The Hortons have been carrying a lot of emotional weight lately on Days of our Lives. Jennifer’s (Melissa Reeves) desire to take Thomas (Cary Christopher) and Charlotte (Autumn Gendron) to Boston has created some major tension with Chad. But as that all plays out on-screen, it makes the timing of Cary Christopher’s latest update feel especially tender and a little unavoidable, especially since he’s exiting the show.

Days of Our Lives’ Cary Christopher says goodbye

Christopher laid it out plainly on Facebook: “My last appearance on Days of our Lives will be next month. I have 3 more episodes as Thomas DiMera, the next on January 21st. It's been such a great ride!” Showing just how kind he is, he added, “Please welcome the new Thomas with open arms.”

He also noted that his new show, It’s Not Like That, premieres January 25. And in a surprise twist, the cute kid’s career continues to propel him forward as he ended on, “And right now I am in Berlin working on an exciting new project.”

The photos that accompanied the post did some storytelling of their own, including recent shots of Christopher bundled up on city streets, sunglasses on, leather jacket zipped, looking equal parts kid and professional, alongside the soft-toned poster for It’s Not Like That, a pastel collage of faces and moments that leans into warmth and transition rather than spectacle.

Earlier this month, he’d shared that same poster with a caption about fresh starts and courage, framing the project as a story about two families beginning again, which lands with a certain irony now that his own long-running chapter in Salem is drawing to a close.

Fans react with love

The comment section filled fast, the tone unmistakably affectionate, with @AlyssaMansfield writing, “Aw, you were such a great little Thomas! We will miss you!” while @KellieCotey added, “You will be missed as Thomas, and good luck with your future endeavors.”

Others looked toward the future, with @JenniferBenya calling him “the real Thomas” and telling him he has “the whole world ahead of you,” and @PatriciaJohnson predicting a future where people say, “WOW, remember when Cary Christopher was on Days of our Lives.”

Some fans got specific, which always hits harder, as @SusanMangan recalled “a heart-to-heart conversation with Chad, Emmy worthy,” while @JessicaBekar praised his work in Weapons and thanked him for bringing Thomas to life alongside Billy Flynn (Chad), a pairing many clearly aren’t ready to let go of.

For a show built on generations and handoffs, this feels like one of those moments that stings but also makes sense, the kind where you miss the character already even as you start scanning the calendar for what comes next, because Salem has a way of doing that. And so, increasingly, does Christopher.

Days of our Lives is available on the Peacock streaming app.
