AI is advancing at a remarkable pace, but what happens if that progress comes at a catastrophic cost? According to a recent report by Axios, OpenAI, Anthropic, and major tech companies are privately preparing for a potential Artificial Intelligence-related "catastrophic event" (in the next 6-12 months), which could put the entire industry under intense scrutiny.

With the risks of tech infiltrating everyday life increasing each day, top Executives at major tech companies are preparing for a 'worst-case scenario'. While the exact details of the potential disaster are being kept under wraps, the companies fear the large-scale event will most likely be a cyberattack, which would have consequences in the real world. The Axios report lists disruptions in online banking, financial services, internet access across a large area, and even interference with electricity and water infrastructure as some of the consequences.

AI industry giants consider how to handle a catastrophic incident

Axios reported that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and industry giants are preparing for a major Artificial Intelligence-related catastrophic incident. While scenario planning and strategy building are key in tech companies, industry insiders report that leaders believe such a large-scale incident is 'inevitable,' forcing them to implement models to contain it in the future.

Speaking to Axios, a company spokesperson revealed how tech giants are preparing to contain and handle the potential disaster:

"OpenAI conducts preparedness exercises where teams discuss and work through a range of potential scenarios. These scenarios are not treated as inevitable, but are meant to help us prepare for a variety of circumstances."

While discussions do not mean a catastrophe is imminent, it is no secret that Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly efficient in carrying out complex tasks. The report suggests industry leaders are closely monitoring the situation, in case a system behaves unexpectedly or someone uses it maliciously.

Additionally, concerns about an 'inevitable' Artificial Intelligence-related disaster stem from how individuals have used the technology for nefarious purposes in recent times. The report mentions an alleged breach at two South Korean banks, where a hacker from China reportedly used Artificial Intelligence tools to steal data from bank customers. According to cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, the hacker also used Claude Code to sell the stolen data, which further justifies the concerns.

Industry leaders fear an Artificial Intelligence-assisted attack could quickly turn the public against them, leading to questions about whether companies developed their technology too quickly without adequate safeguards. The disaster might trigger a political backlash, where Democrats would rally to shut down Artificial Intelligence if they gain control in the upcoming Midterm elections.

With Democrats likely pushing for tougher tech restrictions after a potential win in the midterms, leaders are briefing members of Congress in case a crisis occurs.
