Netflix has just released the second trailer for Animals, the upcoming movie starring Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington. And from what we see in the trailer, it looks like this family's real problem started long before the phone call.

The movie revolves around Mark Kimball, played by Ben Affleck, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate, and his wife, Abigail, played by Kerry Washington. The couple seems to have built a life together with Mark focusing on his political career. However, their life doesn't go as planned after Mark receives a phone call. Their son's kidnapping leaves them with no choice but to deal with a situation they never saw coming.

The new trailer released on Netflix's social media on October 5 opens with a familiar thriller setting as seen in the previous trailer. Viewers come across a successful couple who receives a phone call that eventually leads them into raising a ransom and making difficult choices.

But towards the end of the trailer, it becomes clear that kidnapping is only a trigger. The real problems in this family seem to have started much earlier than that.

What does the Animals trailer reveal?

The one-minute-and-thirteen-second trailer of Animals starts by showing Mark and Abigail giggling as they spend time with each other, with another clip showing the responsibilities he holds as a mayor. We also see a clip showing Mark with his son, where he hugs him. But another scene soon creates a sense of urgency after they receive a call, making everything more tense and raising questions about what will happen next.

We don't hear what Mark says during the call, but his expression in the Animals trailer clearly shows that he is angry and worried at the same time. What exactly happened during the call is something we'll only find out once the movie is released. In another clip, we hear him in the background saying:

"A very wise person once told me that in a crisis we discover who we are and what's important to us."

In another scene, we also see Gillian Anderson's character telling him that whatever secrets they're hiding need to be out to save their kid's life. The line feels less like a reaction to the crisis and more like something was already wrong between them. We also get to see Mark questioning and asking if anything he knew was actually a lie.

Towards the end of the Animals trailer, the husband and wife are seen fighting with each other, as she blames him for making their family a target, while he claims that their son being kidnapped wasn't his fault.

This just shows the contrast from the first scene to the last, where on the surface they look like a power couple with everything under control; their image shatters in an instant after the phone call as they accuse each other. They are forced to confront secrets. The two were never completely open to each other and the Animals trailer makes a point of underlining those secrets.

The anger feels like it has been there for a while, as if these arguments have been building up between them. Their political world only adds to the feeling that the trouble did not start with the calls.

On the other hand, Gillian Anderson also shows up as someone who seems to know how this whole world works, which makes her role even more interesting. Overall, bringing their son Denny home is not their only problem. They also have to arrange the ransom money, while the trouble in their personal lives starts raising questions about the image they show in public.

Speaking about the Animals, Ben Affleck explained in a statement reported by Tudum that the story also makes him question who people really are when they can no longer hide behind the masks they show others. According to him, the movie is also about whether people follow their morals or choose to do what is best for themselves.

Affleck also spoke about how the movie looks at marriage and what it means to build your life around another person by saying:

"The movie is really about marriage — what it means to attach yourself to someone, the bargains and exchanges."

Animals is scheduled to release on October 9 on Netflix.
