On Sunday, late American pro-boxer, activist, and cultural icon Muhammad Ali’s daughter and grandson endorsed Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. Ali’s daughter Khaliah Ali said during a church campaign event in Detroit, addressing Abdul El-Sayed:“You know Ali had to show up if there was a fight. What made you think this was going to go down without one of us showing up? You got two of us. This is what legacy is. This is why my father fought. They shattered that glass ceiling to pave the beautiful, shining way for you, my dear brother.”Muhammad Ali’s grandson, Jacob Ali-Wertheimer, echoed Khaliah’s sentiments. He stated:“Abdul El-Sayed is a part of Muhammad Ali’s legacy. A man who understands what it means for people to be talked down to for the color of your skin or for the faith you believe in, or the things you dare to stand up to, whether it be unjust or still occurring to this day. There are troubling times ahead of us… We feel the rising tide of hatred.”Jacob further mentioned that, like the rest of the country, Michiganders were feeling the rising cost of living and assured everyone that Abdul El-Sayed was “another fighter in our corner” carrying on Muhammad Ali’s legacy.“We have got another champion in the making, Abdul El-Sayed, and I am proud to be here to speak on his behalf and in his support… because this is another pivotal time. And as my mother said and my grandfather always used to say, ‘Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.’ So, I say, it’s about time we pay our rent,” Jacob concluded.Khaliah Ali is on the board of the Philadelphia Juvenile Law Center and is carrying on the fight for social justice in the footsteps of her famous father. Meanwhile, Jacob Ali-Wertheimer is a Harvard Law School graduate.Abdul El-Sayed lost the endorsement of Haley StevensOn the day Muhammad Ali’s daughter and grandson endorsed Abdul El-Sayed, Democratic Michigan Representative Haley Stevens dropped her endorsement of El-Sayed at the last minute and instead endorsed Republican nominee Mike Rogers in a decision that has surprised fellow Democrats across the country. On Sunday morning, Stevens appeared at a church service in Detroit alongside Rogers and endorsed him to reporters gathered outside. She later took to social media and shared in a video post:“Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said that I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he is right, and that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.”Haley Stevens continued:“I don’t belong in Abdul’s campaign. I do not stand with Hasan Piker, who gets trafficked on our college campuses. A dear friend of mine, earlier today, was saying that education is on the ballot. And she is absolutely right. And what our students and our children see, and who we are as Michiganders, is not hate and is not what we are getting out of our Democratic nominee right now.”The congresswoman shared that she is “just one person” and reminded everyone how much she loves the state and ran her own campaign as a “love letter to Michigan.” Stevens added:“I am here to declare who we are as Michiganders. This is Phil Hart’s seat for the U.S. Senate. This is the conscience of the Senate right now and our Michigan moment… I am still a very proud Democrat and I still believe in everything I have voted for and said and worked really hard and I would continue to do so in all the ways life’s opportunities afford.”Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary against Haley Stevens in August. The duo was scheduled to appear at a church service on Sunday with Democratic South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn; however, Stevens was disinvited by El-Sayed’s campaign. Abdul also advised Haley to stay away “so as not to distract from the central issues of the campaign.” He added:“I don’t want any distractions. It seems as though other folks are more interested in making this race about things that it’s not about. Congresswoman Stevens seems intent on relitigating a primary that ended three months ago. Let’s all focus on the task at hand: that’s beating Mike Rogers, holding Trump accountable, and getting money out of politics, putting money in pockets, and passing Medicare for All.”Following Stevens’ endorsement of Mike Rogers, El-Sayed told reporters:“I actually don't think about Haley Stevens. None of these matters. I’m just less interested in the politics of it all than I am in the policy of it all.”Meanwhile, Haley Stevens appeared on the CNN show Anderson Cooper 360° and shared:“Nothing with me changed… This is about Abdul getting angrier and angrier… and injecting lack of kindness… My mind is made up. I am rock solid. I am an independent woman, and I made my decision. I still love my party a whole lot, and I know there are a lot of people working really hard on elections all over the country… This is about Michigan, not just Democrats…”According to CNN, several staffers of Haley Stevens resigned following her endorsement of Mike Rogers. Notably, she tweeted in August:“Mike Rogers will be another rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda. We can’t afford to give MAGA another Senate seat in November.”Meanwhile, her fellow Democratic Michigan Representative Debbie Dingell told Anderson Cooper that she had talked to Haley Stevens the night before, and that she had assured her that she would never endorse Rogers.President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson praised Stevens’ endorsement of Rogers. However, Haley told Anderson:“Well, I impeached him [Trump] twice. But then, Mike Johnson has passed a couple of my bills as the speaker… It’s all just too much… I think Republicans have shown that they are all just focused on letting Trump be the dictator. But that’s not what the Democratic Party is… Sometimes Democrats go into the chamber, and they don’t always vote with the party… I wasn’t with the Biden switch around.”Haley Stevens’ fiancé and civil rights lawyer Jason Turkish donated to both Democrats and Republicans for the midterm election, according to FEC reports. However, Turkish, who is a Jewish Democrat, recently announced he’d vote for Mike Rogers and accused Abdul El-Sayed of antisemitism following his pro-Gaza rhetoric. Both Stevens and Turkish have publicly expressed support for Israel.Additionally, Abdul El-Sayed has ties to left-wing political streamer Hasan Piker and his uncle Cenk Uygur, whose PAC recently released a controversial video and documentary on late Republican South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham. Haley Stevens is a vocal critic of both Piker and Uygur, which might have deepened her dispute with Abdul El-Sayed.
