Days of our Lives began celebrating its 61st anniversary by giving EJ DiMera another brother, letting Kristen wander around a memorial dressed as Susan Banks, and trapping Leo inside a shipping container full of suspicious money. Meanwhile, Stephanie discovered that being right about Joy apparently counts for absolutely nothing, Xander offered Sarah some surprisingly sensible relationship advice, and Sophia nearly ruined her own disappearing act because she couldn't stay away from her son. For a town supposedly recovering from Halloween, Salem certainly had trouble putting the monsters back in their cupboards.

Dominic finally arrived and the DiMera family got even more complicated

Dominic Marino spent much of the week lurking around Salem, apparently determined to make his introduction as unsettling as possible. EJ recalled seeing a masked figure wearing a feathered cloak outside his window, while Sydney discovered a feather on the grounds. The same mysterious visitor appeared outside Marlena's home while Belle was handing out Halloween candy. By the time Rita welcomed Dominic back to his hotel room, his peculiar sightseeing expedition had established that Salem's newest resident wasn't particularly interested in ordinary introductions.

Marlena was already struggling with the possibility that Dominic was her son with Stefano. Hearing his voice on his voicemail made the situation more tangible, but nothing could prepare her for finally coming face-to-face with him. Meanwhile, Cat continued investigating the birth certificate and planned a trip to San Cristobal to examine the original document. Her growing involvement with EJ complicated matters, particularly since Steve wasn't convinced she could keep her personal feelings separate from her assignment.

Friday's memorial for Lexie brought the family complications together beautifully. Kristen arrived disguised as Susan Banks and managed to fool Roman long enough to spend a few private moments with her sister's urn. Her farewell was genuinely touching, particularly when she thanked Lexie for warning her about EJ's plans to send her away. That warning allowed Kristen to remain close to Rachel when her daughter desperately needed her. For all Kristen's manipulation and questionable decisions, her grief and gratitude were unmistakably sincere.

Unfortunately, Kristen's disguise nearly fell apart when Roman questioned her about making the sign of the cross. She managed to talk her way out of that encounter and even fooled EJ before the real Susan arrived. Kristen had already slipped away, leaving EJ to realize he'd been speaking to his sister. Naturally, this was precisely when Dominic decided to enter the Brady Pub and introduce himself as EJ's brother. Stefano's ring on Dominic's finger made the moment even more intriguing. The question now is whether Dominic intends to embrace his newfound family or has something considerably more ambitious in mind.

The timing was especially fitting for the show's anniversary. Julie spent part of Friday remembering Tom and Alice, while Marlena quietly marked her anniversary with John. Those moments honored Salem's history while Dominic's arrival opened another chapter in the DiMera saga. As the mystery surrounding Dominic's parentage continues, Stefano's influence seems destined to trouble Salem long after his death.

Meanwhile, the DiMera family's troubles extended well beyond unexpected siblings. Johnny received mysterious shipping documents that Sydney quickly recognized contained suspicious weight discrepancies, suggesting someone was using DiMera vessels to smuggle illegal merchandise. Chad and Theo connected the discovery to Leo's counterfeit handbag investigation, which eventually led Leo to question Gwen about EJ's questionable business dealings.

She remembered a warehouse at Pier 4, and despite warning Leo to stay away, she apparently underestimated his determination to get himself into trouble. Leo discovered a fortune in cash inside a shipping container before someone slammed the door shut, trapping him inside. By Friday, Gwen and Gabi were celebrating his investigative progress while wondering why he wasn't answering his phone. Considering their star investigator was currently locked inside what amounted to an oversized metal lunchbox, somebody might want to start worrying a little more seriously.

Stephanie kept fighting while Alex continued defending Joy

Stephanie finally received something resembling vindication when Philip remembered that Joy had been taking muscle relaxants. Considering Stephanie's suspicions that Joy had faked her paralysis, this seemed like the missing piece of evidence she'd been desperately seeking. She confronted Joy with the information, only for Alex to remain unconvinced. Apparently, a suspicious medical history and an increasingly desperate wife aren't enough to persuade him that something might be wrong with the woman who has disrupted their marriage.

The trouble was that Stephanie couldn't prove when Joy had obtained or taken the medication. Alex checked the prescription bottle and found it full, while Steve discovered no earlier prescription record. That left Stephanie without the definitive evidence she needed. Still, the absence of proof doesn't necessarily mean her suspicions are unfounded. Alex seems determined to give Joy every possible benefit of the doubt while expecting Stephanie to accept the situation without complaint. This is becoming considerably more frustrating than the original deception.

What made Stephanie's confrontation especially satisfying was her willingness to stand up for herself. She's spent too much time accommodating other people's demands while her own concerns were dismissed. Joy understands exactly how to exploit Alex's sympathy, particularly when Kelsey is involved. Alex wants to be a responsible father, which is admirable, but that shouldn't require him to ignore his wife's increasingly legitimate concerns. Stephanie isn't asking him to abandon his daughter. She's asking him to recognize that Joy's behavior deserves closer scrutiny.

