28 Years Later Part 3 has a "very good script", teases Danny Boyle

The wait for an update on 28 Years Later Part 3 might finally be over, as Danny Boyle has teased what's in store for the fans waiting for the movie. Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, as reported by Variety, Danny Boyle said:

"28 Years 3,’ or whatever it ends up being called, will get made because people keep asking about it. Quite when I’m not sure, but there’s a script – a very good script by Alex Garland"

Through his statement, Boyle has confirmed that a script for the third movie already exists, with the Academy-nominated writer Alex Garland (who is also the writer of the first two parts) behind it. He also made it clear, through his statement, that he considers the script "very good," although he did not reveal when the movie will be made or confirm its final title.

Danny Boyle recently worked on Ink and Southbank at 75: You Are Here. According to IMDb, Methuselah is another upcoming project Boyle is attached to.

What did Danny Boyle say about 28 Years Later Part 3?

Speaking of 28 Years Later Part 3 at the Zurich Film Festival, as reported by Variety, director Danny Boyle revealed that Cillian Murphy will have a big presence in 28 Years Later Part 3. However, he did not share any more details about Murphy's role, leaving it to speculation.

While Cillian Murphy did not appear in 28 Years Later, released in 2025, he appeared as Jim in the second movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, released earlier this year in January. Though his role was brief, his character Jim appears in an important scene towards the end of the movie with his daughter, Sam, as they see two people being chased. When asked by the daughter if they should help them, Jim says, "Of course, we do," and the movie cuts to its end.

The first movie was directed by Danny Boyle, famous for 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, and Shallow Grave, and the second part was directed by Nia DaCosta, famous for Candyman, Hedda, and Little Woods.

Last year in June, while speaking to Men's Health, Danny Boyle shared an update on 28 Years Later Part 3, saying Sony's decision on the budget will determine when the third movie can move ahead. He also shared that the story is already mapped out and that Cillian Murphy will have a much bigger role this time around, as recently shared by Variety.

Speaking about when the third movie could begin filming, Boyle explained to the outlet that the production would likely have to take place during the summer because much of the movie takes place outdoors, adding:

"And to do that in Britain, you have to shoot in the summer. In theory, it would shoot next summer."

Boyle made these comments in 2025, and the summer window he mentioned has now passed, with no filming start date announced as of now.

In December 2025, Deadline reported that Sony was moving forward with 28 Years Later Part 3, with Alex Garland writing the script and Cillian Murphy in talks to return. As of now, the production has not announced a final title, full cast (though Danny Boyle has confirmed Cillian Murphy's involvement), or exact plot for 28 Years Later Part 3.
