Armie Hammer had stayed away from Hollywood for approximately five years after he faced allegations of sexual assault and cannibalism. While the charges against him were dropped in 2023 due to insufficient evidence, Armie Hammer's career was already ruined.

The actor spent time away from acting, focused on his family, and has now returned through his comeback film, Citizen Vigilante. However, reports suggest that Armie Hammer has criticized his own comeback film.

Citizen Vigilante might not look like the film Armie Hammer believed he had signed up for

Directed by Uwe Boll, Citizen Vigilante was initially legally rejected for public release in Germany because the regulatory board was of the opinion that the film promoted vigilantism. The film follows Michael Sanders (played by Armie Hammer), an American vigilante who takes it upon himself to punish criminals in Europe and the corrupt authorities that protect them.

While initially the plot of the film sounds unproblematic, many viewers who first saw the film did not like it because most of the criminals Michael goes after in the film are migrants. Many were thus of the opinion that the film has an anti-migrant tone and message. Citizen Vigilante struggled to become a hit in its initial days of release in North America, but after Elon Musk praised the film and made it available to watch on X for 48 Hours, many liked it.

The film has now become one of the most purchased projects on Prime Video and Apple TV. Thus, while a certain section of the audience did not like the film, many have. Surprisingly, Armie Hammer, who stars as the film's lead, is one of the people who have criticized the film. As Puck News reports, a source close to Hammer has revealed that the actor is not at all happy with the film's final cut. Hammer has reportedly talked about the film's final cut, saying,

"This is hateful and disgusting"

It appears that Hammer was given the idea that the film would look a certain way but in reality has turned out to be different. However, Hammer hasn't publicly come out and officially shared such views about the film; hence, we can't guess exactly what could have gone wrong. Director Uwe Boll is, however, strong in his stance about the film. Speaking to Newsweek, Boll said,

“The movie shows an inconvenient truth what all other movies out there don’t want to show or try to sugarcoat in their productions,”

While after reviewing Citizen Vigilante for the third time, the German regulatory board recently passed it with an 18+ rating, and so did the British Board of Film Classification, the film hasn't impressed critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Citizen Vigilante has a 6% score on the Tomatometer. But it surprisingly has scored 93% on the Popcornmeter. Quiver Distribution has picked up the film for global distribution.

It is yet to be seen how the Armie Hammer vigilante film will do when it comes to total box office revenue. Hammer's career, however, might not be completely over. He has starred in Night Driver and Mascotland, both of which are in post-production, which might just save his career.