Philip's involvement added another layer of complication. His own gambling problems resurfaced when Sydney invited him into a poker game, and he appeared dangerously close to accepting. Gabi interrupted before anything happened, although Philip's awkward behavior immediately caught her attention. His explanation involving Xander's hospitalization was effective enough to redirect her suspicions, but Gabi isn't somebody who overlooks strange behavior indefinitely. Philip already has enough problems without gambling his way into another disaster.

The real concern is how much damage Alex and Stephanie's marriage can withstand before the truth finally emerges. Even if Stephanie eventually exposes Joy, that won't automatically erase Alex's repeated refusal to believe her. As the growing tensions surrounding Joy continue, the greater danger may be that Alex discovers the truth only after Stephanie decides she's had enough.

Xander finally showed some restraint while Sarah faced the consequences

Xander delivered one of the week's more unexpected developments by demonstrating genuine maturity about his relationship with Sarah. After everything they've endured, a reunion seemed inevitable once Sarah acknowledged that her relationship with Brady was over. Even Xander appeared surprised when he learned Brady had ended things first. Nevertheless, instead of immediately welcoming Sarah back into his arms, Xander recognized that their problems hadn't magically disappeared simply because their circumstances had changed.

His conversation with Marlena revealed a much healthier understanding of their relationship than he'd previously demonstrated. Xander acknowledged that love had never been the problem. Their repeated separations came from unresolved issues and the expectations they placed on one another. He understood that Sarah had work to do just as he did, and he wanted their next reunion to be permanent rather than another temporary reconciliation followed by the inevitable emotional explosion.

Sarah wasn't particularly happy when Xander suggested they needed more time. Her disappointment became even more apparent when he proposed hiring a nurse to help with his recovery rather than relying on her. Still, his decision made sense. Sarah had barely ended one relationship before attempting to rebuild another, and Xander was recovering from a shooting that had already caused considerable turmoil. Giving themselves some breathing room was probably the most sensible decision either had made in months.

Thursday brought Sarah some desperately needed good news when Lani revealed that evidence from O'Halloran's laptop cleared her of wrongdoing in Destiny's death. Sarah's relief was understandable, especially after a patient refused her care because of the accusations. Unfortunately, the same investigation left Xander facing serious legal problems. Lani warned that his criminal history and possession of an unlicensed gun could have consequences regardless of the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Being a hero doesn't necessarily provide immunity from the law.

Brady also deserves some credit for handling the breakup with considerable grace. He was honest about his feelings, including during his conversation with Tate, and made it clear to Sarah that he still cared about her. He also worried about the possibility of Xander hurting her again. For once, this romantic triangle produced several adults behaving like adults. Whether Xander's legal troubles threaten their future remains to be seen, but his determination to address their relationship problems before rushing into another reunion deserves recognition.

Sophia's return threatened to unravel everything she had planned

Sophia continued demonstrating that disappearing from Salem is considerably easier than actually staying away. Kristen provided her with money and access to an offshore account, giving her the resources to leave town and begin again. Sophia seemed delighted by the arrangement, but her continued fascination with Trey suggested she wasn't remotely prepared to abandon her old life. Her supposed death had already caused enormous pain, and another impulsive decision threatened to undo the entire deception.

Her encounter with Chanel was particularly revealing. Wearing a Halloween disguise, Sophia watched Chanel with Trey and returned the child's dropped toy. Chanel had no idea who was standing in front of her, but the moment demonstrated how difficult Sophia found it to remain separated from her son. She might understand intellectually that Trey is better off with his adoptive family, yet accepting that reality is another matter. Kristen's reassurance could only accomplish so much when Sophia's actions continued contradicting her apparent willingness to move on.

Meanwhile, Holly remained convinced that Sophia was alive, particularly after spotting her in the square. Tate dismissed her suspicions, which was understandable given the circumstances, but his certainty became increasingly frustrating. Salem residents have witnessed enough supposed deaths and improbable returns that dismissing a possible sighting seems rather optimistic. Aaron's attempt to contact Sophia through a séance was hardly a reliable investigative method, although the group's skepticism was rather amusing considering Salem's extensive supernatural history.

Mason proved considerably more receptive to Holly's concerns. Unlike Tate, he recognized that the absence of a body left room for questions, and he agreed to help her investigate. His involvement also raised another intriguing possibility when he bonded with Theo over their shared experiences of losing a parent. The conversation offered a small glimpse into Mason's background, which could eventually become important if his family connections lead back to someone already living in Salem.

The biggest concern remains Sophia herself. Her longing for Trey is understandable, but her history of manipulation makes another confrontation potentially dangerous. Holly and Mason may uncover the truth before Sophia manages to disappear, particularly if she continues wandering around town in increasingly ineffective disguises. With suspicions about Sophia's survival growing, Salem could soon discover that the presumed dead teenager has been considerably closer than anyone imagined.
