Days of our Lives spent the week discovering that secrets eventually become much harder to manage when everybody involved starts making independent decisions.

Johnny finally decided covering for EJ was doing more damage than protecting him. Marlena kept digging into Dominic until she reached Rita, who suddenly looked a lot less comfortable than usual. Joy continued faking paralysis while taking actual medication to support the lie, which seems like an excellent way to turn a bad plan into a medical emergency. Meanwhile, Philip tried to save Titan without saving himself from the gambling world that nearly destroyed him before. Nobody was exactly having a calm week.

Johnny finally decided EJ was not worth protecting

Johnny spent much of the week circling the decision he clearly knew he had to make. Theo’s resignation already forced him to look at what running DiMera alongside EJ was turning him into. Then the Coriseal mess kept spreading, Sarah became the target of a public campaign, and George continued encouraging the same deny-and-deflect tactics Johnny had started to hate.

Sydney tried to talk him out of confessing. She understood that Johnny could expose himself along with EJ, especially if investigators decided he helped cover up what happened with Coriseal. Johnny understood that too. The difference was that he finally reached the point where protecting himself no longer seemed worth letting more people get hurt.

By Friday, he went to Rafe and told him everything. Johnny admitted the FDA complaints were legitimate, said EJ knew about the problems, and explained his own part in keeping the truth buried. He was not pretending this would end neatly. Rafe warned that Johnny could face criminal consequences, and Johnny accepted that possibility.

That was what made the scene work. Johnny did not suddenly decide he was innocent because EJ was worse. He knew he participated. Chanel and the children became the reason he wanted to stop becoming the kind of man who keeps excusing bad decisions because family made them.

Rafe also asked the harder question. Johnny could lose EJ forever. Johnny still loved his father, but he finally seemed to understand that loving EJ did not require following him into every hole he dug. EJ, naturally, spent the same day complaining that Johnny lacked the ruthlessness to run DiMera. That probably sounded cleverer in EJ’s head.

Marlena may be finding out just how much Stefano hid from her

Dominic’s birth certificate already turned the mystery into something deeply personal for Marlena. According to the document, Dominic is the child of Marlena and Stefano. Marlena understandably refused to accept that at face value, especially considering the source of nearly every nightmare in this story is Stefano DiMera.

Her memories of San Cristobal kept returning before anyone knew what Bo and Hope would uncover. The Celtic knot, the island, and the name Dominic were already pushing through whatever Marlena had buried. Once the birth certificate appeared, those fragments stopped looking random.

The most disturbing part remains how little Marlena knows about what Stefano did to her during those missing years. Brady reminded everyone that Stefano previously forced Marlena to act as a surrogate for Cassie and Rex. That does not explain Dominic, but it makes almost any reproductive manipulation imaginable without requiring a huge leap.

Marlena spent part of the week hoping there might be another explanation. Maybe someone else carried Dominic. Maybe the document was false. Maybe Stefano created one final elaborate lie. Nobody should rush to accept paperwork connected to Stefano as holy scripture. Then Steve found Rita’s fingerprints on the Verdi program. That moved Rita from suspicious background presence into the center of Marlena’s investigation.

Marlena confronted her directly at the DiMera mansion. Rita had explanations for the program, but Marlena kept pressing. Rita seemed genuinely startled when Marlena revealed the birth certificate, which may mean even she does not know the entire story.

Then EJ skulked in the hallway while Marlena demanded to know whether Dominic was her son with Stefano. For once, EJ may be the person in the room who knows the least about his own family.

Joy’s fake paralysis is becoming dangerously real

Joy officially crossed from deception into recklessness this week. Viewers finally got confirmation that she can move when nobody is watching. That answered the big question about whether her paralysis was genuine. Unfortunately for Joy, proving paralysis requires more than staying very still whenever somebody enters the room.

Her upcoming nerve conduction study created a problem because the results would expose her. Joy tried finding out how much muscle relaxant she would need to interfere with the test. When that research did not give her an easy answer, she still went forward with the plan.

The pills arrived with remarkable Salem postal efficiency. Joy took them before the test, and the medication apparently worked well enough to produce abnormal results. It also left her barely able to keep her eyes open.

That is where the scheme stopped being merely manipulative and became genuinely dangerous. Joy is now taking real medication to support a fake medical condition. An overdose or interaction would turn her invented paralysis into a legitimate emergency very quickly.

Then there is Alex. Joy seems to believe keeping Alex close through Kelsey will somehow give her the family she wants. But if her deception destroys Alex and Stephanie’s marriage, there is no guarantee Alex will suddenly see Joy as the obvious alternative. He may simply resent her for manipulating everybody.

Stephanie is not helping matters. She admitted to Kayla that part of her wished Paulina had not interrupted her near-kiss with Theo. Stephanie may think attraction to Theo offers an escape from the loneliness of her marriage, but making a second emotional mess will not clean up the first one. Salem is currently watching three adults respond to one bad situation by selecting three completely different worse ideas.

Philip saved Titan but may be walking back toward gambling

Philip continued to be one of the more interesting problems of the week because he genuinely accomplished something good through the very thing that once nearly destroyed him. His gambling winnings saved Titan. That made the danger much harder to dismiss.

Maggie and Kate both reacted exactly as people who know Philip’s history should. They were relieved Titan survived, but neither wanted the victory treated as proof that gambling was suddenly safe for him. Philip promised Kate he would not do it again. He also carried that poker chip around like a reminder that the door was still open.

Then Leo asked for Philip’s help investigating the money behind the Gabi Chic knockoffs. The likely laundering route leads directly through gambling. Philip knows that world better than most people in Salem, which makes him extremely useful and puts him directly beside the thing he promised everyone he would avoid.

This story will be much stronger if Philip does not simply relapse again. Salem has already watched that version. The more interesting story would have Philip reach the edge, recognize what is happening, and choose to stop himself because he finally learned something from the damage he caused before.

Meanwhile, Xander and Philip got one satisfying victory when they delivered the money to EJ and wiped out the loan threatening Titan. EJ expected to watch the company collapse. Instead, Philip handed him the payoff while Xander stood beside him enjoying every second.

EJ reacted about as gracefully as expected. His plan to destroy Titan failed. Johnny was confessing to Rafe. Cat quit. Sarah’s situation could still expose the Coriseal cover-up. Rita may have her own agenda.

EJ spent much of the week believing he was controlling several separate problems. By Friday, those problems had started comparing notes.

OUTRO

Join us next time when Rita may discover that vague loyalty statements have an expiration date, Joy attempts to survive her own medical fraud, and Philip tries walking through the gambling world without accidentally moving back in. EJ can also begin checking behind every curtain in the mansion in case another person is secretly investigating him. Salem should probably issue clipboards.

Days of our Lives is available on the Peacock streaming app.
