceeded, things heated up, and Stephanie suggested they take the date to a more private setting. Alex readily obliged.

A Side Helping of Drama

At Brady’s place, Sarah lightly apologized to Brady for Victoria’s takeover of his office space. Brady said it was fine and that he loved having Sarah and Victoria staying with the family. The talk turned to the daddy-daughter dance that would be happening later in the day. Sarah intended to go so she could take pictures of Victoria, but she didn’t want to intrude on Brady and Rachel’s experience. Brady offered another reassurance and claimed Rachel would love having Sarah there.

The mood took a temporary downturn when Sarah got word of Holly’s near-mugging at knifepoint. She was alarmed and briefly wondered if EJ could have sent someone after Holly. But Sarah wanted to focus on the positives of the day and, with that, she shared a kiss with Brady and left to meet with Xander and Victoria.

Later, Brady saw Philip at the Brady Pub, and uncle and nephew sat down for a chat. Philip filled Brady in on his tense visit with Joy. He was worried about her. Brady said he would pay a visit to Chloe’s sister and offer his help. When Brady mentioned the dance and Sarah’s plans to attend, Philip openly pondered how Xander would react to seeing Brady and Sarah together at the event.

Brady said Xander had accepted the relationship, but Philip’s hesitant response put him on alert. Philip “confessed” he’d spotted Xander and Sarah in a near-clinch after he’d “rescued” them from the wine cellar. Brady wanted more details. Philip eventually conceded that he could have misinterpreted the situation. But he had seemingly succeeded in his mission to get Brady’s wheels turning.

Mini Mozart

In Horton Town Square, Xander and Victoria finished up their birthday shopping spree. Victoria demonstrated her prowess on the bongo drums Xander had bought for her. The little girl soon traded the drums for a keyboard piano she spotted set up in the square. After a quick peek to ensure no one would scold them, Xander settled his daughter on the bench. When she began playing, he could only stand back in wonder.

Alex and Stephanie strolled by and remarked on Victoria’s talent. She must’ve had lots of piano lessons. "None," Xander responded, still in awe. Xander marveled to the couple about how his perspective on fatherhood had completely been changed by Victoria.

Later, Victoria ran into Sarah’s arms when she caught sight of her mom. She then gave her parents another surprise by approaching the pianist who had taken over the keyboard and requesting a song. As Victoria began singing to her parents, both Xander and Sarah gazed at her with adoration, exchanging loving glances with each other. After the song ended, Xander asked where Victoria had learned it. From mommy, Victoria attested before skipping off.

Sarah admitted she sang the song to Victoria every night, but she had no idea her daughter had memorized all the words. Xander was wistful about sharing special moments of joy with Sarah when their daughter did something remarkable. He regretted those times would be more fleeting since they wouldn’t be living together anymore.

Sarah seemed moved by Xander’s words. As the two gazed at each other, Victoria reapproached and took both their hands. Together, the family departed to get ready for the dance.

Will Victoria add dancing virtuoso to her list of musical talents? Will Joy’s fantasy life turn from dark comedy to horror show? And has Philip brought out Brady’s inner Kiriakis? Sound off in the comments.
