On Tuesday, Donald Trump attended a campaign rally in Texas and made allegations about Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico. Trump, who is 80, stated:

“Not only did Talafreako state that God is transgender, he actually said that if Jesus Christ himself came and visited the Texas legislature, Jesus would be promoting sex changes for little children.”

The opinion is Trump’s own and has no factual/legal finding by the outlet.

Journalist, internet personality, and vocal Trump critic Aaron Rupar shared the video from Trump’s rally and wrote:

“A heavily slurring Trump lies his a** off.”

In 2021, James Talarico said during a floor debate in the Texas legislature that “God is nonbinary.” However, he supports restricting gender-affirming surgeries for minors.

Exploring further James Talarico’s remarks on God and gender

During a May 2026 appearance on ABC News Live, James Talarico addressed his past comment about God and claimed it was “meant to be deliberately provocative.” He explained:

“You can't use human categories to define God.”

Talarico, 37, accused his Republican opponent Ken Paxton of clipping his “past cringe comments” to “distract from his career of corruption.” According to James, Ken was using his “playbook” of “division” and “distraction.”

Back then, Ken Paxton’s campaign used James Talarico’s comments on God, transgender rights, and immigration in their campaign ad titled, “Radical Talarico: Too low-T for Texas.”

Meanwhile, Paxton, who is Texas Attorney General, was recovering from the controversy of his 2023 impeachment trial and from his wife's divorce filing on “biblical grounds.”

Earlier this month, James Talarico appeared at a town hall meeting jointly hosted by Jubilee and CNN. The audience asked him questions about theology and gender. Replying to Sarah Gardner, he stated:

“God is an absolute source of truth. We as Christians, you and I are both members of the body of Christ. You are my sister in Christ. And it’s okay if you and I have disagreements about our interpretations of Scripture or certainly about political and policy topics. That should be encouraged, not discouraged. And we can do that as we’re called to do in Scripture; do it with love.”

Talarico added:

“I know that this has been used in these attack ads all over the state. The first comment about God not being defined by gender, when I said that I was being provocative, and I want to admit that and come clean about that.”

He reiterated that God can’t be defined using human categories and claimed:

“Not only did I say that, but the late Charlie Kirk said that. The late Pope Benedict said that. So, yes, I was doing it maybe in an annoying way. I can admit that.”

When asked about his support for a ban on gender-affirming surgeries for minors, James Talarico defended himself and noted that the discussion needed “nuance and thoughtfulness.” He explained:

“When it comes to kids, as a policymaker, I always have to balance two things. One is protecting children and honoring parents’ rights, because I believe parental rights are sacred, and we should trust parents to raise their kids. But if there’s something that’s going to endanger a child or a minor, certainly something that could cause permanent damage, then I’m always going to try to err on the side of protecting those kids.”

Talarico favors gender-affirming care for adults. He added:

“In the state legislature, the Republican majority tried to pass an extreme ban that would go after all kinds of different forms of health care, not just gender reassignment surgeries. I actually supported an amendment to that bill to limit the legislation to just banning surgeries for those under the age of 18.”

While James Talarico supports abortion rights, he assured voters that if they opposed it, he respects them, just like he respects his “spiritual heroes,” such as Pope Francis and Pope Leo, who are also against abortion. However, he reminded everyone that the Popes also opposed poverty, climate change, and other key issues humanity is facing.

“We’re both Christians and the Bible is silent on the issue of abortion. It means you and I both have to look at different scriptures to try to come to a conclusion. But what I think we can do is actually come together on reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies and the number of abortions, because if we treat this issue as a public health problem and not a culture war problem, then we can actually make progress together,” he stated.

Donald Trump endorsed Ken Paxton in May 2026, calling him “an America First Patriot” and “true MAGA warrior” in a Truth Social post. Meanwhile, the POTUS has also called out Talarico and often describes him as “Talafreako.”
