Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was released after he spent approximately 11 hours in police custody. This occurred on February 19, which was also the 66-year-old former senior royal's birthday. The former senior royal was spotted leaving the custody of the police in the back of a vehicle. This followed confirmation by the police that a man in his sixties from Norfolk had been released under investigation.

This is the latest in a series of significant events surrounding the scrutiny of the past associations and actions of the former senior royal. The police have confirmed that searches were conducted in Norfolk. Other searches were still underway in Berkshire.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested due to the suspicion of misconduct in public office. This was according to the Thames Valley Police. The police were spotted earlier in the morning at Wood Farm. This farm is located within the Sandringham estate. This is where Andrew has been residing since he left Royal Lodge.

This is based on a complaint filed to the police allegedly by the anti-monarchy group Republic. This is based on the sharing of information obtained from Andrew Mountbatten's former role as the UK trade envoy. This information was shared in correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein. Jeffrey Epstein is deceased. He was awaiting trial when he was sent to prison in 2019.

Earlier releases of files in the United States have again brought the past associations of Andrew to the fore. Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in the Epstein case. Andrew stepped back from his duties in 2019 after a highly criticized TV interview with the BBC.

In 2022, his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, took away Andrew's military roles and royal patronages. Also in 2022, Andrew settled with Giuffre. Giuffre had filed a lawsuit against Andrew. Andrew denied the charges leveled by Giuffre. Giuffre passed away in 2025. King Charles III stated the case would have to go through the legal system. King Charles III also stated full cooperation with the legal authorities. Legal experts have stated the case could take some time to come to a conclusion. Dr. Tom Frost of Loughborough University stated the decision to charge Andrew Mountbatten would depend upon the Crown Prosecution Service.
