A new poster for the upcoming The Hunger Games film, Sunrise on the Reaping has been released, and it includes almost all characters of the film. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, and the poster features multiple elements that symbolize important events that take place throughout that novel.

The film is set years before the main Hunger Games films (2012-2015) and is also a sequel to The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). The film will thus take us to a new era of the franchise, to a time we've only heard of but are yet to witness.

New poster for The Hunger Games' Sunrise on the Reaping symbolises everything the franchise stands for

The upcoming film will follow the second Quarter Quell, the 50th year of the games, during which double the regular number of tributes were selected to fight for their lives. Haymitch Abernathy (played by Joseph Zada), whom we saw as Katniss and Peeta's mentor in the original Hunger Games books, is a tribute in the 50th year of the games along with 3 other tributes from District 12.

The new poster for the film features Haymitch Abernathy at the center of it, echoing the fact that he's the film's protagonist. Behind him is Lenore Dove (played by Whitney Peak), the girl Haymitch loved but unfortunately couldn't be with.

At the top of the poster is President Snow (played by Ralph Fiennes), and the placing of the character is symbolic of the fact that he is the president of Panem and has his eyes on everything. He is not only positioned above Haymitch and Lenore but also above the other tributes, Capitol personnel, elements of the arena, and the symbols of District 12.

The poster features other important characters of the film like Maysilee Donner, Louella McCoy, Wyatt Callow, Ampert Latier, Plutarch Heavensbee, Effie Trinket, Caesar Flickerman, Beetee Latier, Wiress, Mags Flanagan, Willamae Abernathy, Drusilla Sickle, Asterid March, and Clerk Carmine, among others.

At the bottom of the poster is an image of a mockingjay, which is extremely symbolical. Mockingjays symbolize rebellion in the Hunger Games franchise. In the original trilogy, Katniss Everdeen wore a mockingjay pin as a sign of resistance. That pin originally belonged to Maysilee Donner (played by Mckenna Grace) and was passed down to Katniss eventually. Maysilee was also rebellious, and we will see her in the upcoming film.

The poster also features gears, machinery, mechanical components, cables, metal structures, and the Capitol emblem. All these elements are symbols of the fact that the arena is a machine, one that can be broken. Various kinds of birds are featured in the poster, and each kind represents something different in The Hunger Games books and films.

In the poster, all the characters are surrounded by flowers and leaves, which seem like a reference to the arena of the 50th year of the games. The arena of this particular Quarter Quell is extremely beautiful. It has forests, flowers, a meadow, mountains, seemingly edible vegetation, and water. However, most of them are all just pretty to look at and are designed to kill the tributes.

The poster thus symbolizes more than what is obvious. It is a symbol of a new era of the franchise, one that shows us the beginning of the rebellion Katniss would become the face of.

The upcoming film in The Hunger Games franchise is directed and produced by Francis Lawrence. Other producers of the film are Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Color Force is the production company, and Lionsgate is the distributor.

The Hunger Games' new film, Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026.
