After the horrifying murder of Sonya Massey, her killer dies at 32 after being denied medical release

On July 6, 2024, tragedy struck Sonya Massey’s family when she was brutally murdered after she called 911 to report prowler activity outside her house. When two sheriff deputies arrived at the location after responding to Massey’s 911 call, things quickly took a grim turn. Among the two sheriff deputies, one was Sean Grayson.

Right after Sean entered the house, the body-camera footage reportedly revealed that Massey tried to crouch in her kitchen. Grayson then shot her three times in the face, which eventually led to her tragic death. After the incident, Massey’s killer, Sean Grayson, received a 20-year prison sentence. Grayson’s attorney, Daniel Fultz, revealed that Grayson passed away on Sunday around noon.

Before Sean Grayson’s death, he was denied an early release after he filed for it in May. Even before the death of Sonya Massey, Grayson was already suffering from colon cancer. His attorneys revealed that the cancer began to spread and had already affected his liver and lungs. Initially, he was diagnosed with Stage 3, which later progressed to Stage 4 according to his attorneys.

As Daniel Fultz, Grayson’s attorney, reportedly refused to give further details regarding Grayson’s death, many have speculated that the reason is the colon cancer with which he was suffering. While speaking about the early release for which Grayson had applied after being sentenced to prison for killing Massey, John Milhiser, the Sangamon County state’s attorney, reportedly pointed out that releasing Grayson “under these circumstances would be a miscarriage of justice”.

He also added that it would be an “insult to Sonya Massey’s memory and family”. Democratic governor JB Pritzker also shared in a statement regarding the death of Massey, noting that her death is a “profound loss”. While Grayson and his fellow sheriff's deputy arrived at Massey’s house, the body camera footage showed Massey saying, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”.

In the application that Grayson sent for his early release, he apologized for his actions and pointed out that Massey “had attacked” him with “a pot of boiling water”. On Sunday evening, a statement was reportedly released by the attorneys of Massey, Ben Crump, and Antonio Romanucci, noting that Massey’s “death was unjustifiable”.

Massey’s son, Malachi Massey, in an interview with ABC News, pointed out that he is not able to register the reason Sean Grayson “would want compassion”, because if the “roles” were “reversed” things would have been different. Sonya Massey was just 36 when she lost her life. Before shooting Massey, Grayson reportedly threatened to shoot her.

This caused Massey to crouch down after covering her face. The moment she rose, she was shot three times. Massey’s mother, Donna Massey, while speaking about her daughter getting shot three times, noted in an interview with ABC News that it is “intent to kill”. She also spoke about the emotional struggles that she has been through after the death of her daughter.

She has “never been depressed before”, but now she is “depressed all the time”. Massey’s mother had also made a call on the day before Massey’s death, letting them know about her daughter's mental breakdown. The Sonya Massey Act has been passed by Illinois. This act requires a thorough review of the applicants' pasts before they are hired as officers.
