The killing of Alex Pretti has sparked nationwide unrest with people raising their voices against the US federal agents.

In this regard, Stephen King recently took to his X account and shared a tweet about the shooting. He wrote:

“Alex Pretti was murdered.”

King's post garnered more than one million views shortly after. Many users who supported Trump echoed similar views, describing the incident as a murder. On the opposing side, some argued that Pretti resisted arrest and may have brandished a weapon.

Pretti served as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. He was fatally shot by federal agents near Nicollet Avenue and 26th Street in south Minneapolis.

Videos that emerged online showed Alex Pretti holding his phone out likely filming or protesting a federal immigration operation, when agents confronted him, wrestled him to the ground and fired multiple shots.

Understanding Stephen King’s stance on ICE enforcement amidst Alex Pretti killing

Stephen King has strongly criticized and opposed the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, particularly in the context of recent crackdowns, including the Alex Pretti incident.

On January 23, the horror novelist posted a tweet condemning the ICE enforcement and tweeted:

King's tweet marked a direct comparison to Nazi Germany’s secret police, known for their authoritarian enforcement and terror tactics. This was not the first time King has made a statement against the Trump administration. He has been a consistent and vocal critic of Trump and his policies. In an interview with The Guardian, he responded to a question about inventing an ending for "Trumpian America." He said:

“I think it would be impeachment – which, in my view, would be a good ending. I would love to see him retired, let’s put it that way. The bad ending would be that he gets a third term and takes things over completely. It’s a horror story either way. Trump is a horror story, isn’t he?”

Zach Lambert, the progressive pastor and author has made similar critical statements against ICE while condemning the killing of Pretti and tweeted:

“Alex Pretti spent his life caring for others as a VA nurse and today he gave his life protecting a fellow protestor who was being violently assaulted by ICE. He lived helping people in need and died helping people in need. I hope my two sons grow up to be men who stand in the gap for folks just like Alex.”

DHS has defended the killing of Alex Pretti with spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin sharing with CNN US that Border Patrol agents fired in self-defense after the ICU nurse approached them while being armed with a semi-automatic handgun. McLaughlin told the outlet:

“The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots.”

Pretti’s parents, Michael and Susan Pretti condemned the federal agents' actions and disputed the DHS account that portrayed their son as armed and threatening. Pretti’s parents have defended their son’s killing by the federal agents.

They described him as a "kindhearted soul" and an ICU nurse who deeply cared for others. They said that he was seeking to protect a woman from the agents. They said in a statement:

"The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting."

The fatal shooting of Pretti has sparked widespread demonstrations and protests in Minneapolis. This incident is the second fatal federal agent shooting in the city within weeks following Renee Good's death.
