Avengers Endgame: Encore will further reveal how time will mess back in Doomsday

Avengers Endgame: Encore will remind us how one cannot mess with time and get away with it. Despite their good intentions, the Avengers altered the past when they traveled back in time to bring the Infinity Stones to the present timeline.

As the Avengers Endgame: Encore trailer teases, the Avengers will have to face the consequences of messing with time in Doomsday.

Avengers Endgame: Encore trailer hints at time coming back for the Avengers in Doomsday

Avengers Endgame: Encore is going to release in theaters approximately three months before Avengers: Doomsday, on September 25, 2026. As we had earlier reported, the film will have bonus scenes and will connect Endgame's story to that of Doomsday. It has also been speculated that the film will have seven extra minutes of footage, which would further explain how Endgame is connected to Doomsday.

The Avengers Endgame: Encore trailer doesn't show us any new scenes, but it does feature an important line from the 2019 film (which we'll see in the upcoming version too). We hear Tony Stark's voice from the 2019 film in the trailer, as he says,

"If you mess with time, it tends to mess back."

In retrospect, it appears that this very truth might explain how or why Doctor Doom will be targeting the Avengers.

In Avengers: Endgame (2019), the Avengers used the Quantum Realm as a highway to travel to different points in the past to borrow the Infinity Stones to undo what Thanos had done. They had thus altered what was already supposed to happen. Thanos believed that unchecked overpopulation would drain every universe of its limited resources and lead to complete extinction, just as it had for his home planet Titan.

Irrespective of how much pain and suffering Thanos' snap had caused those left alive to remember it; it was what was supposed to happen. By going back in time and borrowing infinity stones, the Avengers thus messed with time and its rules. They went back to 2012 (New York), 2013 (Asgard), 2014 (Morag and Vormir), and 1970 (Camp Lehigh) to collect the infinity stones and then used them to undo Thanos' snap and kill him. That undoing killed Thanos and his army while the gamma radiation from the stones killed Tony Stark/Iron Man.

In the Doomsday Special Look trailer, Victor von Doom tells the Avengers,

"All of you have lived stolen lives. But now you must give them back."

Victor isn't completely wrong. Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Dr. Strange, Spider-Man, T'Challa, Scarlet Witch, among others, came back to life due to Bruce Banner's snap in Avengers: Endgame. The film had also revealed that removing a stone or changing an event splits reality, creating a new and alternate timeline for that specific past. While Captain America traveled back at the end of the film to return every stone to its exact second of removal to close those split branches, there were some mistakes made.

In the 2012 timeline, Loki escaped with the Space Stone, creating a new alternate reality. In the 2014 timeline, the past version of Nebula synced with her future self, allowing 2014 Thanos and his entire army to travel forward to 2023 and fight the final battle (where he was ultimately killed). After returning the stones, Steve Rogers chose to stay in the past to live a full life with Peggy Carter, returning to the main timeline as an old man.

These are all the mistakes we know of. Avengers Endgame: Encore will most likely show us exactly how the Avengers further messed with time, not expecting its consequences. Thus, whatever the Encore version reveals will help explain why Doom believes that the Avengers must give back their stolen lives.

Avengers Endgame: Encore and Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theaters on September 25, 2026, and December 18, 2026, respectively.
