Days of our Lives spent the week deciding that Halloween was apparently the perfect time to resolve romances, expose family fractures, fake medical recoveries, and send masked strangers wandering around outside the DiMera mansion. Xander nearly died protecting Sarah and somehow came out of the experience with both his life and the woman he loves.

Johnny finally chose his own family over EJ, while EJ responded by disowning him and then dreaming about tying Kristen to a chair. Joy continued building an escape route from her paralysis lie, and Sophia managed to sound suspiciously like herself while pretending to be someone else. Basically, everyone had a normal week.

Xander finally got Sarah back, but the hard part starts now

Xander’s shooting changed everything for Sarah because there was no time for him to calculate what protecting her might earn him. George had a gun, Sarah was in danger, and Xander stepped in front of the bullet. Sarah spent the beginning of the week terrified that he might die before she could tell him what she was already beginning to understand. By the time Xander finally opened his eyes, there was not much mystery left about where her heart had gone.

Brady understood it before Sarah fully said it. He had already watched her fall apart beside Xander’s hospital bed and heard enough to know that staying with her would mean pretending he had not seen what was directly in front of him. Instead of turning the breakup into a fight, Brady let Sarah go with surprising grace. He loved her enough to admit that she was never going to love him the way she loved Xander, which made the whole thing considerably sadder than one of Salem’s usual romantic implosions.

By Friday, Sarah stopped dancing around it. She told Xander that he was the only man she loved and the only man she wanted to be with, then kissed him while Victoria helpfully went trick-or-treating with Maggie. It was sweet, and Xander certainly earned the moment after nearly dying for her. The real question is what happens the next time Xander does something Sarah cannot forgive. These two have returned to this relationship more than once, and taking a bullet cannot become an unlimited-use coupon for future bad decisions.

EJ lost Johnny before his nightmare put Kristen in the crosshairs

EJ proved Johnny was right to question everything the DiMera family had taught him. Johnny confronted his father after the George disaster and finally rejected the idea that power, loyalty, and family require becoming the kind of man EJ wanted him to be. EJ responded by disowning his son, which was especially rich considering Chad later pointed out that Stefano used the same tactic whenever his children failed to behave properly. Apparently, repeating your father’s worst habits does not become more sophisticated just because you do it in a better suit.

Johnny’s rejection hit EJ harder than he wanted anyone to know. Cat found him feeling completely alone, and instead of backing away after all the warnings she has received, she stayed close. Steve specifically told her that EJ was dangerous and that she should stop giving him the benefit of the doubt. Cat heard all of that, then proceeded to help him investigate Dominic and become the person EJ increasingly leans on emotionally. Nothing about that sounds like a recipe for future regret.

Friday’s Halloween nightmare pushed all of this into much darker territory. EJ dreamed that he caught Kristen trying to burn Stefano’s portrait, tied her to a chair, and prepared to kill her before Cat stopped him. In the dream, Cat became the person capable of pulling him back from the edge and reminding him that Johnny’s rejection was really what had pushed him there. EJ woke up before any of it actually happened, but his subconscious apparently has very strong opinions about both women.

Then the episode ended with a hooded, masked figure watching the mansion from outside after EJ and Cat headed off to make popcorn. The timing made the whole nightmare feel less random and more like a warning that EJ’s problems are not finished. Between Kristen still moving around Salem, Dominic finally entering the picture, and Cat continuing to dig into a family history she barely understands, EJ may soon discover that waking up was the easy part.

Joy’s fake recovery is becoming her best lie yet

Joy came dangerously close to being exposed when Stephanie admitted that she had become suspicious enough to ask Kayla about secretly testing her reflexes. Alex immediately rejected the possibility that Joy could be faking paralysis, mostly because he could not believe she would risk losing her daughter. That faith would be justified if she wasn't walking around perfectly well when nobody was looking.

The smartest thing Joy has done is turn the lie into a recovery story. She started moving her toes, let Tate marvel over her progress, and began creating the appearance that her legs were gradually coming back online. That gives her a believable way to start walking again without having to admit she could do it all along. Stephanie had been dangerously close to proving the truth, and now Joy has given her a reason to stop looking.

The Tate angle may be where Joy gets too clever for her own good. She flirted with him during their workout and hugged him just as Alex arrived, all while continuing to tell Kelsey that things are moving toward the family arrangement she wants. Pretending to be interested in Tate may help manipulate Alex, but schemes built on fake attraction have a habit of becoming messy once real feelings enter the room. Joy may think she is managing everybody around her, but one badly timed walk across the room could still turn the whole operation into rubble.

Sophia is starting to leave too many clues behind

Sophia supposedly being gone has become increasingly difficult to believe for the people who knew her best. She called the mental health hotline using the name Amelia, only for both Mason and Holly to immediately notice that the voice sounded exactly like Sophia. Mason had already thought he heard her in the park, while Holly admitted she had become paranoid enough to imagine seeing Sophia everywhere. They dismissed it as their minds playing tricks on them, which is generally the point in Salem when the thing they dismissed turns out to be standing six feet away.

Kristen is not making Sophia’s situation any safer. She resurfaced long enough to confess far too much to Lani, who had not yet officially returned to the police force when the conversation happened. Kristen also admitted she still had one loose end to handle before leaving town. Considering Sophia remains alive because of Kristen’s intervention, that loose end has enough potential to become several additional loose ends before breakfast.

Kristen later moved through Salem in disguise with money intended for Sophia, which means this arrangement is still active no matter how much Kristen claims she wants to disappear. The danger is no longer just somebody catching Sophia in person. Holly and Mason recognize her voice, Amy knows she is alive, Kristen keeps returning to town, and Tate is still orbiting the entire situation without knowing the truth. Sophia wanted closure with her mother, but every contact she makes drops another breadcrumb leading directly back to her.

Join us next time when somebody in Salem will hopefully ask why mysterious hooded people keep appearing outside mansions without anyone investing in a motion-activated porch light. Joy may discover that pretending to recover from fake paralysis requires more paperwork than expected, while EJ could learn that disowning family members does not actually make them disappear. Somewhere, Kristen will probably be wearing another disguise because apparently leaving town is much harder than simply driving past the welcome sign.
