“Any Republicans care to comment”: Barbra Streisand questions Trump’s intention in cosying up to “brutal dictator” in North Korea

Barbra Streisand has questioned President Donald Trump’s personal rapport with North Korea’s Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un.

Streisand posted on Threads:

“Donald Trump turns his back on our ally South Korea because the brutal dictator of North Korea is nice to him. Any Republicans care to comment?”

Streisand has been a critic of Trump for many years through interviews, social media and her music. In 2015, she called the idea of a Trump presidency "terrifyingly scary" before he won the election.

Her statement comes after Trump ordered the curtailment of U.S.-South Korea military exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield. The 11-day event will now end on August 21 rather than August 27. He made the decision not to “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to North Korea, a move which caught Seoul off guard.

Barbra Streisand's criticism for Donald Trump

Barbra Streisand recently called out President Donald Trump for scaling back its military exercises with South Korea. Explaining the reason behind it, Trump said that South Korea declined to help with the war against Iran and cited good relationship with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

He wrote in his Truth Social post that based on his “good relationship” with Kim Jong Un, he is not happy that the US has long ago agreed to participate in joint military exercises with South Korea. He said that these exercises are:

“not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a Country that, as long as Donald J. Trump has been President, has been unthreatening and respectful.”

In her Threads post, Barbra Streisand asked Republicans if they “care to comment” on the situation as she slammed Trump for turning its back on its ally South Korea. Many users responded with criticism of Trump, calling him a “traitor” and “communist.” Others supported Trump’s stance and asked Streisand to provide sources to validate her statement rather than sharing her “ignorant” opinion.

The multiple-Grammy winner’s criticism of Trump began in 2015 when she called a potential Trump presidency “terrifyingly scary” while discussing the political landscape and supporting Hilary Clinton.

In August 2015, Streisand repeatedly slammed Trump during her concert tour opener, Barbra: The Music…The Mem’ries…The Magic!, at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. In the midst of the concert, while sharing the stage with mind reader Lior Suchard for some comedy, Streisand quipped:

“The only person’s mind he can’t read is Donald Trump’s because he doesn’t have one.”

She changed lyrics of her songs to mock Trump and displayed a parody of him on stage. According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, during her Madison Square Garden concert in 2019, Barbra Streisand performed a satirical parody of Stephen Sondheim's Send in the Clowns to mock Trump.

She changed the lyrics to poke fun at Trump’s business record, tax returns, and campaign promises with lines like:

“He says he’s rich/ Maybe he’s not/Until he releases his returns, who can be sure?/ Who is this clown? Something’s amiss, I don’t approve/ Now that he runs the free world, where can we move?”

The majority of the crowd responded with a standing ovation, and a few expressed disapproval as Trump’s picture wearing clown makeup appeared on the video screen behind The Way We Were singer.

Additionally, Barbra Streisand published an open letter in January 2017, calling Trump a “dangerous harbinger for American democracy.” Her comment came on his pattern of siding with figures like Vladimir Putin and Julian Assange while dismissing expert intelligence officials.
