Avengers: Doomsday - The only overview you need shortly before the much awaited MCU film

Avengers: Doomsday is the upcoming superhero film directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. They have also co-produced the film with Kevin Feige. It's written by Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron. The film is a sequel to Endgame and is the 39th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be released theatrically on December 18, 2026. The film will be a part of Phase Six. The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, and X-Men all fight against Doctor Doom.

An overview of Avengers: Doomsday

1) Kang the Conqueror - Avengers: Doomsday was earlier supposed to be called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The film would star Jonathan Majors as the villainous Kang. However, his legal cases forced Marvel to rework the script.

2) Robert Downey Jr. - Robert Downey Jr. is playing the main antagonist, Doctor Doom. His casting was introduced at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. RDJ was Tony Stark/Iron Man in the previous phase of the MCU. The character is killed in Endgame while trying to stop Thanos.

3) Ensemble cast - Several actors are returning to play their respective superhero roles in the film. This includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Tom Holland, and Pedro Pascal. The list of actors is huge and has managed to draw attention from viewers.

4) Teasers - The makers have recently dropped several teaser videos of Avengers: Doomsday. All of them focus on a specific set of characters. One of them revealed Chris Evans' return as Steve Rogers. Another one focused on the X-Men returning in the film.

5) Thor's personal issues - One treasure features Chris Hemsworth as Thor. It showcases him praying to his father to protect his adopted son. The Asgardian then asks for strength for him to fight one more time. The film will reveal how his subplot connects with the overall story.

6) X-Men's merger - The film will also showcase several X-Men superheroes coming together to fight Doctor Doom. This includes Professor X, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Mystique, and Cyclops. We will see their plot merging with other teams in the film. It's one of the rare instances of all these worlds coming up together in a mainstream Hollywood film.

7) World of Wakanda - One of the teasers also provides a glimpse into the characters from Wakanda. Shuri, played by Letitia Wright, wore the Black Panther suit in Wakanda Forever. The character will be joining other forces, including The Fantastic Four, for a larger cause.

The film also marks the return of the Russo brothers to the director's chair. They last directed the 2019 flick Avengers: Endgame. While the film was a major success, it was followed by a major slump in quality for the MCU.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, 2026. Its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will drop on December 17, 2027.
