The SI rebranding announcement was made in Trump's UN General Assembly address on September 22, 2026, which preceded Chinese President Xi Jinping's Washington state visit. People who are close to Trump quickly began using the term SI. However, experts told the BBC that the term is unlikely to spread widely in the industry because it is usually associated with more advanced systems.
Trump's announcement marked another rebranding effort after he changed the names of Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico on US maps and in federal communications. "It's a much more accurate name, because when you say the other, it means it's fake. Artificial means it's fake, and it's not fake, it's just very strong intelligence. So, I think a lot of people are doing that now. I call it SI."
Trump further explained that during the discussion on SI with President Xi Jinping, the idea of renaming it to SI was strongly supported by him because the term is more precise.
