A long time ago and in some tunnels not too far away, Days of our Lives' Rafe and Hope dragged Stefano DiMera's allegedly dead body beneath the DiMera mansion and hoped to never look back. A lot has happened since then, including a prison stint for Hope, some vague information "proving" Stefano was alive (which set Hope free), and a whole new generation of DiMeras taking over, including some presumed dead and never-before-heard-of members of the clan.
But now, it seems the Phoenix will rise no more. Kristen dug deep and found his bones and now we are going to dig deep into the week that was in Salem.
Mourning has broken on Days of our Lives...

Stefano DiMera began dying in 1983 when his daughter, Renee, visited him in prison and he appeared to have a stroke right in front of her. That is when the Phoenix was officially born. Until then, soap operas did not have a character who rose from the dead again...and again...and again...and again. Sure, presumed-dead characters have miraculously risen from the dead since the dawn of daytime, but that feat had typically been performed just once until the 1980s. Days of our Lives and Stefano DiMera turned it into an art form, and nobody has matched him since.
In fact, DAYS has cornered the market on fancy resurrections, all thanks to Stefano's trusty mad scientist, Dr. Wilhelm Rolf. The number of DiMeras (and others) whom Rolf has brought back to life feels endless. He's even about to bring another of Stefano's offspring back, and we have a feeling we know who she is (yes, she)...
However, this week we finally got confirmation that Stefano is really, most sincerely dead like that Wicked Old Witch of the East, so ding-dong? Well, Salem isn't celebrating like Munchkinland, despite the terror he wrought on the town for decades. Instead, characters are...mourning the man. A man they have mourned so many times before, who they already thought could be dead, and who they haven't even seen or heard from over the last decade. You'd think this wouldn't be a big deal, but apparently, it is. And all we can do is scratch our heads.
Why is Salem mourning this man who has been dead for all intents and storyline purposes for so long? Why were so many long pauses before commercial breaks wasted on this? Why are we having a funeral in the coming days? Please let this be the moment when Stefano DiMera, with all his evil faults and imperfections, can finally rest in peace. The constant threat to resurrect the character over and over again has been disrespectful to the great man who played him, Joseph Mascolo. The only thing we can hope for during this upcoming funeral week is mountains of flashbacks from Stefano's best moments.
The next generation...

As Johnny spread the news about Stefano, he forgot to spread the news about the healthy baby that he and Chanel are expecting, which struck us as rather odd. But that baby will be a DiMera, as is Trey, which Johnny will point out to EJ this coming week.
Too bad it looks like Trey's status as a DiMera is about to run into some big trouble. Bayview clearly hasn't done anything for Sophia except make her more vengeful and unhinged than ever before. This out-there teen is now blackmailing the adults in the room and will very likely find a way to kidnap Trey sometime soon with the help of an unwitting DiMera. Poor Rachel just wants a friend, and Sophia seems to fit the bill.
But for all her faults (and there are many), Sophia continues to fascinate us. We needed a new young unhinged vixen and we got her in Holly's childhood BFF. Now, if we can just get her mother back, we'd be happy. Why is Amy not visiting her "precious girl"? DAYS gave us this hilariously ridiculous helicopter mom and then took her away and that's not fair.
Whether Amy is there or not, Johnny and Chanel had better watch their backs, because one day they are going to look into Trey's stroller parked in their living room with their invisible baby and they won't see him because Sophia will have him.
Alex and Stephanie...we're just not that into you

Ok, we'll finally admit it because we gave it enough time, but Alex and Stephanie? Yeah, they just don't work. We can't put our finger on it, but there is something missing between them. Everything about this couple seems surface and superficial. And now they are just wholly ridiculous. They have essentially been on a witch hunt for Jeremy Horton for months, when he hasn't even approached Stephanie since that day he showed up at the front door with flowers.
Watching them obsess over catching Jeremy in the act is maddening. Even the evidence they have against him seems way too manufactured and if we had the Black part of Black Patch working on this case, maybe Mike Horton's and Robin Jacobs' son wouldn't be the main suspect.
We can't wait for this story to end, but at least it tells us one thing: Alex and Stephanie are so NOT the next Jarlena, Stayla, Bope, or anyone even close.
Jennifer, are you serious?

At least Jennifer Rose's ridiculous and cruel custody fight for Chad's kids is finally over, but Chad and Jennifer's debrief about the whole thing after Justin and Melinda left had us wanting to throw things at the screen.
Did Jennifer really say that she and Jack would not interfere with Chad's decisions when raising his children? Um, was that whole custody nonsense not over Chad's decisions while raising his children? Did she even hear herself? If Chad had been enjoying a beverage during that moment, we wouldn't have been surprised if he did a spit take. We assume Jack and Jennifer will be heading back to Boston now. When Jack returns, can he bring the real Jennifer with him and not this pod version?
Speaking of pods...

So, who really is in that DiMera pod after all? Don't we all want to know? Well, Rolf is about to resurrect someone any day now and it's like a party with everyone ready and waiting. We have the DiMeras, the Alamains, the Von Leuchners, oh my. It's like a trip back to the 80s and 90s, so let's go...
Till next week, Scoopers, when Stefano DiMera is finally, finally, finally, finally laid to rest. Amen.
